There's no genuine lore reason, Gayfreak just wanted to nerf Dragon types like the huge boring gayBlack folk they are.
It only makes sense for literal DRAGONS to be apex 'mons in botg the meta and outside of that but they had to ruin it with the gay shit to counter that to the point there's nothing special about the type anymore.
Also they were creatively bankrupt even then, ripped-off dragon quest in the beginning anyway.

I never said it was. Balance is gay, it makes sense for the only type to consist of a shit ton of really rare and powerful mons to be OP. It's thematic.

fairies are weak to cars
fairies were introduced during X/Y that was set in France/generic Europe and had a heavy inspiration from faery tales and european folclore.
In european tales
1) faeries connected to dragons and can rule them
2) faeries are afraid of steel because steel: axes that cut their trees/weapons that shoot their animals of the forest (life forces of the fairy world)

Because the fey are horrible abominations that should be purged, and while fey may seem benign at a glance their realm is so horrid that with but a bit of deception they can steal away a dragon's power and life. Frick fairies, frick the feywild, frick all of it. Yes I did have a D&D game take us to the feywild where we got fricked with almost constantly to the point I have developed an immense hatred and never use the feywild in my games' settings, how could you fricking tell?

Hilariously after that whole business I retired the character that went through it (we'd ended up in her homeland and due to family bullshit as the daughter of the local lord she had to go to war with some drown and goblins on her father's behalf) I ended up rolling up a changeling, so your post is even funnier. That character is the one that made me hate paying casters.

I still think Grass and Bug should be resistant to Fairy. Heck, I'd even take Bug being immune to Fairy to give bug types a nice, useful defensive niche.
