Skull Kid has far more character to him than Geno. It's completely understandable why people like him. Geno is pretty stoic. I've never understood the appeal. I'm assuming you had to be there for Mario RPG in the 90's.

it's just one of the autistic hyperfixations of this eternally contrarian board. Geno is loved here for the sole reason that he is overlooked, shunned, forgotten. His design and stuff is of secondary importance.

My theory, aside from just a cool design, is that SMRPG was a lot of kids introduction to JRPGs. Unlike other JRPGs the health and attack numbers are relatively low throughout. Suddenly Geno pulls out a 9999 attack. That shit can leave an impression.

Before that, play Illusion of Gaia. They're kind of related to each other along with Soul Blazer (I've never played that, though). Illusion of Gaia is amazing, though.

Chrono Trigger and EarthBound I probably don't even need to mention, but I will. Great RPGs. Those 2 plus Mario RPG are games I played so much as a kid.

One of my personal favorite, probably lesser known titles, is E.V.O. Search for Eden. It's a side scrolling action game where you use EXP you get from killing enemies to evolve. You start as a fish and can evolve different parts of your body. You later become a lizard, and so on. Pretty cool.

Simply because Geno is the literal only character of his species across all bajillion IPs Nintendo got.
He is a soulless puppet possessed by a star. People get attached to unique shit that stands out like this.

    Geno will never be canon

      Anonymous

His only chance of not becoming canon hinged on SMRPG never being remade / remastered due to expired licenses with Square, and SNES rom ports on Virtual Console not counting because it's still the old game.
It got brought back and got featured in Smash, so it's completely over for doomers.

No but having a prehistoric IP brought back is validating their existence.

If a game got forgotten by Nintendo for over a decade and didn't even get mentioned on Smash it would be given as a confirmation it's dead, so reverse logic applies.

            Anonymous

Its not canon because Smash occurs within the imagination of a child or are you saying characters like Snake Sephiroth and now canon to the Mario universe

              Anonymous

              >are you saying characters like Snake Sephiroth and now canon to the Mario universe
Everyone knows Smash is a form of Nintendo acknowledging its own IPs, the ingame Smash canon is window dressing for that fact. Lack of acknowledgment implies it's dead.
Smash alone is not indication of canon, but preservation in Smash implies acknowledgment the IP is still alive. Then if it gets properly brought back it won't be a surprise, just cementing the fact it is canon.

I have always wondered that. I played the game as a child and never saw anything special about Geno, but if I remember correctly, he makes a heroic entrance in the game. I don't know if I'm correct, but he starts as if he was just a toy, but during a crisis, he appears from nowhere and saves Mario and his friends with his machine gun arm or something like that.
I think this entrance impressed a lot of kids and they came to love Geno because of this.

geno is cool but genogays are strange, he's never coming back and it's shown as such in the story. at least you get to see him again in the remake, but now we'll just have another generation of genogays in denial. Black person Geno doesn't need more than that because his character tantamounts to what that costume already provided.
Why are you bringing up Sans? Is he also an OC made by Nintendo in a Nintendo game?

Again: what does his inclusion in the main roster entails over what you already got on the Mii costume? Would he be able to speak if he was included there? But he isn't voiced.

Your reason for his validation hinges on him being positioned in the character select screen over a costume option that accomplishes the exact same purpose.
It's about as flimsy of an excuse like saying he needs an Amiibo to be recognized.

Nintendo and Sakurai had one job, they put effort into San, Cuphead, Bomberman and Shatae but couldn’t do the same for Geno

Conspiracy time, they knew the remake was in the works and didn’t want to give him a good Mii costume because they want to save his big getting in smash moment for next game when he’s actually a fully playable character.

I mean, they did do that with K. Rool and Inkling, but at the same time I doubt they're planning that far ahead this time, seems like they're actually taking a break from Smash development

Conspiracy time, when they were negotiating for Cloud, Sephiroth, Hero, and Sora, they said "hey, what if we threw in a Geno Mii costume and a SMRPG remake? They're easy money and maybe they'll make those spergs shut the frick up."

