In game chat is all dead because people are too afraid to talk so friend groups all use Discord and you will rarely see in game chat.

Almost as if the good ol' days of gaming, we couldn't afford to alt-tab a game without risk of it crashing, so things like keeping IRC or Teamspeak open in the background wasn't as common for MMOs, so people communicated ingame out of necessity.

I had no prior warning's or ban's on my ff14 account. I rarely typed in game. One day I called someone an idiot in a dungeon for stalling and wasting everyone's time because he wanted to talk about his math teacher job. I got hit with a 10day ban the next day.
From that point on I just stopped typing in game, why would I take a chance of giving someone advice or calling someone out for something dumb if I will just get banned anyway.

In my experience, wow has been like that since group finder launched in wotlk. I was there the week it happened. I was just like that homosexual comic with the cat that tries to start a conversation during group content. Ultimately, it helped me kick the habit and drop the genre altogether, but it feels uncanny having been a part of this social experience that has become obsolete

TBC community was peak. Its so weird seeing the social dynamics of modern games. I cant even explain to zoomers how, in 2006, you could log into a game to play and chat with people. There was no meta, there were no sweats and rankings, you didnt have to have discord open in another monitor to carry on a conversation. In theory, you can still do all that now, but the spirit is just lost. Even when I successfully recreate it for a minute on a private server it just feels pathetic. personally i think it's a combination of these two things. discord/reddit are the main places people go to talk about specific games now, rather than doing it on official forums or just in game. there *was* sort of a meta back in the day, but you would discuss it and figure it out by talking with other high levels players, rather than reading it on a discord guide/watching a youtube video. i remember like 10 years ago i tried to get into destiny 1 and my friends wanted to do the raid. they told me "anon, you need to watch a youtube video to know how to do this, otherwise you're going to be lost" like motherfrickers you haven't played this yet and you just watch youtube videos on how to do it god i hate gaming so fricking much

People did those things back then because they were engaging in a different kind of free play, formless and not goal-driven, they saw the game as much as a virtual world as a game. Then the companies figured out people subscribe longer if you keep them chasing carrots on a treadmill so they started designing features to lock the players into an instrumental play mode that only cares about goals. Take a look at all the shit there is to do in whatever game you posted, I'm guessing it has a dozen subsystems that do nothing but keep players isolated and running around doing useless activities by themselves.

There used to be forums and Vent but they weren't anywhere as heavily trafficked as the modern wiki or discord server. Only die-hards or older players really trawled MMO forums back then, but now the wiki is standard or borderline mandatory for figuring out MMOs
Vent was only ever used to be organized in group events thoug. For the most part anyway. Of course you would have those people that would hang out in there all day and expect others to do so as well. But most social interactions would take place in the game chat.
Now you have "official game discords", "server discords", "guild discords", "LFG discords", "Roleplay community discords" and so on.
Might not be the ONLY reason but it's one of them. You can also blame social media in general. Because people just get their social interactions on those sites and or on discord and will then not seek to socialize within the game as much and just focus on the "gameplay" instead.

Matchmaking for everything. I played on a dedicated server for the first time for a few days in a row and it was weird actually seeing the same names all the time and not being friends with them on Steam. So much better.
I played a game called murder miners for a while. Super small playerbase, probably less than a hundred people. Dedicated servers and weekly matches hosted by the devs where they would do Q&A about the sequel. So much fun before the community died completely. It was a halo clone with minecraft style map editor.
