If anything, the jump to 3D highlighted how fricking boring and sanitized they were. No personality to speak of for any of them. Also their battles were indeed gigalame, like underratedly weak bosses that would make Geeta blush

The Gameboy games also had flat and bland Gym Leaders, but they get a pass because there isn't as much of a disconnect (also because of nostalgiagays but you know). The graphical improvements suggest there should be more to Gen 6's characters than there are, and that's why everyone dunks on them.
