I always just figured he started out as sociopath and then over time changed into a carefully controlled cyberpsycho as he got more augmentations and desensitized to violence.
he didn't go cyberpsycho because he was already a sociopath that saw himself as a killing machine. He had no conflict about who he was and what his body was.
The game makes it clear the cyberpsychos are people who get augmented too much, don't have any emotional support, and start seeing themselves as merely a cog in the machine. Then they finally break and lash out at the world.
>don't have any emotional support, and start seeing themselves as merely a cog in the machine
isn't this normal?
Maybe in clown world.
it's the only world I know
and people ask me why I like videogames so much
Yes. "Cyberpsychosis" isn't fricking real. It's just pussies having a completely ordinary mental breakdown, except after they've had weapons bolted to their bodies, making them more dangerous. You can be a brain in a jar piloting a robot and you'll be fine as long as you're mentally strong and healthy.
good, not every villain needs a sad naruto backstory that explains their evil deeds, some people are just evil
>some people are just evil
literally no one is "just evil", literally every single person that does something anti-social (and that's what being evil is; you did a thing other people don't like) is that way because of how they were born, and what happened to them during their life, period.
Some people are just evil.
Yes, but likely due to brain damage
Ok but that doesn't make their actions and the results any less evil. They still maintain some kind of control.
Evil exists and your denial of someone who exists that enjoys inflicting suffering on other people is quite delusional.
>(and that's what being evil is; you did a thing other people don't like)
lol. lmao. are you a chick or just an r/atheism user?
It is okay for people to be Just Evil™ in stories, Anon
>tabula rasa
Antisocial personality disorder has been linked to genes, although it usually develops due to circumstances. Nonetheless, it could be that someone is born 'evil'.
>has been linked to genes
That is a well-known fact.
Some people just have the "evil gene". Hitler had it, Walt Disney had it, and Freddy Quimby has it, too.
explain israelites then
> explain israelites then
You’re very upset at your mediocre life and need someone to lash out at
>(and that's what being evil is; you did a thing other people don't like)
>Rapes and murders a baby
*Baby and everyone disliked that*
>He's just anti-social
Unfortunately yeah he’s still correct. If we’re all assuming that there’s no god and no universal commandments for humans then the only other explanation is that morality developed out of pack tactics and the understanding that humans are stronger as a collective. a human who acts wildly against the interests of the majority (anti socially) are to be avoided or excluded.
Literally everybody is evil. Haven't you read the Bible, man?
I agree that most people who commit murder were born with antisocial personality disorder and/or had a really shitty upbringing, but conmen and other people who thrive from taking advantage of others are just evil
That's cool, anon, but I don't give a frick about it when it's in my games.
Some people are born psychopaths or narcissists, which is explicitly what Adam Smasher is. Whether or not that's "evil" in the storybook sense is a different question. I'd argue that an ideologue who inflicts pain and suffering in service of a grand mission is more evil than someone who's bad obliviously or for wholly selfish reasons.
perfect
Guy is repulsed by flesh and hates organics.
Plus he is a well functioning cyberpsycho
I really want to get into blame and the other mangaka's works because the world art and mechanical designs look fricking cool, but I can't get past the constant horse faces, just keeps taking me out the scene.
Who would win?
>Guy who's able to throw cars around and punch holes in concrete walls but is otherwise still a human brain in an armor body
vs
>guy who has a gun that fires beams able to carve a 70km hole straight through scifi bullshit supermetal in a single blast and a superhuman level of aim to use said gun effectively against superspeed enemies
hmmmm
But does that apply outside of the city?
Yeah? The entire point of Blame! is that nobody controls The City anymore, he's as disconnected from it as anyone else.
It's not a fault of Adam Smasher, it's simply the fact that one setting has Cybernetics becoming the "new thing" and the other has reached the point that properly organic Humans are pretty much extinct and replaced by post-humans with strength, durability, and regenerative properties that make Senator Armstrong look like a chump.
>he's as disconnected from it as anyone else
not true actually, how else would he regenerate?
To add- it's simply a narrative power level difference, arguably the biggest power level gap possible.
Cyberpunk- "We have all these shiny new things, but what if we go too far with them?" Things are tough but there's still plenty of hope for the future if people work hard to fix things
>Blame!- "We already went WAY TOO FRICKING FAR, and things have gotten so far out of control people can't even properly comprehend it", completely and utterly hopeless except for one tiny spark that's been wandering lost for centuries and getting the shit kicked out of it constantly with no guarantee the plan will even work
Killy is practically immortal.
Killy vs Adam Smasher is the equivalent of asking who would win between Adam Smasher and a caveman. The tech levels involved are so far removed it's a silly question.
