Admit it, he was just carried by his voice actor. Sarevok more interesting, even without ToB content. Sure, Irenicus has a lot of shit you can speculate about but that is just fans creating the story for the devs.

he was a bitter simp, his plan was moronic and he kept making enemies left and right and in the end he underestimated some prophesized god child just to steal his soul despite the prophesy saying that they would drown the realm in blood with their coming
if only he wasn't such a huge simp and bitter he could have lived out the rest of his life doing cool mage shit but instead he decided to go full vengeance and frick with everyone who he met
even sarevok had a better plan and was more compelling because bhaal cult frickery messed his head and his foster father only taught him greed

well the vampires and golems were actually a smart alliance seeing as his "sister" was the one running them and golems were 100% loyal if not a tad bit dumb, as for the plan to ally/use drows that was just plain old silly

I think the plot was changed late in development, and originally she was just his lover.
