How long it takes to pop a queue. 24 mans in XIV are currently taking 18 minutes as DPS in EU. Which was pretty much instant about 6 months ago.
There's still a lot of people in Limsa though, so numbers I'd say are stable. A good amount of people, using it as their chat room.

well it's which numbers you're looking at and for what purpose that determines how good they are as metrics. the ratio of viewers to streamers is also an important metric. all the numbers matter in some way. for example, genshin impact is moderately popular with fairly consistent viewership, but it has no dominant channels, its viewership is well distributed across many streamers, most of whom are not solely genshin streamers, which reflects its organic popularity across a large swath of people. it's just unfortunate that the default sort order for twitch is concurrent viewers

Alot of people are interested in the state of WoW as they'd rather watch a frickup then play it, but its more reflective of the size of other communities too. Why do you think OSRS has consistently had 2-3x the amount of viewers than FF14 despite being a browser point and click game? Last time I played, all the cities and hubs would be borderline barren wastelands, queue times could range in the 30 mins to an hour sometimes, the entire game world is dead, none of the players actually talk or communicate outside of being toxic and kicking people and linking DPS meters in levelling dungeons, trade / general chat is a shadow of what it used to be, all the LFG tabs are just full of advertisement bots and boosting groups, bot farms plague almost every map you go on, the auction houses are dead and full of the same 10 people manipulating it, and the list honestly just keeps going.
It is clear to anyone who isn't delusional that the game is dead as frick. But Blizzard have a good marketing budget, and that's all that matters for these brainlets.
Its honestly just sad at this point. Just let the game die out with atleast a fraction of glory, instead of this slow and pathetic public withering.

Picked this back up after a 5 year break and have been having a lot of fun with it.
I got a few friends to join in now that its on Steam and it is nice having an MMO where the leveling experience is actually fun and you can play together. With most other MMOs it seems like you are supposed to play solo for 75% of the game and only do raids/dungeons together.

that webm right there is a good example. some jobs get limit breaks that instantly kill half the team in the right situation, others get something that barely buffs their damage (black mage), or does alot of potential damage but is very easy to avoid (dragoon)
Black mage was stupidly broken for a while in crystal conflict and DRG is the best melee only tied with NIN with how fricking strong its LB is to just team wipe.
The pvp is fine its a much better state than wow you can hop in and have fun immediately versus wow where you need to be a no life mae buck with ilvl 5000 with all your borrowed power bullshit and legendarys to even begin messing around in even the casual modes.

I got an FFXIV account to 90 in all jobs and cleared multiple raid tiers only to realize I wasn't actually having fun with the game. There's no fricking content outside of raiding (which isn't fun if you know the fight, and getting a group of people who don't know the fight without having to teach the same goddamn lessons over and over is impossible) and a few scripted story quests with completely unengaging mechanics every three months or so - they're alright, yes, but you can get the same shit anywhere.
I've started playing OSRS recently which is better, IMO - lot more breadth in the gameplay experience. I wish socializing was actually important to the core gameplay rather than everybody just ironmanning/using the GE and soloing all content until endgame, but at least in OSRS you can start a discussion based on the different ways in which you've built your accounts. In FFXIV? The only real variables are "what's your favorite job" and "how far are you in the MSQ", so it really may as well just be singleplayer - and singleplayer in the sense of a cinematic Sony game, not Runescape, which is more singleplayer in the sense of a metroidvania that admittedly has Cookie Clicker elements.

Yoshi P said it himself, you don't want to keep playing, then just stop and come back later if you want. Disregarding Ganker, I started playing FF XIV and I'm taking my time and enjoying myself. I like the story, the dumb activities and just hanging around in the FC house, playing hide and seek and stuff. Will the time come when I'll get bored and stop playing? Absolutely. But by then I'll just quit and wait until it picks my interest again. It's not like there's some time gated arbitrary system keeping me chained to my character.
My point is, going at any game, nay activity, with the WoW mentality and expecting not to get burned out is moronic. The game may be designed to "come back later" when it comes to the story, but literally every single bit of content from the Island Sanctuary to Savage raiding punishes you for missing even a single week. I'm currently grinding for BiS on SCH for the next Ultimate coming up, and we're legitimately concerned I might not have my weapon/chest in the next 10 weeks because my RNG for rolls has been notoriously garbage. Think about that for even a second; I'm concerned that I might not have enough time with 10 FRICKING WEEKS ahead of me to just get TWO pieces of gear. That's fricking insane, and something I'd expect from an MMO 10 years ago when CBT was the norm. The fact that this archaic loot system is still in the game is an outright insult to the playerbase.
It doesn't matter what we're comparing it to. The person I replied to said it was "designed" to let you come and go as you please, and it blatantly isn't in almost every aspect of the game. Hell, even it's weekly tomestone caps are oppressive, since you need two weeks to get a chest/pant piece, meaning even a single week missed is another tacked on for that *single* piece of BiS gear. It doesn't matter if it's better than WoW's; it's still utterly garbage for anyone familiar with it.