>Complete powerhouse
>Barely a man at this point
>Has no greater goal but to kill & do the bidding of it's overlord
Idk how to describe it but I really like this type of villain
they call them dirlewangers
description of a israelite golem
still perplexes me that this homie was the size of a super mutant behemoth, am intelligent super mutant behemoth in power armour. I know remakes can get a bad reputation but if I could ever choose one it'd be fallout 2. Top down view does not do frank horrigan justice.
They're a specific kind of force of nature villain that's a force of nature wielded by a larger villain
you love america?
rent free
>Nooo stop making jokes waahh waah
Every don should have a man like that. For old Vito it was Luca Brasi, and for Michael it was Al Neri.
And now he sleeps with the fishes.
My fave is Krell from Warhammer
Could he beat Adam Smasher?
Horrigan is a massive chump, AND made moronic by his mutation.
Nowhere near close.
Cyberpunk's augments are miles above Fallout's tech, and Horrigan is still mostly flesh.
It would be so close that the winner wouldn't be standing much longer afterwards. My money is on Horrigan simply because of how much bigger he is than Smasher but I wouldn't be surprised if Smasher had some weird piece of kit that would even the field
2077 Sandevistan + Panzerfaust my good sir
Adam zooms up to Frank at a smidge under Mach 11 (Dragoon Frame movespeed is 50mph, plus his Sandevistan’s minimum refraction rate of 1/100), and slaps him with what is essentially a lesser version of the Infinite Mass Punch from DC, which either kills Frank outright or deals stupendous damage. If it doesn’t work, Adam’s still capable of going 50mph on a dime, so GTFOing and allowing it to cycle again so he can reach Mach 10 isn’t exactly too difficult.

https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/TheDragon
He wasn't human. He was an orc or whatever they're called in Fallout.
There are trope names
>The Right Hand
>The Dragon
>The Muscle
so on and so on.
In the anime it's pretty obvious he is a stand-in for the grim reaper. I assume the game fricks that up somehow.
Grim Reaper? Kinda. He's also treated as the scifi equivalent of a "dragon" from D&D. At least that's the impression I got from the material.
More like the op demigod character that its out of your max level character
>op demigod
he gets beaten to death by a purple dildo
Wielded by the new big dick in town.
The game fricked up by having him as the final boss.
He's supposed to be the kind of encounter you can only hope to run from.
Unless you're running some dopey homebrew shit you're not killing him.
I get the infatuation of being able to do anything, fight everyone but sometimes there really should be encounters that are simply beyond you.
Or maybe V is just the new big dog in town, the start of a new generation of blackhands and smashers.
and instead, you beat him up with a dildo
not something you can do casually; you've got to make Vincent the absolute best in the world at smacking people with a dildo first.
V himself is dopey homebrew shit tbf, courtesy of the chip giving him massive cyberware tolerance according to Pondsmith
Not like it matters, thanks to the engram shit you can bring back anyone or just outright go 'lol lmao that wasn't the real adam smasher'
I highly doubt that Smasher is dead. They will prolly pull off "lol it was a shitty clone of him"
Doubt it. He's an old character. No reason not to retire him already and bring in something new. 2077 was filled with fanservice to begin with. Despite being set 50 years later it relies too much on CP2020 callbacks and identity. Despite chronologically ignoring RED.
Smasher already had remote controlled decoy bodies but in the final fight in the game he sounds genuinely fricked over and emotional that he's losing.
He may suffer from the sudden popularity he got from the show + game.
People want more of him and thats difficult for higher ups to pass, good marketing opportunity.
Mass production Smashers with Relic technology
Tabletop rules are moronic on purpose to avoid changing the status quo and keep people playing but the story of cyberpunk is supposed to end. Don't care about tabletop lore, it would be moronic if you encounter this big boss character and never get to beat him in the game
>Do you think this might be the result of some deep seeded past trauma or tragic backstory?
>Yup.

not gonna watch. getting sick of youtube essay slob
I mean, he does have a background and always did before the game. He was a small-time ganger punk/Army washout, started building a name as someone who wouldn't get squeamish no matter the job, got more and more augs, developed a one-sided rivalry with the top known Solo, Morgan Blackhand, they had an inconclusive duel before the nuke went off, Arasaka scraped what was left of him off the pavement and got him even more metal.
It's not a sob story but he did feel belittled when Morgan ignored him in pretty much every encounter before their duel.
You left out the part where he got exploded into chunky salsa and Arasaka put him back together Robocop style.
you left out the part where you read the post you're replying to
That happened before the nuke. He got a job to hit Arasaka. He got RPG'd and Arasaka put him together and then contracted him for work. That's why he was at the Arasaka HQ tower.
He was already a machine when the duel at Arasaka HQ went down. (IIRC he was in a DaiOni in the lorebooks)
Some people also like the feeling of power they have over them while ending their life
So who commands him, and why does he do their bidding?
