I've always thought it was just a modern version of performance fog. In the N64 days, it was put in every 3D game to push culling distance closer to the camera, then disappeared as hardware got better. Now it's back because companies won't pay for decent programmers, forcing Epic to come up with Nanite for UE5.

That's a separate issue, this is purely a post-processing issue as far as I know. Bad fog continues to exist, though, and I hate it.
If they did that every game would look the same. They have do shit like add filters to make it look distinct. In the PS1 days every game looked different because of art style. Nowadays everyone goes for realism so they all end up looking too similar, adding more effects is the modern developer's solution.

I hate it. I can't wait for this trend to be over, it's genuinely worse than the piss filter of mid '00s vidya.
The video game industry is really bad to work in. Unless you're a corporate bootlicker, most people are not willing to do good work for shit pay long term with no promise of advancing. Society is just collapsing right now considering the majority of Gen Z believe they will never own a house. What's happening in video games is just a symptoms of a greater problem
The closest you're going to get to that is Witch Trainer and Innocent Witches
Hogwarts management sim
I played this a bit when it first came out, haven't touched it much since so I can't really comment on how much it's improved in early access but it was fun.

It's not just vidya, it feels like for most forms of media new popular releases are forgotten in a month while anything popular from 2000-2010 are classics that will never be forgotten
This one in particular was about as bland as open world games get, it's only selling point is the IP attached to it. And like this post says, novelty plays a big part in how memorable something ends up being. The gaming industry is pretty old at this point so it's getting harder and harder to make something original, and big game studious especially will go with something that's been proven to be popular before since dev costs are so expensive these days.
Pokemon is far more than just a gaming franchise and Castlevania only gets occasionally mentioned by a small group of fans. Hogwarts Legacy also gets talked about if you think Castlevania is getting active discussion.
Games tend to have more staying power than that if there's a good enough draw.
Maybe not daily threads, but once in a while something'll pop up.
Like Alpha Centauri. It's not 24/7, but it's not very rare either.
This game simply wasn't that great
it's a fine little open world thing but the story and gameplay aren't anything that would merit a bunch of discussion. Combine that with the "controversy" that scared off normie review outlets from talking about it a lot and you have a game that came out and made a frickton of money but wasn't talked about forever
Because if games don't force you to log in for your daily chores now, and update each month with some time wasting shit then it doesn't get talked about for long.
Because corpo c**ts and their investor ponzi scheme buddies have taken root in the industry and reduced games to just "products".
Used to be games were driven by art or some kind of creative vision, where a bunch of weirdos locked themselves in a garage or office; but those days are long gone.
tl;dr
rich frickers ruined everything, the games don't touch your soul because they've got no soul
I didnt even play it despite all the shilling
As a 'shitskin' why the frick would I want to see MORE shitskins in games? Fricking moronic feminist woman Rowling thinks shes doing the world a favor
All these fricking unreplayable open world games that are designed to be a tiring 40-50 hours long, most of which is cutscenes featuring ugly Black folk.
Stop making open world games. Stop making games that are about getting from cutscene to cutscene. The best game is a game I finish and IMMEDIATELY want to replay the whole thing.
Hogwarts is just a shallow, repetitive and relatively bad game with nothing remarckable happening in it outside of the Hogwarts Castle being rendered pretty cool. The actual game is incredibly boring. The story is absolutely forgettable, as are the characters. You barely even do frick all of anything in Hogwarts itself. Each "class" is basically a cutscene that you go to once and that's it. 90% of the game is roaming around the countryside murdering people as a fricking student because apparently "dark wizards" and "poachers" all want to murder you so you have to murder them back racking up a body count that puts voldemort to shame.
It's not like it's not a fun game, the combat is OK it's just nothing special and gets very old and repetitive really fast once you figure out the fastest spells to just kill shit fast. Even the "hardest" enemies in the game (trolls) are killed with ease once you figure out you just have to toss their throws back at them to stun and can do that an infinite amount of times in any fight.
Honestly the most fun I had in the game was just flying around on a broomstick, the races were kind of fun too b but there's only 3 of them. Otherwise the story is completely forgettable and pointless. All the mechanics for the room of requirement and whatnot are also just a waste of time, you don't need any of that shit because the game is easy as frick, like upgrading gear for example, it's all just pointless and you toss literally 95% of the gear you find or sell it to a store and because there's an inventory limit you have to keep running to a store to sell stupid clothing items you don't need or just toss them.
I hate saying this, but the game should have been some kind of server-based multiplayer situation where you can play with other people that are also Hogwarts students, at least that might make more sense for it to be a more co-operative experience.
>open world slop collecathon foundation >shallow gameplay >boring story >entire product is style over substance
Make good games and they won't be forgotten.
t. someone that genuinely wanted to like and enjoy this game
No depth/replayability
>washed-out
>low contrast
>green filter
Why does every other modern game look like this?
>incel hates the color green
touch grass
But they hate green!
Green suppresses appetite. Humans are obligate carnivores.
>incel hates washing
take a bath
it's clearly an SDR screenshot
just get an OLED and turn on HDR if you want the best picture know to man in 2024
happy?
Yes, actually
Why is it like this, though?
like what
Why do so few games these days have proper color balance / use the full dynamic range of either SDR or HDR

