Snake is top-tier in a universe where there's massive mechs shooting literal missiles at you, where armies of ninjas come at you, where you can casually fight a fighter jet or literal moo'ing bipedal warmachines.
Sam sneaks around between grunt mercenaries. I mean...
Honest question, why has Splinter Cell and other stealth games become forgotten while MGS still has a cult following?
Is it because Snake got in Smash Bros. ensuring kids will keep learning about him? Do gamers just have a Japanese games bias in general?
Metal Gear was the first one it started in the 80's and there are like 20 different Metal Gear games so there's much more to talk about. Meanwhile shit like Splinter Cell or Syphon Filter only got 2-3 games and that over 20 years ago.
The first Metal Gear was released on MSX2 in Europe too and it also got an NES port so there were actually quite a few people that played it. It was the second game that only got a Japanese release. And then there was also Snake's Revenge exclusive for the NES. Comparing Splinter Cell to Metal Gear is like comparing Monster Rancher to Pokemon. It did have a sizeable fanbase for some time, but it's not really comparable to the impact Metal Gear had.
>Do gamers just have a Japanese games bias in general?
Yeah, pretty much. Kojima attracted people who were into anime and shit as well. Not necessarily just fans of the stealth genre. That's why SC didn't have the same kind of pull.
MGS >Interesting story despite all the mess >Memorable characters >Quoted by people daily >Always innovated with every game >Pretty much defined stealth as a genre
Splinter Cell >Convoluted story that isn't very enthralling >Absolutely 0 interesting characters besides Sam >Slow gameplay >Didn't really do anything different with each game
MGS story and characters are infinitely more memorable and memeable than SC, which is a fantastic stealth game wrapped in a very grounded and relatively mundane world.
that used to be the appeal of tom clancy's games
I mean in Ghost Recon (2001) you have Russia invading Georgia in 2008 to help South Ossetian rebels...
Splinter Cell is a lot more grounded than MGS so probably Snake.
I still prefer Sam as a character though, he's more charismatic. And I'd still pick Chaos Theory over any MGS game.
Imagine being The guard in that scene and having to be all like "damn, Fisher, where did ya go, all invisible and shit with your body in the shadows. I totaly cannot see you right there over me with a giant bulb of light behind you. when all he really wants to do is shoot the fricking guy right in the balls. Like seriously. Imagine having to be that Soldier and not only have to ignore the guy in plain fricking sight right in front of you, the favorable lighting barely concealing the 3 green lights he carries around his head, because they're not the ones who have to walk pass there and watch the fricking elephant in the room jump from 9f onto the ground making the largest sound in the world and you have to act like you didnt noticed it. while he just sits there, load after load, until he perfected the take down. Not only having to tolerate the fricking audacity of hiding in plain fricking sight but his haughty attitude as everyone on here tells you that "DANM THATS THE BEST STEALTH GAME EVER MADE. WHERE DID FISHER GO? IS HE A GHOST OR SOMETHING??". You trained your entire life in the best boot camps in russia and was survived war zones that were considered suicide missions your ENTIRE CAREER coming straight out of the boonies in Afeganistam. You've never even seen anything this fricking disgusting before, and now you swear you can taste the sweat thats breaking out on his fricking balls while he just hangs in there waiting for you to pass, smugly assured that you are oblivious to the king of stealth(for that is what he calls himself), the stealth he worked so hard breaking every single light bulb in the previous room. And then the player reloads again, and you know you could kill the fricker before he even finishes climbing the wall but you sit there and endure it, cause you're a fricking Professional. You not going to lose your future main character status in a generic FPS game over this. Just bare it. Hide your face and bare it
>Literal mage who can see through walls, teleport and stop time
That said, he doesn't have much range. The modern characters might get away with a sniper if they go first
Snake would shuffle around the area clapping his ass cheeks together loudly then hide under a box while chatting on the phone for 20 minutes, frequently emitting anime grunts.
Sam would monitor the situation silently from a ceiling vent and then eliminate the threat using a single sticky shocker.
Snake alone for the fact that he was taught CQC from the man who invented it, let alone his massive arsenal he carries around every mission. Otacon would also out-hack Grim/Charlie every time.
I finished SC 1 and PT. I like the mechanics but the level design is painfully linear in how you must go underected, also the forced encounter are awful, the Oil Rig mission in 1 was one of the worst stealth missions in a game. How is CT compared to them?
>Who would win?
Win in what way? Snake is an action game character who can directly engage giant war robots in combat and win. Sam is a stealth game character who sneaks around precisely because one man can't fight an army. Snake would win in a fair fight. Unfortunately for Snake though, stealth is about being unfair. It's about not allowing your enemy to take a turn and winning the game without letting the opponent play. It's about cheating to win unfairly, so Sam would win by slicing Snake's throat in his sleep.
Neither, both are too old to move around without their knees hurting
Let's assume their at their peak
*they're goddamn I'm a fricking moron today