>who commands him
Arasaka.
>why does he do their bidding?
They let him play with the most advanced combat cyberware on the planet and cause as much collateral damage as he wants with no repercussions.
Also job pays really well, he's fricking rich.
Yeah, that's pretty cool then
I'd like to see the personality of the person who commands him though, why would he even respect them I wonder
>I'd like to see the personality of the person who commands him though
That's pretty cool, but maybe a shame he's not a flesh and blood person. It would be cool if he is commanded by a flesh and blood man who has sheer force of personality, but both are ultimately afraid of what the other can do, so there is a working relationship
Yes I think a killswitch would be the key bit of leverage over him.
I like the "masked enforcer" archetype
Saburo only dies during the game, before that he was alive running Arasaka for like a century.
IDK if that's ever explicitly stated anywhere, but I've only played the game so probably missing a lot of info. Probably fair to assume they have a killswitch (or several) that gives them the ability to incapacitate him or just disable his cybernetics.
The thing is, he's ironically probably one of the most loyal "people" in Arisaka. He's already achieved his goal, so he's not interested in backstabbing to climb the ladder, all he wants is to blow shit up and be a big robot homie.
Imagine the boomer grilling meme.
>Engrams? Office politics? For god's sake, I just wanna KILL
i think it's mostly a mutually beneficial agreement. Arasaka gets a super bodyguard and smasher gets top of the line augments and can go on rampages and be protected from any legal repercussions.
even psychopaths understand the value of agreement
Arasaka commands him and he does their bidding because he just want to be a killing machine that kills motherfrickers and thats what arasaka gives him, gives him killing machine toys and points motherfrickers to kill.
Adam Smasher has a Master's degree in business management, he just doesn't get the chance to mention it very often
He also bakes, but he keeps his professional and personal life separate. There's actually cut dialogue where Johnny elaborates on his rivalry with Smasher.
They weren't enemies until Johnny insulted a batch of his chocolate pecan clusters, then it was on-sight.
Johnny can't even remember the arasaka tower raid right, I wouldn't trust his words on Smasher
The most important night of your life pales in comparison to a mouth-watering batch of Smasher's own Cinnamon & Chocolate Souffle
Johnny is also the amalgam of a dodgy brainscan on and prototype chip and some dead merc.
I actually wrote the post you're referencing that theorized that Johnny's engram is a composite of himself and Morgan Blackhand.
Word of God says Blackhand is still alive, so I can at least die knowing I wrote something cooler than Mike Pondsmith.
What post? I'm referencing that hellman guy who ingame says that from the second you woke up after being shot neither V or Johnny are separate beings or the same people/minds they were
Ah my bad, you meant V as the merc.
I thought it made more sense for Johnny's engram to be a mix of his own and Morgan Blackhand's because his in-game backstory and appearance are already a mixture of the two.
His appearance is closer to Morgan's, his rivalry with Smasher, his role in the attack on the tower, planting the nuke, etc. Those are all things that Morgan Blackhand did, and he hadn't been seen since the attack on the tower, so it stood to reason that the Johnny on the relic was actually an experiment by Arasaka to see if they could modify an engram by stitching together two incomplete engrams.
Johnny was cut in half by Smasher, so he was probably dead for a while before being soulkillered, which means his brain would've already started to decay.
Then, when they were done figuring out how to frick with engrams, they threw him on a hard-drive and let him rot in Mikoshi until Yorinobu snuck him out.
Of course none of that matters, since Blackhand is Pondsmith's special little man, and he's invincible.
>They weren't enemies until Johnny insulted a batch of his chocolate pecan clusters, then it was on-sight.
Anons is he a good baker?
>merc with seventy years of experience
>ex marine that fought in central america
>underling talks shit without knowing better
Ironically Smasher is possibly the most overqualified security manager you might have working at Arasaka
>I CAN DO BETTER
Corpos eats and shit guys like this everyday
Isn't Adam Smasher like a 70 year vet both in the military and as a mercenary? The dude couldn't be more qualified.
If you go by the fact that he looks right at you and the threat scanner lights up in the konpeki penthouse that he knew you and jackie broke in and didn't say shit about it, then nah, he's not the most qualified. He's too interested in just being a murder beast to do his job.
He's more suited as a grunt that just takes orders, what the frick is he doing in a managerial position...?
I disagree. it's true that inflation happened but these devs and editors ar ecoping. The main reason is their games ar enot good enough. They re biased and do not want to admit it though. They fre free to do whatever they want though. People will decide ultimately if they want to buy their game or not.
Kinda funny that they have to shill and astroturf kids instead of letting the market talk though. ~~*capitalism*~~ in a nutshell
>Moralgay can't comprehend such thing
why even keep the flesh at that point
The "flesh" is not even real.
