I've thought about that before with the overabundance of games and media abusing the blue/pink color scheme trying to look '80s and retro, at some point I wasn't buying it, it was just done to 'be hip'. And it's certainly different than a game being Soulless, but sometimes I feel even more repulsed by the Forced Soul.
Spiderverse is that way for me too. The choppy fps, music and countless references to Spider media end up being too much, it's clearly a product designed to have as much 'SOUL' forced into it, so it feels fake. Forced Soul. A lot of WHAT Riot attempts with League of Legends feels the same to me, such as the Emotes. A lot of people fall for them but it's such a fake thing in my opinion.
Also cartoons trying to replicate Adventure Time are forced soul, and it does catch a lot of public but I see it for what it is, just replicating the quirkyness while being empty. Rick and Morty is the same thing.

Naturally once SOUL was understood, some lizards would try to replicate it and that's how you end up with Forced Soul, which unlike Soulless, does get some things right and that gets it some audience.

Mario Maker is a funny editor, but a terrible game. Port of nsmbu sold well. And normalgays hype from the movie is still strong.
Maker 2 sold 8m~, while U Soup sold 15.5m. The market is absolutely there; many just want a 2d Mario to pick up and play without the hassle of finding/downloading courses.

The stage design and physics are literally the most basic you can possibly get. All the modern 2D Mario games are ridiculously easy, I remember playing through like 2/3s of one bored out of my mind because there was not a single challenging thing I encountered. Mario physics are not basic. It's the only popular 2d platformer that has momentum in movement. Other platformers have either full midair control or no control at all (classic castlevania style jumping).

I had my friend stream his first time playing a basic 3d platformer, the guy is 25, and he was falling into pits and getting frustrated. these games seem basic, but you would be surprised how poorly some people jump around in a video game.
