Because I played DS1 at launch and used the Dragonhead cheat to rack up souls, then I replayed again years later, no cheats no summons, no OP build and beat all the bosses alone, which was a whole different (better) experience. So when someone tells me they beat Elden Ring and I see a Mimic Tear in their inventory, I just feel sad that they didn't dedicate enough time or didn't believe in their skills to have a better experience.

Souls games aren't about difficulty. Malenia being a hard boss relative to others in the game isn't what sold people on the game either. Actually I think by this point the difficulty is the least marketable feature of Souls games because their whole identity includes being tough and everyone knows that. Saying that it has tough bosses isn't saying much because that's already expected of it, so the appeal of each particular Souls game shifts on other features.

Bandai Namco absolutely knows that they can market their games as "hard" and capitalize on this to the greatest extent possible. And From Soft has purposefully made their games harder (still very easy in my opinion but this is still true) as a result, to sell more copies. They are extremely good at keeping their fingers on the meta in their fandoms and responding to them.

Souls games are punishing by design. But people tend to forget that FROM designs bosses as "big enemies that have lots of hp and a gimmick" first. The assumption that their bosses are supposed to be pinnacle of game design is all on community. In general FROM games are surrounded by unrealistic expectations just because they're not as accessible as your usual AAA title. Which is funny in and of itself because Souls aren't even AAA games in a strict way but are absolutely treated as such even though everyone knows the polish and production values just aren't there.

Exactly what I wanted to say. Let Me Solo Her is one of these tryhards that keep ruining this game, which is why I hate him too. Any game that start worshipping these players that gather to if for it's difficulty, are going to ruin that game in the long run.
Bamco shouldn't endorse these people that think the game is played for it's difficulty. The guy mentioned that it took him almost 300 tries before he could defeat Malenia. No game should require that much effort to complete. This, , says it all. These games were never meant to be identified for their difficulty.

Anything is fair game if you are doing it alone, even if you found an OP weapon/spell, though looking up online guides for better builds is cheating, and so is abusing bugs and glitches. If you did do that you had an inferior experience and didn't beat the game, and I say this unironically.

Hiding behind cynicism is the only way for a lot of people here to enjoy anything; i.e. denigrating others and their joy in things. It has nothing to do with being naive to find some joy in what happened to this guy. Nah, I actually don't like a lot of things. The reason I stayed on Ganker in the first place was that it was a place where people were more discerning about what they enjoyed. It's made people define themselves by opposing anything that Reddit likes. Well, Reddit likes almost everything, so Ganker hates virtually everything. Because I played DS1 at launch and used the Dragonhead cheat to rack up souls, then I replayed again years later, no cheats no summons, no OP build and beat all the bosses alone, which was a whole different (better) experience. So when someone tells me they beat Elden Ring and I see a Mimic Tear in their inventory, I just feel sad that they didn't dedicate enough time or didn't believe in their skills to have a better experience.

Summoning has always been a terrible and unnecessary mechanic.
Souls games aren't about difficulty. Malenia being a hard boss relative to others in the game isn't what sold people on the game either. Actually I think by this point the difficulty is the least marketable feature of Souls games because their whole identity includes being tough and everyone knows that. Saying that it has tough bosses isn't saying much because that's already expected of it, so the appeal of each particular Souls game shifts on other features.
Bandai Namco absolutely knows that they can market their games as "hard" and capitalize on this to the greatest extent possible. And From Soft has purposefully made their games harder (still very easy in my opinion but this is still true) as a result, to sell more copies. They are extremely good at keeping their fingers on the meta in their fandoms and responding to them.
FROM games do have a certain reputation Bamco does push. But I don't think I've seen reviews of the game that used "Malenia is really hard" as a marketing point.
FromSoft broke all the boss fights, but Malenia just happens to be the most broken. If these games are hard, it is by accident.
Souls games are punishing by design. But people tend to forget that FROM designs bosses as "big enemies that have lots of hp and a gimmick" first. The assumption that their bosses are supposed to be pinnacle of game design is all on community. In general FROM games are surrounded by unrealistic expectations just because they're not as accessible as your usual AAA title. Which is funny in and of itself because Souls aren't even AAA games in a strict way but are absolutely treated as such even though everyone knows the polish and production values just aren't there.
Ganker is missing this point hard. No one is impressed by LetMeSoloHer for his skills. He is a bug fix to a broken boss. FromSoft isn't really known for their quality and its always up to the community to fix their messes. One of the mistake they keep making is not making the boss fights beatable in sensible manner.

Exactly what I wanted to say. Let Me Solo Her is one of these tryhards that keep ruining this game, which is why I hate him too. Any game that start worshipping these players that gather to if for it's difficulty, are going to ruin that game in the long run.
Bamco shouldn't endorse these people that think the game is played for it's difficulty. The guy mentioned that it took him almost 300 tries before he could defeat Malenia. No game should require that much effort to complete. This, , says it all. These games were never meant to be identified for their difficulty.

Anything is fair game if you are doing it alone, even if you found an OP weapon/spell, though looking up online guides for better builds is cheating, and so is abusing bugs and glitches. If you did do that you had an inferior experience and didn't beat the game, and I say this unironically.
Ganker, and particularly Ganker, is a nexus of cynicism. Liking things is cringe. It makes you vulnerable. Hiding behind cynicism is the only way for a lot of people here to enjoy anything; i.e. denigrating others and their joy in things. What many don't understand is that they are ultimately hurting themselves far more than anyone else.
It has nothing to do with being naive to find some joy in what happened to this guy. There is the marketing and big corpo aspect, yes, you can argue about the double katana thing, yes, but in the end, if you think either of those is enough to completely outweigh the basic goodness of someone having fun in a video game, doing something quirky, and being recognized for it in a simple manner, then you are in a very bad place.