He was forced to put that on because people couldn't tell if he was a cyborg or just a robot so he did it in the most "frick you" way possible by just slapping a piece of skin-colored synthetic meat onto his head.
The only bits of him that remain are his brain and spinal cord.
You know for a combat borg, he does have a whole lot of loose wires.
my thought exactly
Just so you know exactly who’s killing you.
It’s not some random faceless Dragoon that just Sandy’d up into your face and liquefied you with a Panzerfaust boosted flick of his pinky finger, it was Adam fricking Smasher himself, and you’d better tell that c**t Blackhand that he said hello on your way down to hell.
wow i wish i was him
His actual backstory doesn't help much, but it's something, and it does match lore. He is supposed to be a high functioning psycho that had already lived as a schitzo soldier before the full body implants. He's not the worst at being an empty villian. Shit like totk ganondorf is far worse.
Indeed he is the best they have its like the jonh wick of arasaka
he just like me fr fr
When I finished him off, I did it with Rebecca's shotgun.
Game over, frickhead.
Wow so brave did you dilate after that?
He was always a cyberpsycho that's why he can take so many implants
At this point, Smasher is more like a bioware implant to a cybernetic body than the other way around.
>setting has hard limit on using special, unique thing that improves your powers
>some guy can just do whatever because he's craaaAAAaaazy
Never liked it.
>guy is immune to tech that makes you crazy because he was already the biggest psycho on the planet
Not that complicated. The genre is all about poetic nonsense like that.
>some guy can just do whatever
The entirety of MaxTac are cyberpsychos and they're all as (semi) conscious as Smasher.
From the moment I understood the weakness of my flesh, it disgusted me. I craved the strength and certainty of steel. I aspired to the purity of the blessed machine.
Your kind cling to your flesh as if it will not decay and fail you. One day the crude biomass you call a temple will wither and you will beg my kind to save you.
But I am already saved. For the Machine is Immortal.
And that's why he's top tier. In an age of these fricking ridiculously boring villains who always have to have some writer's gay attempt at pushing their left-leaning morality, Adam Smasher was made back in a time where the villain was just a cool, badass motherfricker who killed people because he simply liked killing people.
could Murphy take him?
Smasher is basically Cain+slowing down time
No
He's a psychopath. Even before he went full borg.
>conveniently leaves out the part that the guy is borderline cyber-psycho
>Cyberpsychosis symptoms are gradual, ranging from decay of self-preservation, distancing or disregard from friends and family, and poor or impulsive outbursts or acts. They start to identify more with machines than people, and stop doing things that used to give them pleasure (eating, sleeping, socializing, sex, etc). Eventually human interactions become irritating, and this morphs into contempt, and finally violence.
>fourth playthrough since release
>make my hacker stealth sniper again for the 2.0 update and PL
>play on Very Hard
>the game actually is Very Hard at points, especially PL boss battles
>max out character, gain super weapons from PL
>do everything else in the game
>finished with it now, time to slap Smasher around and put the game down
>motherfricker Sandevistans around the arena
>melts my health in 3 hits
>has distinct phases that shift his attack patterns
>highly resistant to my hacks
>is a b***h to hit effectively with my guns
>keeps KOing my backup
>can follow me anywhere in the arena
Holy shit they weren't joking when they said they reworked him. Look me at least 20 tries.
His build changes to counter yours.
wait it does? i thought they just gave him a sandy and new moves
I think his AI is more responsive now, not that they change his build.
Adam was fun, he was just used so badly. He's badly written character ending fodder in Edgerunners and in Cyberpunk by the time you actually face him you have done so much more stuff than him and are so much cooler there's no point.
I still don't know why he wasn't the one to fatally injure Jackie, he hit the car and everything
>Why are you evil?
You can drop any game or conversation whenever someone asks that reddit question.
>bro Adam smasher was fixed in the update now he’s actually hard
>I fight him on very hard and use berserk and hit him a bunch of times with a blunt weapon
>he jobs and dies on my first try
they lied he’s still piss easy
could l-drago take him?
why does the CEO and President of Militech and the NUSA have a personal japanese gun?
Militech sucks and the Kyubi is the one gun that makes the God awful shooting somewhat tolerable.
Also, I'm pretty sure it's meant to be a high end civilian Ajax, so you could say the core design is Militech still.
Orion should be a Deus Ex game. The open world does nothing for 2077 other than feature some side gigs. A linear approach would suit their story telling, gameplay and level design much better too. Plus they probably can let NC rest for longer before returning to it with the third game where they feature all the stuff they should have done the first time around.
It's a nature thing, despite everything we are still animals and some animals kill for shits and giggles. Like dudebros picking on someone, if it wasn't for the consequences you think they wouldn't kill? Look at gangsters they don't give a frick, they will dispose of rivals without mercy.