Full game remake easy money over Sakurai making a character for them. I don’t think a full game remake is to shut up what this board has deemed an annoying fanbase. Geno getting a redone Mii would have been tossing a bone to shut up some spergs, face it you Geno haters got comfortable thinking you won when it’s been the exact opposite all along.

I would also prefer Geno to be Base Roster too, so he doesn’t suffer the Banjo and Sora curse of being paid DLC but not feeling like a DLC, that’s just my personal opinion (fricking Inkling feels more like DLC than Banjo and Sora) and plus every DLC only gets played for a few days and then people move on and wait for the next character like with Ultimate.

Sakurai mentioned Geno in an interview where he said his gun arm was cool and that he'd be an easy addition.

Rostergays latched on and likely only learned about Geno because of that.

That being said, Geno *is* cool and has a lot of neat moves that could translate well into smash, but you're absolutely right that that applies to like...fricking every character.

The whole fixation on Geno is less about the character himself and moreso about their love of SMRPG. (Not that people hate Geno, mind you) SMRPG is kind of an anomaly. Despite being a pretty solid RPG with a lot of charm that sold pretty well back in the day, it never really found itself being as fondly remembered as Paper Mario or the Mario & Luigi games. This is mainly for three reasons:
1 - It released at the tail-end of the SNES's life cycle. By this point most people's focus was on the shiny new 3D consoles, so most people wouldn't think twice about it compared to Super Mario 64 or anything on the PlayStation
2 - The internet hadn't taken off quite yet. Back then, most people's exposure to new games was limited to gaming magazines and whatever their friends were playing which, again, leaned towards the new 3D games
3 - When the internet did eventually take off and emulators became more widespread, the only people who would use them to play something like SMRPG were stinky fricking nerds. Most casual gamers/internet users simply couldn't get into something like that, their focus was on different shit like Neopets, AdventureQuest or the numerous Newgrounds flash games like Ghost Hotel or Sonic the Pervert

As a result, the only people who played SMRPG were weirdos and college students who fell in love with the game's wacky atmosphere and simple mechanics, and since they had access to the burgeoning internet they were able to share their love of the game with like-minded peers, forming a cult following around the game. This resulted in them expressing their love in the form of fanart and numerous flash animations, such as the many Smash skit compilations and, of course, Rawest Forest

    (Cont.)

This was also around the time when Smash Bros. had taken the world by storm. Melee was a massive hit, so expectations were high for the new game. "Which characters were getting in this time?", "Are there any hints towards who we're getting next?". Brawl speculation was a wild time. As such, plenty of people who loved SMRPG would desire a character from there to get in

Of all the characters, Geno was considered the most likely SMRPG character to make it in. This was because Smash games tend to gravitate towards main characters above all others, and for good reason. Most players are likely to be familar with them on account of them being playable, and they're often given lots of cool skills and abilities that are ideal for a game like Smash. Since Mario, Peach and Bowser are already in and Mallow is a weenie, Geno was the only good option. Plus, he's pretty cool

And so the campaigning began. Much like other Smash fanbases at the time, the Geno fans began to advertise their chosen champion. Days upon days of forum posting, fanart production, even real life letters and petitions sent directly to... some random intern at Nintendo of America, probably. They kept this up until the bitter, yet expected, end.

But while many Smash fanbases would throw in the towel, the Geno fans remained devoted to their puppet. This was because they got the one thing that only select Smash fanbases have ever received: validation.
In an interview sometime after Brawl's release, Sakurai revealed that he had wanted to include Geno as a fighter in Brawl, but ultimately it didn't pan out. To say this galvanized Geno supporters was an understatement, and while they didn't get Geno for Brawl, they wouldn't give up. They'd be back for the next game, ready to shout louder and campaign harder

Now at this point you may be wondering:
        >What the hell's so important about Smash? I mean sure, it's a cool game, but at the end of the day it's just a game. Why waste so much time on this?
While most people don't want to admit it, Smash's main appeal is its roster. Who gets in and who doesn't is the primary focus of discussion for all Smash fans. No one ever has this level of fervor for Stages, Trophies or, god forbid, Assist Trophies or Mii Costumes, it's all the characters. But why is that?

