The console itself is a loss leader, and it cannot afford not to be.

So console manufacturers decided to add all the subscription services and various means of monetization in all nooks and crannies.

However, since there's an overwhelming abundance of old games that people still play, as well with general distrust of AAA, Battle Pass and MTX-filled games, consoles no longer have the capacity to break even, even if sales are high.

People may buy new consoles, and it gives the general illusion that they are doing well, but people are not buying the new "services" that actually were what kept consoles afloat in previous generations too.

I wonder, is something like the Steam Deck sold at a loss?

If it is sold at a loss it might not be a very big one compared to the standard consoles
The biggest upside is the promotion of Linux and possible shift in game devs making Linux secific builds of games

The biggest upside is the promotion of Linux and possible shift in game devs making Linux secific builds of games

Steam Deck is sold at a profit. It essentially uses repurposed laptop hardware from AMD that's cheap and plentiful. Valve's not in the business of loss leading and never will be because their business is entirely reliant on third party software compared to the big console makers who have a diversity of first party software. The console business works if you have a variety of first party software to sell as well.

Unless you are totally moronic like Sony was and spent all your money on first party single player games and destroyed your operating margins because you were spending $300 million on games. What an absolute fricking disaster.

7 homosexuals on Twitter (most xbox fans know better) believed a lie pushed by Twitter snoys.

Xbox is a service that makes pure profit, unlike Sony who spends billions of dollars making lgbtq propaganda. Gamepass is doing well, and keep in mind its far ahead of its time. One day we'll be playing games thru smart tvs, either by internet or ai getting super good, and gamepass will basically have zero competition. Playstation will still exist, but it will be like peawiener, and xbox will be netflix+max+hulu+disney+ESPN. Except instead of Ted 2 playstation will have lectures from black trans feminists. The problem is that despite Sony and Microsoft's revenues being huge, they aren't getting much actual profit because they doubled down on dumbass shit like vanity AAAA game development and paying out the ass for timed exclusivity. It's like they're getting 10b per year, frivolously spend 9.98b of it and then wonder why they aren't making money.

      Anonymous

Once one of them dies the other can make 20b per year and spend next to none. It's playing the long game.

The only question is how long shareholders will let phil ignore short term profits in order to kill sony.

    Consoles of the past:
    >physical media, smaller competitive stores, easy to find deals, can swap games with friends, new release sales price was cheaper
    >games Just Work, can put the disc in and have it play there and then with no bugs, no installing or updating, no back end support from the developers needed
    >games came in diverse focused genres and were smaller in scale, meaning you were playing more games more often and development didn't take forever
    >console itself doubles as a dedicated media player, meaning if you just wanted to have something that could play movies a console was often cheaper than a dedicated DVD/BluRay player

    Consoles now:
    >mostly digital media on mostly proprietary online storefronts, prices stay at release value for much longer because frick you where else are going to get their game? Swapping games is rare, release sales price is going up, and and you have to pay for online services now too because frick you what else are going to do?
    >games are released in buggy, unbalanced and sometimes outright unplayable states, need to be installed and repeatedly updated, all sorts of backend support in form of said fixes and DLC additions and in-game purchases
    >most tentpole console games are gargantuan mega projects that take 4 years at a minimum, often even longer, and cover multiple genres of gameplay, requiring hundreds of staff across multiple studios, working laboriously on photorealistic cutscenes that look good as promo material
    >consoles are no longer as necessary as media players as most TVs have in-built streaming apps now too
    >bonus: new versions of the consoles are released with better hardware

Execs convinced themselves that "console game" means these stupid 8 year development tentpole things that cost £70 and nothing else. For some arbitrary reason they thing a £25 8 hour game with simple graphics that does one thing really well isn't something profitable. It's like they only want to make The Ten Commandments and no slasher films.

I thought Helldivers 2 was a AAA game that they sold for $40 because it's live service

Helldivers 2 is AAA. It was made over 8 years with over 150 staffers working on it so it's over the nine figure mark budget wise. Sony put it at $40 because there's not a huge amount of content and because it was GAAS.

