Why are VHS effects the scariest thing a game can ever have and why are there so few big games doing it?

What do zoomers think about VHS distortions? Did you ever watch tapes growing up?
Yes, anon, 26 year olds have watched VHS tapes as kids.
>old enough to experience pre internet
Not a zoomer
>1997
>pre-internet
If you weren't on the internet in 1997 you were either a thirdie or a moron.
People had internet back then, but hardly anyone spent time on it for long durations since it was slow, and the internet would cut out if you got a phone call. Hardly anyone was using cell phones at that time too, so the 90s to the mid 00s may as well have been pre-internet. I'm 27 and my brother taught me about mapping dungeons with a pencil since looking up walkthroughs at that time wasn't the most convenient.
>90s to the mid 00s may as well have been pre-internet
That's not even slightly true. I've been using Gamefaq's since 1995 or so.
Let me guess, you weren't popular enough to get phone calls even back then?
>mid 00s
Bullshit. AOL chatrooms/YAHOO chatrooms were popular as frick in the 00s. Shit like Newgrounds, HabboHotel. MEEBO. The games on CartoonNetwork and Nickoldeon. You're clearly a zoomer that has no idea what the frick they're talking about. Same thing with cellphones. Everyone had Boosts with the bullshit chirp. And then everyone moved onto Sidekicks. You were an absolute homosexual if you didn't have one.
My parents were absolute cheapskates and wouldn't buy my siblings and I anything. I didn't get my first phone until I got my first job in high school.
We didn't get our first computer until the late 90s, probably like 98 or 99. I distinctly remember my older brother getting his ass whooped because he installed some porn malware on our computer called "UltimateAction". Everytime we loaded up the computer, that UltimateAction shit would start up by default. It was always a shitty GateWay computer with the black and white cow logo. I got a bullshit flip phone in 8th grade but my parents took it away because I ordered like $30 in ringtones kek didn't get another cellphone until I saved up money for a Sidekick Slide and eventually a Sidekick LX. If you had the BIRDMAN version of the LX you were the shit.
Lol people began getting ADSL in huge numbers around 2000. Also everyone had cellphones in 97 but I know the US lagged behind us in that respect
It was that early? I had to beg my parents to switch to Wi-Fi so that I could use the GTS. That was all the way to 2008, and I knew we were behind at least several years by then.
Yes, we knew immediately when someone at school got ADSL because they were gone for a week to play Counterstrike 1.0 (or what version it was) all day.
>mid 00s may as well have been pre-internet
stfu zoomer you're out of your element
>manually mapping out dungeon crawlers with a pencil and millimeter paper
call me casual but i'm glad those times are over
Dont the Etrian Odissey games make you do that shit?
People hated him for telling the truth but he's right
In actuality, the pre mainstream internet was before 2007 once YouTube and Smartphones hit the scene, but the golden era was 1997-2004
I was 5 yrs old in 1997, frick you boomer.
I got internet in 2007
I really doubt most were old enough to remember it. Tapes were already basically dead in 2003 when a 26 year old would be born. By the time they were forming memories almost everything would be bought and played on DVD.
>Tapes were already basically dead in 2003 when a 26 year old would be born
1. Run that math again.
2. Not every family immediately went out and bought a DVD player, just like not every family ditched their CRT when flatscreens became more popular. Even then early DVD players had VHS players built in because not every movie suddenly had a DVD available.
I grew up in a poor family and even we had switched to dvd's by 06.
I was in university in 2001 and we made out like bandits buying VHS tapes from charity shops etc. because no one wanted them. Worked in Argos stockroom too and CRTs were on the way out. Goddamn I wish I’d snapped one up. Anyway, I’d say within a decade vhs was officially obsolete outside of wedding videos etc. so people might have been exposed to it that way, family gatherings/birthdays etc.
In any case: vhs effects are shit and don’t magically make things scary.
>I was in university in 2001
Rural communities are always behind the curve when it comes to adapting the newest shiniest things from the big cities.
VHS collections are bulky, difficult to lug around for recycling and many hold sentimental value. It makes sense they would stick around for bored millenials to dust off and watch, particularly poorer ones with no access to the newest consoles or the internet during the early 2000s.
I'm 24 and vividly remember having a lot of movies on vhs when I was a kid.
