you don't need to understand a language to tell it's good, have you seen the chinese beaver meme? that's some good voice acting and I can't say single chinese word. What's more, because we speak english we can tell that eng dub are almost always trash because they try to emulate japanese intonation and pace which leads to cringe like what op posted
TLDR; dubs should do their own thing instead of trying to copy the japanese voice work

what do dubBlack folk think that I watch French movies with dubs? no that shit is also with subtitles
impossible to translate is also such a moronic cope
I've read japanese books with quality translation that are way more complex than your average animu and have more japanisms inside yet the translator can translate it just fine by clarifying things with the original author
troonylators will always be a thing because games and anime are perceived as an inferior slop media compared to books and movies which are seen as high art
movies went through the same process and used to be insulted as blinking lights so maybe one day games will see the respect they deserve

        Not quoted but yep.
I genuinely don't understand how you went from programmer's voices then AAA-tier talent like David Warner, Tony Jay, etc and then straight into garbage bin territory that's significantly worse than programmer's voice acting.
It's actually nuts how quickly things fell apart.

XBC2 especially was a step back from XBC1. It's not the the bong voices, just performances themselves.

      Anonymous

It's a combination of the voice director not giving a shit about the takes and Nintendo being super strict with giving proper context because the game had a simultanious release.
Xenoblade, when it was dubbed, had already been out for a while. So they didn't care if shit got "spoiled" to the actors, so they got full context for every scene, they could watch the cutscenes. XC2, nope, couldn't watch shit, no context, just words on the page. Director had to tell them very small snippets for some context. Didn't even get dialog from the other characters. This is on top of the problem of the voice director just flat out disappearing every so often to voice characters himself, so if the VA wanted context, they were told no, too bad, director was busy.

        Anonymous

English VAs are infamous for being unprofessional and breaking NDAs in intereviews and over twitter at a moment's notice so i'm not surprised.

          Anonymous

Yeah, it happens a lot and Nintendo were the first to really crack down on it. Honestly, the idea of simultaneous releases really has fricked dubbing. It just isn't possible. Give a week between release and dubs will get much better.

            Anonymous

It'd need way more than a week, because that'd mean the game would have to be released, they would have to play it, it'd have to be recorded and re-lip synced and tested then everything else that involved game certificaiton/publishing

            Anonymous

It's going to be taken over by AI given time imo.
Voice acting is one of the pain points of development already (forces you to finalize dialogue months prior to when you'd actually want to, requires studio time, costs a shitton, NDA issues for big studios etc) and people who demand everything to be voice acted don't really have any real quality requirements on the voices (or most of the US industry would be out of a job) beyond them not sounding robotic.

              Anonymous

At this point that's the only real hope I have of English dubs being any good in the future. I'll take a dub that's obviously made using AI tools even if the quality is meh compared to this cancer we have to deal with otherwise. It just has to be 'good enough'.

now that you bring that there were so many examples of this in the game. delivery was so "I have no idea what the context for this line is" it became jarring.

Almost all of the renames are pointless. Like instead of having the Titans all named after the Latin words for the seven deadly sins, they decided to use a different language's word for each sin/Titan

I assume anglo countries just don't have an established voice acting industry. Most of the entertainment is already in their native language for them so there's simply no need for it.
Meanwhile where i live opera singers get hired for musical dubs and 1 VA can have a career voicing hundreds of different characters in film. it's not on japan's seiyuu level sure but it's something.

      Anonymous

Being able to sing is pretty much a requirement to be a seiyu. Meanwhile in dubs they just cut song segments cause no one can sing

The stupid thing is the actual voice actors for XC2 aren't really bad at all, it's the atrocious voice direction and the fact that they were only given a single take for every single line in the game apparently. That and the fact that they literally copy-pasted in a few areas (for example, Rex's screams in a few of the cutscenes are the exact same, and it's that one fricking annoying one that everyone uses as a prime example of how bad the english dub is).

English dub legitimately made me drop XBC2. I don't want to play in Japanese because some voices like Nia are great, but in general? Goddamn.