Because characters are the most important aspect of our stories. They can make us laugh, make us cry, make us angry beyond all comprehension, or relieve us of our negative emotions. They are conduits for which we can experience all manner of fun and frights. We watch them struggle, we watch them fall, but we also watch them rise above all trials and personal hangups to become better than they were before. In them, we can believe ourselves capable of overcoming our own problems

Smash has managed to assemble a large collection of these characters together, so much so that it's considered something of a who's who of video games, a veritable Video Game Hall of Fame. If your character is playable in this game, then they matter, the series the comes from matters, your nostalgia matters. Your love of some silly game from the mid-to-late 90s that most people overlooked now matters. But most importantly, you are now able to once again connect with that silly game through them

A Trophy/Spirit offers nothing that you can't already get from looking at official art on the internet. A Mii Costume is a perverse facsimile of what you love, just another picture on a teenage wall. An Assist Trophy feels like a Monkey's Paw: you got to see the characters you love again, but you're denied the catharsis of truly connecting with them. The game connects with them while you sit in your proverbial chair and watch

Playable status, on the other hand, allows you to best connect with your character and their world. Their movements are your movements, their attacks are your attacks. Their victory and losses are yours. It doesn't matter what you can even do with them in the game, so long as there's something you can do and you can do it with them

But of course, it doesn't entirely end there. If your character gets into Smash and is cemented as one of gaming's greats, then that can also potentially translate into more. More games, more stories, more acknowledgement. Your chosen character can live on in their new adventures and always be with you

It sounds incredibly gay, but it's true, and it extends to pretty much all Smash fanbases, whether you want to believe it or not. Smash is a nostalgia bukkake, and everyone wants their turn to be a part of it, to feel that sweet, sweet dopamine rush that come from nostalgia validation. Geno supporters haven't gotten that yet, but getting a remake of SMRPG is the next best thing, and arguably better since Smash has been in decline these last few years for a variety of reasons

TL;DR, Genogays want Geno in Smash so they can get more SMRPG and get high on their nostalgia

I'd say the Mario RPG Remake was a better outcome than Geno getting in Smash, I've been a Banjogay for a long time, and while I appreciate his inclusion, I think most of us would've been happier with Banjo getting a brand new game lmao.

Sure, but I think regardless of that, they still got something new besides Smash, which honestly is a better outcome than just being added into this platform fighting game, like I would even appreciate a Banjo-Kazooie remake, just literally anything that isn't Smash.

This was also around the time when Smash Bros. had taken the world by storm. Melee was a massive hit, so expectations were high for the new game. "Which characters were getting in this time?", "Are there any hints towards who we're getting next?". Brawl speculation was a wild time. When the game first came out, the previous mario games were super mario world, where bowser is the final boss, and yoshi's island, where baby bowser is the final boss. Not many people were spoiled about the game not having bowser as the final boss. So, believe it or not, many mario fans were surprised and shocked at the start of the game, being some unknown sword thing takes over bowser's castle and is the new villain. As for Geno, in his very first appearance, his literal toy form knocks mario out, and after coming to life he tries to fight a boss all by himself. Mallow's first appearance defined him as a coward, but not this guy. Also, he has guns, in a mario game, he just seemed really different and unique for an ally in a mario game, plus he seemingly came from beyond the stars. Look if you can't see why that's enough to make him stand out, I dunno what else I can say.

Super Mario RPG was originally going to have Mario dressed as a knight riding a horse and wielding a sword. They let Japanese fans decide if they wanted that or Mario using a hammer with more traditional series elements instead. Obviously the crowd chose the latter.

I really have no clue. I'm a massive fan of the game and considered Paper Mario a complete letdown when it came out because it wasn't SMRPG2. At no point ever did I give more than a passing shit about Geno. All he was was the less useless of the two buttholes nobody cared about. Mario/Peach/Bowser was the party and there was no deviation from this except when the story forced it. I wasn't even aware there was a rabid fanbase for him until the Smash Bros kvetching really kicked in during Japan Time.

Getting Geno meant I would get a beautiful stage reimagining this game in HD in addition to an amazing rendition of Beware the Forest's Mushrooms by Yoko Shimomura. things like this make me realize when I just don’t care about some things other people care about. I want to yell at all you Geno fans but really it’s just me not having played SMRPG and not feeling it, not really your fault