>Tapes were already basically dead in 2003 when a 26 year old would be born
It's 2023. Try doing the math again
I live in Bongland and we still used VHS till around 2006 till I got a DVD player plus my granny kept using VHS all the way to 2008
We are slow to adapt.
i worked in barnardos a while and people were bringing in and buying VHS tapes right up to 2015, iirc
I'm 23 and watched the fricking Bionicle Mask of Light movie on VHS.
Man Bionicle movies were great
Nice math kek
I had the Bionicle movie on VHS, by the time the sequel came out we switched to DVD though
In the early to mid 2000s where I live they still did VHS tapes while DVDs just became a thing. VHS slowly faded over the course of that time as more people got DVD players (or a PS2 lol). So the oldest Zoomers would remember VHS, they'd be the last people who had them before DVD took over.
21 here, first cartoon i can remember watching was on tape, and my grandparents have a giant collection of movies and cartoons on VHS that i used to watch all the time as a kid on their TV with an integrared VHS player.
Shit was comfy. I can understand the jump from a sudden cut to static but i don't understand the bullshit with VHS being so scary among zoomers.
Don't know about 26 years old, but I'm 28 and I did see vhs tapes, mostly Disney shit.
I watched Veggie Tales and Thomas tapes all the time. Somehow Disney VHS's were hard to come by.
i'm 26 and i grew up with VHS tapes of old disney films and the three stooges
27 and I still have VHS Tapes. Shit I still have my Dad's copy of Escape from New York.
I'm 22 and had a huge box of cartoons and movies on VHS. Also lots of home movies.
It's sad to see that everybody in this thread missed your point entirely. The Internet really is overrun with zoomers.
yeah, 22, i have older siblings and really old parents though. my favorite by far was small soldiers.
You really, really, really need to stop acting like zoomers are fricking toddlers you literal pseudo-boomer.
My favorite one is when millennial psuedo-boomers blame zoomers for current games being shit when millennials are the demographic making videogames right now.
My favorite one is when fried brain zoomers use that moronic argument when even if the people working on games are millennials they're making what appeals to moronic little zooms zooms.
As a kid who grew up with VHS tapes, I've never seen distortions before they blew up in online horror. I can't tell if my parents were just extremely careful with the tapes or if I got lucky.
Cheap blank tapes had some distortion, but it's nothing like the effects use today.
I watched a lot of VHS disney films/looney tunes as a kid and I have never seen this meme VHS filter shit.
You had to have like a 3rd or 4th generation tape for it to be noticeably bad. The spooky VHS tape meme has been so overdone that if you showed people a tape recording in good condition they might not even know it.
I saw it more on recorded tapes. Espcially ones that were recorded over again and again. Or sometimes the vcr would eat the tapes and those crinkles would make blips and warbles
>OPEN THE DOOR MARK
>I HAVE A PRESENT
That still gives me the creeps
I hate zoomers.
It's been a thing since Ringu came out 25 years ago.
its funny because ringu was based on a light novel that first came out way back in the very early 90s. by the time we got the western adaptation it was now the early 2000s and people had DVD players.
And yet spooky static remains a horror trope despite everything being digital.
Low fidelity isn't scary, kiddo.
How do you get scared of fiction in the age when you can see videos of subhuman turd worlders doing unspeakable things to each other?
muh anal horror
Records are older, but they have stuck around in the mainstream consciousness, arguably harder than VHS despite
Not only that, but you can still buy vynils in stores. A friend of mine even ordered the Evangelion soundtrack on vynil not too long ago
YEEEEE
>that one game about an abandoned online fps using vhs filters
Genuinely embarrassing, horror devs should be culled
??? that makes no sense. concept sounded interesting how could they frick it up
The new meme is PS1 graphics
>Why are VHS effects the scariest thing
Because its from a technology that scares the current generation.
>Internet 'started' when masses started using it
lol
>Why are VHS effects the scariest thing a game can ever have
do zoomers really?
Reddit horror
It's just a 'new' big thing for nugen
People fall for bait so easily on Ganker
those eyes remind me of scout from tf2 for some reason.
What was his problem?
Who?
His? You mean HER problem
Or THEIR problem given that the painter is one of the two killers
I'm pretty sure both killers are male considering both engage in such violent and rape filled crimes
Besides most serial killers do tend to be male.
Last vid kinda confirmed a set of shoeless footprints was female
Did they go too far?
They took the bottom half off the sister and the top half off the brother then make a frick toy out of them?
Kino.