I've been trying to max jobs and a lot feel the same in how they play. But I don't really know how you could even make them feel different without breaking them.

It's the opposite of MoP in terms of class design. There's too few abilities. Depending on your class it might be good or bad, good for shamans since they don't need 3 separate keyboards like in MoP.
They are still holding some stuff back artificially like the set reforge being timegated for 6 weeks, not everything being account-wide, etc.
I do main enh, and have been in MoP too (I'm never forgiving them for changing Stormblast animation), so yeah.
Depending on the build you can run out of stuff to press pretty easily. Even with hekili playing the game for you you'll have periods of time when it will not suggest anything.

Been playing for years, over 6k hours in FFXIV. Have been saving raiding since late Stormblood, and cleared my first ultimate, DSR, on-content back in July. The game is going downhill, fast.
The EW story was borderline incomprehensible with how many plotholes, dropped ideas, and awful filler stories there were. Don't even get me started about how despite the expansion being apparently the culmination of all before it, the end villain ends up being brand new to the expac, the dynamis concept is again, brand new to the expac (and directly fricks up the last expansion's post-game story,) and the only characters that are *ever* in any danger at all, are nameless or one-time NPCs. It's become a dating sim with how fricking invincible the main cast is and how often they try to play up the memes. Don't even get me started about Elpis and how fricking fan-service-y that was.
I'm not going to speak to how WoW is fairing, because I'm not playing it. But what I *can* say is that this Savage tier was so bad, that most of the high-end players I know have basically dropped the game outside of 2-hour reclears on Tuesdays for WoW, to get something fresh.
Hell, the last major patch introduced a SINGLE dungeon with some extra boss lines you can go through if you want lore, and an extremely short story where you get a weapon at the end. The devs are dropping the ball like a fricking free weight.
And based on the fact that they're talking about "reworking" PLD, DRG, and AST in a similar vein to how they "reworked" SMN (they absolutely butchered a fun job and turned it into a particle effect spectacle so simple to play that someone made a one-button macro,) alongside the massive balance issues early on this tier, I'm not confident that the devs have any idea what they're doing at this point.

Nah I'm with him. I've been playing since Shadowbringers and done most of the engaging content in the game. I attempted raiding first tier of EW and it felt as unfulfilling as wow raiding so I gave up before clearing Phase 2 of P4S.
I think the game doesn't add enough content for casual players and the devs spend way too much time on making the raids and ultimates.
They were able to get away with the whole "sorry for no content" during covid but if this continues into next expansion I'm expecting a huge dropoff.
Oh don't get me wrong I think XIV has more "timeless" content. Eureka, Bozja, Triple Triad, leveling classes through the first time, island sanctuary before it became a spreadsheet simulator, and extreme and hildebrand storylines are all great the first time. But once you complete them there's no replayability to them.
Wow has at least SOME replayability (low level M+ is very casual) and sometimes I just want to nuke some mobs and grind out a mount or meaningless rewards (I enjoyed Zereth mortis up until about 1/4 into revered)
I think the XIV Devs are banking too much on the sheer amount of earlier content that players still have to clear through. But just like me, eventually most of those players will complete it, there will be ZERO content for them in game and they'll drop the game like I have (until the next expac) and I'd just like if the devs actually provided some meaningful and replayable content.

I have played maybe 100 hours of Wow in the last year.
I have played at LEAST 1000 of XIV in the last year.
Xiv is the better game. Nobody is debating that. But you can't deny that the whole "worthwhile" content they've added to EW is the raids and DSR. The criterion dungeon system and upcoming deep dungeon are a step in the right direction and if they continue supporting it I'll be happy but I shouldn't have had to wait a year for content that should have been in the game at launch.

