KEEP THAT HEAD ON A FRICKIN SWIVEL OR YOUR ASS IS GOING BACK TO ORBIT IN 5 DIFFERENT BAGS" and my personal favorite "THAT FRICKIN THRESHER IS COMIN BACK! LIGHT THAT BASTARD UP BOYS" it's so overleveled there that I love it. Is it an unbalanced clusterfrick of some of the strongest enemies in the game? Yes. Is it fun? Yes (with friends)

Let's make a game where you character levels up but doesn't actually feel any stronger. Why bother to even include it then? All of the power scaling is related to gear and talent points now. Seems like it's only used as an arbitrary time wasting mechanic to extend playtime now.

        Anonymous

        >Why bother to even include it then?
Because number go up = dopamine hit for the 80 IQ morons that they're actually trying to entertain, because those are the people dumb enough to pay for microtransactions.

the main problem is just in leveling up, you start finding legendaries, you get a shitty build going, then you get no upgrades til level 60, so stuff starts feeling harder, but as you get into paragon etc then its easier, not counting nightmare dungeon etc (or world scaling, which duh increases difficulty)

Level scaling kills the fun of a game. What's the point of playing the game if you're never going to have fun with it, the game will keep you in this state of "just a little further" so you keep grinding and grinding and the reward of your efforts will never come. If they're fricking lazyfricks that don't want to balance the game, then just make us choose our own challenges. Chronicon for example does this, you're having an easy time? Increase the difficulty on your own volition and get better rewards.

      Anonymous

imo most types of level scaling is what designers do when they have no clear vision of mechanics or game play. It's why I tend to be wary of games with it aggressively because it's much like what you described: a never ending "almost there"

That's why open world RPGs are moronic. You can control a difficulty curve if your game is linear. If you're going to make an open world game, make it without levels. It's all an illusion if you need scaling in your game anyway. Progression should come from depth in the mechanics, not numbers on a stat screen.

        Anonymous

Elden Ring seemed to do fine with leveling in an open world. Devs just overvalue their work, so allowing a player to breeze through any content is like admitting defeat to them. They'd rather you sit there and play a padded mess because it's acceptable game design now.

Not scaling and scaling are both legitimate design choices in ARPGs. They result in different games and both have their advantages and disadvantages. Besides, it's not like enemies in D4 scale absolutely. The enemies do get more difficult. And who cares about losing zones with weaker enemies? Those become useless very quickly.

In other genres, it's different. Like, the scaling in Oblivion was an abysmal choice.

Level scaling is lazy and absolute dogshit but Bungie of all devs shouldn't be throwing stones. If there is one developer that is even lazier, scummier and more israelitey than Blizzard it's Bungie.

without scaling the whole world map would be wasted, everyone would go to the one area with the most XP to farm.

scaling makes the early areas just as viable as the later areas for XP gain and items.

there will always be a certain number of people doing that, i don't I'd rather just wander the world and see what happens, the helltide contains lots of rare mats, i like doing them.

scaling can make you feel powerful if you can melt monsters a few levels higher than you, are people really complaining they can't melt lvl 25 skeletons at lvl 50.

Okay that's 1 advantage in the pros category.

Now what other reasons are there to do level scaling? Especially aggressive level scaling
      - Removes the need to craft the game world and balance it around a user experience
      - Turns loot/gear into the real leveling. Which can be monetized
      - While gear is the real level, numbers can still go up in "leveling" while the game remains automated and stagnant mostly. Stimulating BIGGER NUMBER dopamine bursts in users. Making things "fun," sort of, to a certain extent, but more importantly addictive.
      - The fact the world is an open procedurally generated treadmill that doesn't go anywhere means it can be bigger. Which taps into the open world meme that's big in game design right now.

None of these are good things really, imo. You have one honest positive reason to do level scaling and a whole lot of perverse incentives.

Scaling is fine as long as you aren't doing Bethesda tier lazy scaling.
