People had internet back then, but hardly anyone spent time on it for long durations since it was slow, and the internet would cut out if you got a phone call. Hardly anyone was using cell phones at that time too, so the 90s to the mid 00s may as well have been pre-internet. I'm 27 and my brother taught me about mapping dungeons with a pencil since looking up walkthroughs at that time wasn't the most convenient.

Bullshit. AOL chatrooms/YAHOO chatrooms were popular as frick in the 00s. Shit like Newgrounds, HabboHotel. MEEBO. The games on CartoonNetwork and Nickoldeon. You're clearly a zoomer that has no idea what the frick they're talking about. Same thing with cellphones. Everyone had Boosts with the bullshit chirp. And then everyone moved onto Sidekicks. We didn't get our first computer until the late 90s, probably like 98 or 99. I distinctly remember my older brother getting his ass whooped because he installed some porn malware on our computer called "UltimateAction". Everytime we loaded up the computer, that UltimateAction shit would start up by default. It was always a shitty GateWay computer with the black and white cow logo. I got a bullshit flip phone in 8th grade but my parents took it away because I ordered like $30 in ringtones kek didn't get another cellphone until I saved up money for a Sidekick Slide and eventually a Sidekick LX. If you had the BIRDMAN version of the LX you were the shit.

I really doubt most were old enough to remember it. Tapes were already basically dead in 2003 when a 26 year old would be born. By the time they were forming memories almost everything would be bought and played on DVD.

          1. Run that math again.
          2. Not every family immediately went out and bought a DVD player, just like not every family ditched their CRT when flatscreens became more popular. Even then early DVD players had VHS players built in because not every movie suddenly had a DVD available.

I was in university in 2001 and we made out like bandits buying VHS tapes from charity shops etc. because no one wanted them. Worked in Argos stockroom too and CRTs were on the way out. Goddamn I wish I’d snapped one up. Anyway, I’d say within a decade vhs was officially obsolete outside of wedding videos etc. so people might have been exposed to it that way, family gatherings/birthdays etc.

In any case: vhs effects are shit and don’t magically make things scary.

VHS collections are bulky, difficult to lug around for recycling and many hold sentimental value. It makes sense they would stick around for bored millenials to dust off and watch, particularly poorer ones with no access to the newest consoles or the internet during the early 2000s.

In the early to mid 2000s where I live they still did VHS tapes while DVDs just became a thing. VHS slowly faded over the course of that time as more people got DVD players (or a PS2 lol). So the oldest Zoomers would remember VHS, they'd be the last people who had them before DVD took over.