Sony can go frick themselves thinking I'll pay $10 a month per battlepass. They learned to nickel and dime their users for sure.

Because there’s literally no reason to not play on PC in an era of pre built gaming desktops, controller support, and HDMI cables. Additionally, indie games, esports, and twitch streaming have brought untolds amounts of prestige to PC gaming. Consoles are obsolete as hell.

Consoles were always the casual normie option for people who couldn’t pass the hurdles to game on PC. Those hurdles no longer exist.

Here is the thing: The problem is that as technology moves faster consoles are becoming outdated before they're even off the shelves. In order to stop a PS5 or Xbox Series X from costing $800-$900, they have to go cheaper on the parts and it is showing more and more. The Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 legitimately competed with PCs at the time. It was hard to have a PC that was more powerful than a console and it showed. However, when the PS4 and Xbox One came out, they were basically on par with PCs. With the release of the PS5 and Xbox Series X they were straight up less powerful than PC hardware already available. Back in the day you had to wait for the next generation of cards to release before you could really build a PC more powerful, now you have consoles releasing using hardware that is just outdated. The major thing that was pushed this generation was SSDs. SSDs! Things that have been in PCs for a decade now.
You're already seeing Sony AND Microsoft talk about a mid-generation refresh of the hardware when it feels like this generation has barely started. A bunch of the early generation releases were cross generation (PS4 and PS5, for example) and didn't look much better. The few actual next gen games that have released have had no significant visual improvement yet the games are struggling to reach 60 FPS and 30 FPS caps are back on these games. Load times got better and that is pretty much it. People are not interested in buying a new console, playing games that are available on their old ones, getting one or two actual new games, then having to buy a mid generation console refresh. For the price of a PS5 and a PS5 Pro you can build a nice gaming PC, turn down some settings if you have to, and get 60+ FPS on your games.

Also it is important to note that PC is a relatively open platform where nearly anyone can make and publish a game that becomes the next big thing. It can be hard to compete with that sort of free market.

      lol no they didn't.

Nah, that's revisionism. They were pretty top level CPU and GPU stacks at the time they came out. The PS3 maybe not in terms of GPU power because it was an off the shelf GeForce but the 360's GPU was a prototype AMD GPU that was hitting the same specs as AMD's top consumer GPU's at the time (And that was back in the day when GPU's were really expensive parts). PS3/360 only have the rep they have because the recession forced Sony and MS to push the next gen to 2013 so they were consoles that should have been replaced in 2010/2011 that got long in the tooth.

It was PS4/Xbone when the console specs collapsed into low quality laptop tier specs and it was cheaper and better to build your own PC instead of those consoles. PS3/360 was fine price/performance-wise at the time.

      Anonymous

Nintendo's fine this generation. It's the next one that's probably going to test them because they need to prove growth a bit better as they probably will match PS2 at best this gen so the market will probably want them to try bust past the 160 million console units sold mark to show the market still has growth capability. And they will have way more capable versions of "Black hole" games like Fortnite and FIFA along with Call Of Duty returning to the platform so their first party games will have to deal with a bigger threat than other platforms.

Microsoft has their own problems in terms of growing game pass despite now being the biggest publisher in the industry. Sony has their own problems in terms of their strategy is fricked and not making money. Nintendo has all the pressure on it to lead the way in the next few years. We live in interesting times.

Nintendo's biggest test is how they deal with 8.5 gen budgets/dev cycles. Seems like they're planning ahead with aggressive internal expansion and having their 2nd party partners double down on them like how Bamco made two studios to work specifically on Nintendo games.

Look at the Switch, then back to Xbox and Playstation. Never did Nintendo claim their console was more than a gaming device, neither did they partake in the grafics arms race. PS and Xbox has long suffered from feature creep and trying to dazzle the audience with more grafics, more! But turns out, that takes a long time to do, cost a shitton of money and by the time its finished the dedicated hardware you developed for is already outdated.

Sony and Microsoft couldve thrown in the towel at any point and tried their bets in Nintendo's ring, but both were too far gone and had too many shareholders to please so they kept going ahead and finally we see some change. Like always, they never fricking learn and it takes a monumental loss of revenue before they take any action.