Snake, no question. Sam's stealth is a little too grounded to overcome most of the bullshit Snake is capable of.
This is pretty much it.
Snake is top-tier in a universe where there's massive mechs shooting literal missiles at you, where armies of ninjas come at you, where you can casually fight a fighter jet or literal moo'ing bipedal warmachines.
Sam sneaks around between grunt mercenaries. I mean...
Sam is definitely funnier, and he scored more than Snake
Every woman snake meets is clearly dtf though
Honest question, why has Splinter Cell and other stealth games become forgotten while MGS still has a cult following?
Is it because Snake got in Smash Bros. ensuring kids will keep learning about him? Do gamers just have a Japanese games bias in general?
Metal Gear is really popular
But wasn't splinter cell also really popular?
It wasn't as popular as MG
Splinter Cell 1 and MGS1 both sold for about 6 million copies
Metal Gear was the first one it started in the 80's and there are like 20 different Metal Gear games so there's much more to talk about. Meanwhile shit like Splinter Cell or Syphon Filter only got 2-3 games and that over 20 years ago.
But nobody played MG1 or 2 and Splinter Cell had like 6 mainline games with the last one being a few years before MGSV
The first Metal Gear was released on MSX2 in Europe too and it also got an NES port so there were actually quite a few people that played it. It was the second game that only got a Japanese release. And then there was also Snake's Revenge exclusive for the NES. Comparing Splinter Cell to Metal Gear is like comparing Monster Rancher to Pokemon. no, nobody gives a frick about smash in europe and it's the same
>nobody gives a frick about smash in europe
Europe only likes normalgay slop like Zelda and Pokémon, so that's not a surprise.
moron.
Splinter Cell has a cult following. That term is used for niche but beloved stuff. MGS is just popular because it's mainstream.
>MGS is popular because it’s mainstream
You may be legally moronic anon
You're illegally moronic
Metal Gear just hit more notes.
Mainly its memorable and insanely moronic narrative.
MGS
>Interesting story despite all the mess

Splinter Cell

They really can't be compared
MGS story and characters are infinitely more memorable and memeable than SC, which is a fantastic stealth game wrapped in a very grounded and relatively mundane world.

Hitman is still popular
Before Smash it was a playstation seller before it shat the bed with 3.
>Inb4 someone posts the Death Battle video and people start spegering out over Death Battle
I came to post the Death Battle because Snake deservedly won
Splinter Cell is a lot more grounded than MGS so probably Snake.
I still prefer Sam as a character though, he's more charismatic. And I'd still pick Chaos Theory over any MGS game.
shit battle, now sam vs 47 THAT'S kino
Splinter Cell was always a better series than MGS at stealth design in general. Shame the series never got a big budget game like MGSV got.
47.
>But he isn't even there!
Exactly.
Good work, 47.
>stealth game
>you wear nightvision googles that shine like a christmas tree
i enjoyed splinter cell but this was beyong moronic
>He doesn't know

Lel
Got me giggling like a fool...damn that was good.
Does any stealth game let the enemies see your silhouette?
Dumbass
Yeah but it looked cool
It's funny because if you look at any reflective surface they're actually not glowing.
JC Denton.
can someone post the pic with sam fisher sneaking in with a fricking desert eagle
>mogged
>Literal mage who can see through walls, teleport and stop time
That said, he doesn't have much range. The modern characters might get away with a sniper if they go first
Snake has at least 5 times the amount of weapons and ammo Sam usually has, he's also a better fighter when not sneaking.
merc vs spy is always kino
im surprise it never become a fad
Wasn't there some standalone mercs vs spies game?

Macaulay Culkin.
How does it go down if Sam Fisher has to take him on?
Solid Snake is as strong as Big Boss, and Big Boss can do this.
isnt this mgs2?
which is a simulation?
it's peace walker you ass
i dont care
>"I heard he retired"
I finished SC 1 and PT. I like the mechanics but the level design is painfully linear in how you must go underected, also the forced encounter are awful, the Oil Rig mission in 1 was one of the worst stealth missions in a game. How is CT compared to them?
CT is less linear and gives you multiple ways to complete objectives
CT really is peak Splinter Cell. And the soundtrack is just amazing. I played all of them except Blacklist. It's a shame it ended like it did
>Supersoldier vs regular dude
What the frick do you think.
Snake took down a tank using granades
>Who would win?
Win in what way? Snake is an action game character who can directly engage giant war robots in combat and win. Sam is a stealth game character who sneaks around precisely because one man can't fight an army. Snake would win in a fair fight. Unfortunately for Snake though, stealth is about being unfair. Whoever is being controlled by the player.
jokes on you
you lose on a cutscene after play
O-oh :c