Not that anon but i've always stood by the idea that the longer xiv goes on the better it is for newer players, the sheer amount of content you can run through for the first time just grows and grows and the game is great for that.
when you're 3000+ hours deep however, and you've expirienced everything you want to expirience there isnt just that repetative value to keep you going, and i dont think retention systems are an inherently bad thing, i just think theres def a balance between what xiv does and what wow does.

I wish I was kidding. Our #1 PLD in the World for DSR clears was just talking yesterday about getting through his characters "Trillers" or something on WoW. Spent the last week or so using some exploit with NPCs killing things around him to get all his classes to 50 prior to Dragonflight.
All of them but myself are currently playing WoW more often than FFXIV now, with the exception of our BLM who is reprogging the tier as AST so he can fill for reclears if we need a regen.
This seems to be the sentiment even on the official xiv forums. Tell me, why does Ganker astroturf this game so hard when there are clear glaring problems as you've outlined?

XIV got superseded for me. I appreciate the way XIV does raids, but I much prefer the WoW combat and style of bossfight.

WoW breaks my immersion with its real life social problems put into the game. GW2 fell just like WoW too. Western games turned into Netflix adaptations with lame writers incorporating real life problems into art.
As someone who's spent many years on each one, they're both fricking garbage. It's incredibly depressing to see the mmo genre reduced to these two pieces of shit that barely even qualify as mmos. FFXIV is especially bad in this area; it's basically a single player jrpg at this point. A ton of people call HW one of the greatest Final Fantasy games of all time. That’s largely based on the story. So I recommend that you set auto-advance on, then just play another game on another monitor like you’re watching an anime. It’s basically like one anyway, there’s not much gameplay. And all of the gameplay you do have is solo. ARR has a lot of dungeons and NPCs that you have to walk around and interact with, while HW is much more in the movie territory, which is great for FFXIV fans because we all love a good movie game, don’t we?
I played simultaneously for years, but dropped XIV when SB came out, then dropped WoW when after clearing Argus during Legion.
Even now I only resub to XIV to do the story and some extremes/savages here and there. Once I get my clears I unsub for another year or so. The overworld in XIV sucks ass and I want to hang myself for playing a healer in this game because its so fricking brainded. Even tanking is too boring with its 1-2-3 on every fricking job.
I just wish WoW had better lore and a frick ton of overworld content. That's all it would take to bring me back.

Going by player numbers alone, WoW is still 3x bigger than FFXIV. There's really no debate there. The numbers are readily available. That doesn't necessarily make it better, but it's obvious what more people are playing. WoW is also hemorrhaging players as FFXIV continues to grow, though. There is no real metric to base anything on. It's all personal preference.
Cope all you want, Dragonflight practically has nothing going for it.
New Race looks like shit and has more gear issues than mechagnomes. New Class only has two specs again and couldn't be bothered to also let it Tank. The two are forced together. Flying on Dragons is something people already have had since the Burning Crusade. Talent Trees has to take away even more abilities from classes just so they can give them right back to you. You won't even get all the new content as they're going to rotate dungeons with old ones.

How long it takes to pop a queue. 24 mans in XIV are currently taking 18 minutes as DPS in EU. Which was pretty much instant about 6 months ago.
There's still a lot of people in Limsa though, so numbers I'd say are stable. A good amount of people, using it as their chat room.
WoW seems to be picking up in numbers, but that's to be expected given the next expansion is around the corner. Is removing content enough to save WoW? Maybe... It looks promising so far, but we'll see.

Last time I played, all the cities and hubs would be borderline barren wastelands, queue times could range in the 30 mins to an hour sometimes, the entire game world is dead, none of the players actually talk or communicate outside of being toxic and kicking people and linking DPS meters in levelling dungeons, trade / general chat is a shadow of what it used to be, all the LFG tabs are just full of advertisement bots and boosting groups, bot farms plague almost every map you go on, the auction houses are dead and full of the same 10 people manipulating it, and the list honestly just keeps going.
It is clear to anyone who isn't delusional that the game is dead as frick. But Blizzard have a good marketing budget, and that's all that matters for these brainlets.

