      Kojima
      >can't write for shit
      >plots are nonsensical and moronic
      >occasionally experimental
      >almost always incompetent
      >views themselves as an auteur
      >bloated product in the worst ways possible
There's only two real difference are their fanbases. Breen fans know he's shit and embrace it. Kojimbo fans legit think he's hot shit.

      No one.

David Cage and Hideo Kojima are talentless and their games are boring. But more relevantly, their both generic in every possible way.

Neil Breen is talentless, but totally one of a kind.

Don't pool Kojima with David Cage, imbecile. You have no real argument.

Kojima even admits that there's no hidden meaning behind his games, You homosexuals read too much into them. That's on YOU. That just makes you tryhard pretentious homosexuals who have to make up for your inability to get laid by acting "deep" to make it seem like you have a personality.

Wrong job. For a vidya equivalent you'd need some delusional indie dev that just keeps making games. Someone like a Jason Welge but less of a scam artist.

      That's anime David Lynch.

Has to be SWERY since his grand ambitions/internal thought process are too lofty for his meager budgets, but makes do with it anyways.

The problem is SWERY makes unironically good games. Yes they're a little silly and the gameplay is often jank but at no point do they ever reach "so bad it's good" territory like Neil Breen movies or The Room, he writes genuinely good characters that make you care about them.

Do you guys ever wonder how the frick David Cage still has a job? Surely none of his games have been successful enough to justify the costs? He's rarely talked about in a positive light and his games have made very little cultural or design impact.

Vidya is not acessible and developed enough as a medium to have a Neil Breen, one guy with massive delusions of his own competence putting himself out there with whatever money he can scrounge and getting an ironic fanbase which see his work as comedy, and a slightly less ironic fanbase that consider him a misunderstood genius.
And I think there never will be, because there's no such thing as a game that's so bad it's good. Games are interactive; a bad game is usually just a chore to play, not an enjoyable experience of hilarious lack of skill.
If a guy who doesn't know how to make a game makes a game, it's usually just an unplayable piece of shit.

YIIK is actually a pretty good comparison to Breen

        [...]
I'm genuinely YIIKing out after reading this

The minimum amount of time and effort involved in making a video game vs making a movie are just too massive. A movie at the quality that Breen makes could reasonably be made in a week. Since breen is incompetent he probably takes several months but realistically the man-hours aren't that much between the writing, filming and the low-quality editing. He doesn't even use sets or props, just films at community college campuses and his house.

By contrast, even a crappy video game like YIIK would take over a year. Coding, debugging, making art, designing levels, etc all take much more time than just filming a scene and going with the first take.

Another thing is that the minimum amount of competence is also much different between film and games. Literally, all you need to be able to do to make a movie is be able to hit the record button on your camera. No matter how shitty you are, you will still end up with a video file that just works in the end, even if it's full of incomprehensible nonsense. With video games, if someone is truly incompetent, the .exe file will not run, crash, and be full of other bugs.

The end result of all this is that a talentless fool film maker will always be able to finish making a film if they stick to it, but a talentless fool game maker will likely never have a product that even functions at all.

In conclusion, I don't think someone ACTUALLY as bad as Niel Breen exists in vidya, because they would literally never produce a functioning game. YIIK is as close as we'll get.

          Anonymous

Every word you type just betrays your complete lack of awareness of the genre that you think
YIIK remotely represents the bottom of the barrel in terms of video game and kusoge culture as a whole. Please don't talk about things you clearly don't know anything about with this much confidence. Anonymous Agony isn't even that obscure and it makes YIIK look like Planescape: Torment.

            Anonymous

Someone could make a video game in one day for a game jam, sure. I myself have made small games for newgrounds before in an afternoon.
I don't think these are equivalent to Niel Breen either, because pushing out a game that quickly requires a high level of competence and skill. And besides, those are just hobby projects, not actual commercial products. They're more akin to someone making a short home movie than a Niel Breen production.

as someone who's trying to make a little simulation framework that's storytelling compatible and want to try chilla's episodic format, what would you improve? I've only seen vids but it seems like he focuses on one little game loop and then putting you in VN tier scenes where you don't really have much of a choice but to engage with whatever is happening the way they expect?

        Anonymous

Chilla, like breen always done things the exact same thing everytime.
        Its always:
        >Some creepy guy is being creepy for 30 minutes
        >Creepy guy creeps on you directly, run or hide
        >Repeat this loop 2 more times
        >Game ends
The writing is also very hamfisted and over the top, but without the impact to back it up, same as breen.

I will say that puppet combo games are actually much worse in terms of bugs and janks, but they're at least self aware. What makes Chilla like Breen is they aren't.

In order to answer this question, we need to figure out who Neil Breen is?
    >Indie director, rich/well-off from separate industry (real estate or architect for those wondering)
    >Lofty themes and concepts
    >His talent and budget can't match his ambitions, amateur
    >thinks he's a misunderstood genius
    >self-inserts
    >despite criticism, he continues making his passion projects
    >seems to have decent business relations with his crew that or NDAs

David Cage, for sure, he makes things that are supposed to be serious, unintentionally funny (Press X to Shaun), just like Breen, Kojima is the Jar Jar Abrams of gaming: style over substance and moronic callbacks to his own artistic preferences all the fricking time yet he is given MILLIONS to make flashy garbo like Death Stranding

Cage's games have too high of a production behind it to truly match Breen unfortunately, despite meeting every other criteria.
