>He didn’t do shit but become a sad Jariyah
Not in the anime, they glossed over his whole depression arc and just made him a funny grandpa.
In fact, Journeys never clarified if Iris beat him or if he just retired.
Pretty sure she did since they magically decided to give Alder a cameo hanging out with Trip, Burgundy and Stephan when he didn’t really know them in the original. I think it was to emphasize this.
>Maybe, but strictly speaking they just say she beat someone unspecified. For all we know, Alder retired earlier and she fought the Eevee guy.
Yeah tho it would be weird randomly giving Alder a cameo in an episode where the current Champion says about 10 minutes later she defeated the former one. iirc Alder is defeated in the games and then retires afterwords so it's possible both happened since he doesn't just give up his title and retires.
Champion Blue is more iconic than Champion Iris, but in the context of the show Iris makes more sense since Gary gave up battling.
The better question is why they brought back Alain when they could have used other game Champions like Wallace or Alder.
Intuition is telling me it’s because they didn’t Wallace or Alder being their too steal Steven or Iris shine. After all, if they’re in the Masters Eight then that calls into question if Steven and Iris are truly the strongest in their regions or just got lucky that one time.
That’s exactly why, he needed to be redeemed. Maybe you could say the same about Iris tho
Eh, he’s had his time to shine and nothing came out of it. He was pretty much treated like a joke of a Champion and it didn’t help he was right next to Cynthia most of the time. Iris vs Ash fight should’ve happened way later in the series but it was kino having two Champion friends competing and Alder vs Cynthia wouldn’t have garnered as much hype and be just as irrelevant as Lance vs Diantha.
I would have preferred alder actually be the champion.
Why? He didn’t do shit but become a sad Jariyah

>Jariyah
You mean Jiraya?
Doesn't fit with his character anymore
Gary rightfully fricked off and did something else once he couldn't beat Ash
He beat Ash during Battle Frontier
Yea but I think Ash challenged him first not like Gary instigated it

Gary hasn't given up battling - see Battle Frontier and against Moltres
He just transitioned to a researcher
That's what I meant, he's a researcher now, he doesn't do leagues and tournaments anymore.

It would've been cool but I understand why they didn't
They should have Professor Oak be a former champion
Did they ever show Alder's full team?
Nope. All we ever saw was Bouffalant. Couldn't even give him Volcarona.
Cynthia was in more of the BW anime than he was. When the region was in danger because of Giovanni, she accompanied Ash and co.
I get the feeling someone on the anime staff really didn't like the guy.
Yeah, he weirdly just disappears from the show, doesn't even show up to host the League.