Picked this back up after a 5 year break and have been having a lot of fun with it.
I got a few friends to join in now that its on Steam and it is nice having an MMO where the leveling experience is actually fun and you can play together. With most other MMOs it seems like you are supposed to play solo for 75% of the game and only do raids/dungeons together.
Twitch numbers only matter when you game has an update or drops running at the moment. When the numbers decline it suddenly becomes a "shit metric".

that webm right there is a good example. some jobs get limit breaks that instantly kill half the team in the right situation, others get something that barely buffs their damage (black mage), or does alot of potential damage but is very easy to avoid (dragoon)
Black mage was stupidly broken for a while in crystal conflict and DRG is the best melee only tied with NIN with how fricking strong its LB is to just team wipe.
Incredibly unbalanced job designs means some jobs just simply matter more. Movement still feels clunky and the server rate can frick you over.
The pvp is fine its a much better state than wow you can hop in and have fun immediately versus wow where you need to be a no life mae buck with ilvl 5000 with all your borrowed power bullshit and legendarys to even begin messing around in even the casual modes.

I got an FFXIV account to 90 in all jobs and cleared multiple raid tiers only to realize I wasn't actually having fun with the game. There's no fricking content outside of raiding (which isn't fun if you know the fight, and getting a group of people who don't know the fight without having to teach the same goddamn lessons over and over is impossible) and a few scripted story quests with completely unengaging mechanics every three months or so - they're alright, yes, but you can get the same shit anywhere.
I've started playing OSRS recently which is better, IMO - lot more breadth in the gameplay experience. I wish socializing was actually important to the core gameplay rather than everybody just ironmanning/using the GE and soloing all content until endgame, but at least in OSRS you can start a discussion based on the different ways in which you've built your accounts. In FFXIV? The only real variables are "what's your favorite job" and "how far are you in the MSQ", so it really may as well just be singleplayer - and singleplayer in the sense of a cinematic Sony game, not Runescape, which is more singleplayer in the sense of a metroidvania that admittedly has Cookie Clicker elements.

I'm currently grinding for BiS on SCH for the next Ultimate coming up, and we're legitimately concerned I might not have my weapon/chest in the next 10 weeks because my RNG for rolls has been notoriously garbage. Think about that for even a second; I'm concerned that I might not have enough time with 10 FRICKING WEEKS ahead of me to just get TWO pieces of gear. That's fricking insane, and something I'd expect from an MMO 10 years ago when CBT was the norm. The fact that this archaic loot system is still in the game is an outright insult to the playerbase.

Been playing for years, over 6k hours in FFXIV. Have been saving raiding since late Stormblood, and cleared my first ultimate, DSR, on-content back in July. The game is going downhill, fast.
The EW story was borderline incomprehensible with how many plotholes, dropped ideas, and awful filler stories there were. Don't even get me started about how despite the expansion being apparently the culmination of all before it, the end villain ends up being brand new to the expac, the dynamis concept is again, brand new to the expac (and directly fricks up the last expansion's post-game story,) and the only characters that are *ever* in any danger at all, are nameless or one-time NPCs. It's become a dating sim with how fricking invincible the main cast is and how often they try to play up the memes. Don't even get me started about Elpis and how fricking fan-service-y that was.
I'm not going to speak to how WoW is fairing, because I'm not playing it. But what I *can* say is that this Savage tier was so bad, that most of the high-end players I know have basically dropped the game outside of 2-hour reclears on Tuesdays for WoW, to get something fresh.
Hell, the last major patch introduced a SINGLE dungeon with some extra boss lines you can go through if you want lore, and an extremely short story where you get a weapon at the end. The devs are dropping the ball like a fricking free weight.
And based on the fact that they're talking about "reworking" PLD, DRG, and AST in a similar vein to how they "reworked" SMN (they absolutely butchered a fun job and turned it into a particle effect spectacle so simple to play that someone made a one-button macro,) alongside the massive balance issues early on this tier, I'm not confident that the devs have any idea what they're doing at this point.
You know it's bad when we were getting significantly better content in the middle of the COVID drawback. Like Jesus Christ, if you aren't some ERP goblin, the game is losing it's touch *fast.*

Nah I'm with him. I've been playing since Shadowbringers and done most of the engaging content in the game. I attempted raiding first tier of EW and it felt as unfulfilling as wow raiding so I gave up before clearing Phase 2 of P4S.
I think the game doesn't add enough content for casual players and the devs spend way too much time on making the raids and ultimates.
They were able to get away with the whole "sorry for no content" during covid but if this continues into next expansion I'm expecting a huge dropoff.

