Why didn't you ask this in the tiefling thread where you just found out dhampirs existed instead of making another bait thread?

NTA It is a valid observation in my eyes, unlike other halfies Dhampirs are essentially born from a fusion of the living and the dead. I like to think that for this reason there is this subconscious response to the mystical and spiritual implications of such a being. Which sounds silly when people want to play tieflings, but tieflings are like those "1/16th indian" metis from Canada.

Vampires are already very human, so Dhampirs are only really needed when playing a vampire is prohibitive thanks to lore and/or mechanics.

That's why you play 4e so you can be a three level vampire.

People rag on this, but you can do the same in GURPS.

Dhampir are living, mortal creatures. That's completely different from being a vampire.

The mechanics of Dhampirs and Vampires depend on the setting.

      >Vampires are already very human
They're literally demonic abominations of the night, and not only that they tend to be far stronger than humans. Playing a Dhampir is acceptable because they're usually lower power level and have a distinctly human half that prevents them from outright descending into monsterhood.

This is precisely how Half-Orcs were made, and in this case it's a lot more justifiable.

I fricking hate dhampirs, what a moronic trope
    >hurr durr I'm a vampire except with none of the things that make a vampire durr
if you like dhampirs you may as well like the sparkling homosexuals in Twilight.

They are explicitly not vampires though.

because on the surface they sound like some mary sue fanfiction BS. Needless to say I was shocked to find out they were a thing in mythologies.

      >Needless to say I was shocked to find out they were a thing in mythologies.
I'm not sure why, I'm pretty sure [monster/magical creature] hybrid is a common mythological trope.

        Anonymous

I admit that most mythological hybrids I hear of tend to be
        >Demi-gods (obvious one)
        >Always have been half-human half-beast (harpies, centaur)
        >their monstrous parentage was honestly not that monstrous or just had a human form (kitsune, dragons, etc.)

Plus, most legends do agree vampires are basically moving corpses, so how they managed to knock a woman up is a bit insane.

Because it doesn't make sense. Vampries are an affliction, not a race. You can't have half-AIDS.

Peasants that thought sperm were little men that got planted inside of a woman's uterus where they then grew like a tree don't care about how logical it is for magical dead people who walk, talk, and apparently engage in mitosis to regenerate their tissue like they even know what the frick that is, to produce viable sperm. Surprise.

Why would them being undead hamper their ability to breed?
      >they are able to keep their muscles and skin healed and intact
      >need to feed thus implying some semblance of digestion
      >oh but producing gametes is a bit too far I can't suspend my disbelief for that

Unless you count half-drow or something, they're probably the most common, if only because half-fiends and half-celestials are very rarely allowed.

It's funny because most rulesets for them give them maybe some of the powers and the weaknesses.

Because they're not a full vampire, just like how a Genasi isn't a full Genie.

Because we've never had a game that really tried to promote them. TSR fricked up Ravenloft so hard that not only did they figure that "half-gypsy" was a better flagship race than dhampir, they didn't even INVENT their own take on dhampirs until they did a Transylvania splatbook for Masque of the Red Death, their failed Ravenloft 2.0.
