Which is one of the reasons why I don't really care for the remakes despite all of the content and features they added.
HGSS also fricked up by making things more linear and not correcting levels. In GSC you could pass the candy bar guy and go all the way to Blackthorn (but not enter the gym) before doing the radio tower. In HGSS, candy bar guy won’t back off until you’ve beaten Archer, but they didn’t bother to bump up levels of trainers/wild mons after this point.

That’s every game before Gen 5. And every game after Gen 5 is so bloated with EXP your entire team is overleveled. Yet only Gen 2 is hated for its level curve. Gen5 is the only game to actually have something close to a good level curve due to giving extra EXP to lower level Pokemon and less to higher level Pokemon.

TMs are pretty bad in Johto too I'd say, Gen 1 was much more generous with powerful TMs so if you're not a Normal type (Strength is good enough), a Water type since Surf is always great, or a special attacker with hands (Elemental Punch TMs are great and infinite) you're gonna be in a bind since most pokemon still had shit movepools

In GSC you could pass the candy bar guy and go all the way to Blackthorn (but not enter the gym) before doing the radio tower. In HGSS, candy bar guy won’t back off until you’ve beaten Archer, but they didn’t bother to bump up levels of trainers/wild mons after this point.

That’s every game before Gen 5. And every game after Gen 5 is so bloated with EXP your entire team is overleveled. Yet only Gen 2 is hated for its level curve. Gen5 is the only game to actually have something close to a good level curve due to giving extra EXP to lower level Pokemon and less to higher level Pokemon.

TMs are pretty bad in Johto too I'd say, Gen 1 was much more generous with powerful TMs so if you're not a Normal type (Strength is good enough), a Water type since Surf is always great, or a special attacker with hands (Elemental Punch TMs are great and infinite) you're gonna be in a bind since most pokemon still had shit movepools

Cups discussions can be fun but I think the problem is it's more or less solved if you use rentals. I think the first game cups are more interesting because they're more esoteric requirements and trade backs from Gen 2 let you do silly shit like a Punchkazam in a gen he cannot learn it otherwise
i don't think PS2 is solved unless you want to count the infinite continue glitch. even if you manage to manip the right teams you can still get fricked by bullshit, especially in r2's later cups
i actually like ps2's cups better. ps1 only had the level restriction cups and ps2 had little cup and challenge cup (pseudo factory). i love the factory so i'd naturally gravitate toward the latter
The main reason I like PS1 cups better is the weird shit you can do with tradebacks and "illegall" under leveled mons even if the best solution is usually kust Starmie and Alakazam

trolls can't exaggerate Hoenn's or Sinnohs flaws because two had games not too long ago. Johto has essentially been in purgatory for over 15 years, so if some troll use Johto as a scapegoat, the casuals that make up the vast majority of the fanbase will fall for it since they don't even know what a "johto" is so they just take the level curve memes at face value.