NTA, like shit though
Why are modern graphic artists so bad at their job?

https://www.nexusmods.com/hogwartslegacy/mods/17
You used to be able to turn all that off in the settings...
Looks objectively worse without the fog though.
It's to hide the noise from ray tracing.
>make her a cringe lesbian
that's why they are
You say that like they were actually gonna allow a teacher to have a romantic relationship with a student, this isn't Persona anon
Where's the Hogwarts teacher sim
The closest you're going to get to that is Witch Trainer and Innocent Witches

Lesbians are fine so long as they are hot.
Only when they're bad
It's by design.
Because there are a lot of them all competing for our attention and more are made each day.
why was everyone cross-eyed in hogwarts?
modding on unreal engine is so shit
It's not just vidya, it feels like for most forms of media new popular releases are forgotten in a month while anything popular from 2000-2010 are classics that will never be forgotten
Many are just busy work.
yeah whats up with that? why do those games sell so well? they are boring as shit
Gaming as a medium relies heavily on novelty. When's the last time you truly had a unique experience?
This one in particular was about as bland as open world games get, it's only selling point is the IP attached to it. And like this post says, novelty plays a big part in how memorable something ends up being. uh last month when i first played darksiders 1 and 2
>no pubes
Why do you think a single player game should be talked about 24/7 for years on end? Game came out, people played, and then moved on.
ppl still talk about pokemon and castlevania
Pokemon is far more than just a gaming franchise and Castlevania only gets occasionally mentioned by a small group of fans. Hogwarts Legacy also gets talked about if you think Castlevania is getting active discussion.
check out /vr/ there are at least 3 castlevania thread always
>/vr/
What other retro games are there to talk about? *clicks* Oooohhh, Earthbout, Tetris, MGS, FF. What, a, board,
Games tend to have more staying power than that if there's a good enough draw.
Maybe not daily threads, but once in a while something'll pop up.
Like Alpha Centauri. It's not 24/7, but it's not very rare either.
Smooth brain mindset like that is part of why games are shifting to being terminally online
This game simply wasn't that great
it's a fine little open world thing but the story and gameplay aren't anything that would merit a bunch of discussion. Combine that with the "controversy" that scared off normie review outlets from talking about it a lot and you have a game that came out and made a frickton of money but wasn't talked about forever
honestly who gives a shit, if i enjoy it i dont care if anybody else remembers it
Because if games don't force you to log in for your daily chores now, and update each month with some time wasting shit then it doesn't get talked about for long.
Who is this?
Botany teacher from that Harry Potter game from last year.
Can you look down her, uhh, blouse?
Why is she in a bikini?
it's a mod
Is that her normal outfit?
Mrs. Bush, my favourite teacher
Are they making a sequel?
There is zero chance they aren't, it sold extremely well
They would be stupid not to capitalize on the success of the first one. I'm kinda surprised they didn't announce DLC.
The lack of DLC is surprising to me but maybe they figured they're better off just starting on a sequel immediately.
Doesn't that entire studio exist just to make Harry Potter games at this point?
Because corpo c**ts and their investor ponzi scheme buddies have taken root in the industry and reduced games to just "products".
Used to be games were driven by art or some kind of creative vision, where a bunch of weirdos locked themselves in a garage or office; but those days are long gone.

I see
why didnt these hot witch b***hes take off in the 3d porn scene?
I didnt even play it despite all the shilling

I think most people WANTED IT to be more of a life-sim but instead it's just kind of a generic modern game.
>i cant frick some cuties
whats the point of this game?
>open world slop collecathon foundation
>shallow gameplay
>boring story
>entire product is style over substance
Make good games and they won't be forgotten.
t. someone that genuinely wanted to like and enjoy this game
Too many of them