Eureka, Bozja, Triple Triad, leveling classes through the first time, island sanctuary before it became a spreadsheet simulator, and extreme and hildebrand storylines are all great the first time. But once you complete them there's no replayability to them.
Wow has at least SOME replayability (low level M+ is very casual) and sometimes I just want to nuke some mobs and grind out a mount or meaningless rewards (I enjoyed Zereth mortis up until about 1/4 into revered)
I think the XIV Devs are banking too much on the sheer amount of earlier content that players still have to clear through. But just like me, eventually most of those players will complete it, there will be ZERO content for them in game and they'll drop the game like I have (until the next expac) and I'd just like if the devs actually provided some meaningful and replayable content.

I have played maybe 100 hours of Wow in the last year.
I have played at LEAST 1000 of XIV in the last year.
Xiv is the better game. Nobody is debating that. But you can't deny that the whole "worthwhile" content they've added to EW is the raids and DSR. The criterion dungeon system and upcoming deep dungeon are a step in the right direction and if they continue supporting it I'll be happy but I shouldn't have had to wait a year for content that should have been in the game at launch.
Not that anon but i've always stood by the idea that the longer xiv goes on the better it is for newer players, the sheer amount of content you can run through for the first time just grows and grows and the game is great for that.
when you're 3000+ hours deep however, and you've expirienced everything you want to expirience there isnt just that repetative value to keep you going, and i dont think retention systems are an inherently bad thing, i just think theres def a balance between what xiv does and what wow does.

I wish I was kidding. Our #1 PLD in the World for DSR clears was just talking yesterday about getting through his characters "Trillers" or something on WoW. Spent the last week or so using some exploit with NPCs killing things around him to get all his classes to 50 prior to Dragonflight.
All of them but myself are currently playing WoW more often than FFXIV now, with the exception of our BLM who is reprogging the tier as AST so he can fill for reclears if we need a regen.
This seems to be the sentiment even on the official xiv forums. Tell me, why does Ganker astroturf this game so hard when there are clear glaring problems as you've outlined?

As someone who's spent many years on each one, they're both fricking garbage. It's incredibly depressing to see the mmo genre reduced to these two pieces of shit that barely even qualify as mmos. FFXIV is especially bad in this area; it's basically a single player jrpg at this point. It has absolutely none of the things that once defined mmos and wow is hard at work putting the last few nails in its own coffin by heading in that same direction.

A ton of people call HW one of the greatest Final Fantasy games of all time. That’s largely based on the story. So I recommend that you set auto-advance on, then just play another game on another monitor like you’re watching an anime. It’s basically like one anyway, there’s not much gameplay. And all of the gameplay you do have is solo. ARR has a lot of dungeons and NPCs that you have to walk around and interact with, while HW is much more in the movie territory, which is great for FFXIV fans because we all love a good movie game, don’t we?

I played simultaneously for years, but dropped XIV when SB came out, then dropped WoW when after clearing Argus during Legion.
Even now I only resub to XIV to do the story and some extremes/savages here and there. Once I get my clears I unsub for another year or so. The overworld in XIV sucks ass and I want to hang myself for playing a healer in this game because its so fricking brainded. Even tanking is too boring with its 1-2-3 on every fricking job.
I just wish WoW had better lore and a frick ton of overworld content. That's all it would take to bring me back.

Going by player numbers alone, WoW is still 3x bigger than FFXIV. There's really no debate there. The numbers are readily available. That doesn't necessarily make it better, but it's obvious what more people are playing. WoW is also hemorrhaging players as FFXIV continues to grow, though. There is no real metric to base anything on. It's all personal preference.

New Race looks like shit and has more gear issues than mechagnomes. New Class only has two specs again and couldn't be bothered to also let it Tank. The two are forced together. Flying on Dragons is something people already have had since the Burning Crusade. Talent Trees has to take away even more abilities from classes just so they can give them right back to you. You won't even get all the new content as they're going to rotate dungeons with old ones.
And that's not even all the issues.