Isnt this the history where some child get raped or something? Its so funny that actuall horror scares normalhomosexuals so much they literally canceled the creator of the history.
Maybe you shouldn't use csa in your story? Especially if it was made for poor-taste Shock value. It's not scary or creepy, it's just disturbing
Do better
Here’s a (You) for this bait. It almost got me to reply in earnest.
I want some of these paintings they look wicked
I can't remember what YouTube channel made these vids, but I watched a few of the videos and got tired of how hardcore it's trying to be. I'm guessing that it's actually the killer who is making the videos, right?
Do you gays like any Analog Horror series?
I still think Local58 and Gemini Home Entertainment are pretty kino
But most Analog Horror today is pretty ass. I have no clue why people like Mandela Catalogue. It's a God damn meme series.
Vita Carnis for it's approach to lay out a threat in already researched manner and still be in hopelessness as the society is compromised by a cult worshipping these monsters
and somewhat of underdog juggernout vintage eight has whole series interconnected to one universe
I watch Urbanspook because I like serial killer stuff, but otherwise I haven't watch anything at all
I genuinely think Local 58 is among the worst, it just Looks better
The moon shit and the author's inability to finish anything has made it so it's cemented as far zhittier than Mandela despite the nicer effects
Vintage Eight is great. And there's plenty of good unfiction horror out there.
Urbanspook is probably the best current analog horror series around right now. since it's got some really striking and disturbing artwork and it's actually pretty fricked up. In the Walls was fricking shocking when I first watched it.
I just find it crazy doe they amount of backlash this series got from online kids. I mean the creator said over and over again if you can't handle shocking content then don't watch his shit. but for some reason everyone got mad at hime anyways.
It seems that people don't consider portrayals of pedophilia/rape as "shocking" but directly forbidden, so they didnt think anyone would do it
>Post commie shithole
>Always behind West so all fads start/end later
>PC dominant
GLORY days
this VHS craze is just the final evolution of earlier shit like the mario rom hack and jeff the killer
>need muh obscure creepy face
>holy moly lets add a vhs effect for authentic 90s horror aesthetic
>am genius
it's all going full circle
How you feeling this Friday lads?
Pretty Nage, occasionally I feel loric too.
A neverending sense of dorcelessness, little bit of harfam if I get dehydrated.
Humber
cause you are a stupid and braindead zoomer. That's a pleonasm,I know
Is there a big indie wave of doppleganger horror games like Amnesia got back in the day?
Resident Evil?
I don't really remember there being any dopplegangers in those games.
The only one I've played was a demo for this one where you work for an emergency hotline that deals with paranormal threats and dopplegangers will sometimes call up and try and trick you.
Oh you meant that kind of doppelgangers lol
I couldn't read your sentence very well so i tought you were talking about what games created a wave of clones like Amnesia did
WHAT THE FRICK IS THAT I'M GOING INSAAAAAAAAAAANE
I liked the Regular Show episode
boy wait until zoomies find out about DV tapes
Wtf
meddl
Do you guys ever feel like we died in a past life and for some reason we exist as we are now
No.
Yes.
Maybe.
I thought you like to complain about post-processing effects.
TOTAL ZOOMER GENOCIDE
>ps1 style graphics with a vhs filter
zoomers keep insisting they aren't ignorant about 90s technology, but this stupid shit is popular.
HOLY FRICK VHS EFFECTS ARE SO KEWWWWL
Is that AI?
nah
>analog horror where a virus starts making women grow bigger and bigger
ahahah imagine
watching urbanspook is like watching a mortal kombat fatality compilation video, the storytelling is super esl and the only thing it has going for it is visuals
Tbf it's literally an edgy ideas guy shilling his art both in and out of universe
The series exists purely so the author can flex his artistic skills
its a reminder of a time when video formats were utter shit.
Everybody knows true horror lies in 'le big creepy smile'
Goo goo gaga, VHS filter and photo shop image is SCARY XD.
I do actually wish more games incorporated a light film grain or distorted video look but horror games feel tired out, especially in the indie scene.
I forgot if the Skate games added it, but having a VHS camcorder filter for replays would be cool.
Anyone have the Neco-Intruder?
Reccommend me a creepypasta I could listen to
I listened to Tales from the Gas Station, Accounts from the lonely Broadcast station, The Showers, My girlfriend is behaving strangely, Godzilla NES and many more I do not remember now
