yeah, I could get it with stuff like DarkSpore and other always online games/stuff with uncracked DRM, but you can easily pirate SpecOps, there's even a bunch of keys on grey market sites if you really want to have it on Steam for some weird reason

I was once in the former camp because I had a way better and smarter interpretation of the story than what the developers intended. I used to mock everyone who hated the game because of the moronic takes they had on it, until I read a bunch of interviews with the devs and realized that those retsrded takes are actually EXACTLY what the developers were trying to convey, with the "you're le bad person" and "muh glorification of violence" homosexualry.
I thought it was just a self-contained story about a well meaning soldier using good intentions to pave the road to a hell of his own making as we watch and wince at every step on his descent into the abyss. But no, it turns out I'm just a bad person because I wanted to play a videogame. What a fricking farce.

It’s a rare example where death of the author should be applied.
A modern heart of darkness isn’t exactly groundbreaking but it’s still interesting, and doesn’t deserve to be dragged down by a pretentious gay b***hing about the fact most people aren’t moronic enough to think video game violence impacts reality in the slightest.

          >It’s a rare example where death of the author should be applied.
Death of the author always applies because no piece of media is written isolated from the rest of the media landscape. The game remixes a lot of ideas from movies like Apocalypse Now and Fight Club, and so it necessarily it deals with themes that the authors didn't even thought about. Then again, I think the TLOU and MGS games did it better.

Then again, the game is somewhat explicit about the developers' intentions part-way through, when the loading screen tips start saying things like "You're not a bad person".
I mostly played the game just to see what kind of path of madness the character was going to take.

Spec Ops is a bit like the “Would you kindly” bit from Bioshock, where if you the player do what the devs expect you to do, the trick works beautifully, but if you the player try to NOT do what the devs expect you to do, the fact that you really don’t have any choice in the matter due to the nature of video games kind of breaks the whole trick.

The devs are counting on you to do what the game’s objectives tell you to do without thinking, because it’s a video game, and then lord that over you. But if you do think, if you ever try to find alternate solutions, the fact that they don’t actually exist (because it’s a video game) cheapens the moral lecture the game then throws at you.

Most people who played Bioshock probably did not try to deliberately ignore Fontaine’s instructions. But a lot of people tried not to use the white phosphorous in Spec Ops.

You were so close to getting it and fricked it up right at the last step. It’s a parallel narrative where you are meant to self insert as walker and experience the story unironically only to have your perspective split part way through when the story estranges you from the protag. You are meant to carry the split perspective throughout the rest of the story and the interplay between the similarities and differences between you and walker are what makes the story highly engaging

I know this is bait but,
It's an extremely poorly made, heavily rushed, bare bones game that directly calls the player a bad person for even playing it and acts like it and the devs are simply better than you. It's a game that is so poorly written they had to REMOVE any morally good choices the player could make so that their dumbass point would work. They did this because testers for the game weren't making completely unreasonable choices with no motivation for someone to ever do, leading to the devs looking stupid. So now it's a game that forces you to kill a ton of civilians while claiming you have a choice not to (as the choice was cut) then breaks the 4th wall and directly calls you, the player, a bad person for progressing through the game.

The devs have said that if you weren't a bad person, and if video games didn't make people violent, then you would have simply turned the game off but also not ask for a refund. You would just pay full price then not play it once you realized killing people is bad, but you didn't do that did you? Guess you're just a pyschopath who only cares about killing innocents and you WANT the United States military to invade foreign countries!

Reviewers criticized the game for sucking really bad, especially the barely functional multiplayer (a mode that glorifies killing people for fun, awesome!) but praised the games writing; all of them basically completely misunderstanding anything the game was saying, which has lead to a ton of people parroting that it's so deep and awesome and definitely doesn't have the message the devs have directly stated it to have!

It's a very well made, almost manipulative game, but if you get into it, it's practically inducing PTSD on yourself. It's very effective on showing how well meaning people can become outright mass murdering war criminals while having the very best of intentions.
I'm starting to feel like this game is one of the many things that people born after 9/11 just simply can't understand.

        >buy game
        >refuse to commit war crimes
        >money stolen

        >The game is midwit bait trash
That's because everyone knows that these wars are garbage now. At the time of its release, it was revolutionary because it was the only game to criticize the military from a western perspective. Other games straight up sucked the dick of the American military with zero self-awareness.

        >the only game to criticize the military from a western perspective. Other games straight up sucked the dick of the American military with zero self-awareness.

The original Modern Warfare is probably the most popular FPS of it's generation, and the story is about US foreign interventionism going horribly wrong and fricking things up, and the ending for the American character is having a nuke go off in your face and you crawling around dying of exposure for your last moments.
It's more subtle about it than Spec Ops, and you don't commit war crimes, but it's a very anti-interventionist game. (The new one is the exact opposite but that's a different discussion.)

Because its obvious that it was taken down because the US is prepping for another infinite desert occupation, so criticisms of that need to be removed. The game itself is whatever, its the fact that its not a wholly positive depiction of shooting sandBlack folk and russians that is the problem, and for that it was removed.

Having been in the military since one year after CoD4 dropped, this is moronic schizo babble. CoD is not a part of the military’s recruiting efforts. Hell, back when CoD4 released, the government was still running America’s Army on PC, which was their actual recruitment video game.
            >but muh advisors
Yeah, people exist that get paid to tell video game developers and movie studios if their military stories are military enough, but they are independent contractors. If there was an actual official DoD connection to Activision, it would have been well known by now.

Especially given the game features white phosphorous, something their ~~*greatest ally*~~ has been using lately.

On one hand yes on the other hand the "military industrial complex" is not a shadowy Masonic cult but regular corporations staffed with minorities and make-work bullshit. Even the greater intelligence and broader government-backed NGO space has "project manager" style organization. People have been saying there will be a draft since the first Gulf War and it hasn't happened yet. And it won't happen, unless WWIII kicks off. Americans are fine with their tax money paying to blow up brown people, but the minute it disrupts their comfortable lives or steals their kids and sends them off to die, there will be a boomer uprising.

Almost every single video game is midwit trash compared to classic literature. Huffing your own farts, and jerking off to Gravity's Rainbow and Kant doesn't make someone an intellectual. It's the most midwit take on earth to suggest that every work must serve a higher purpose, and that any work that is a lesser form of another isn't worthy of existence. Even the Library of Alexandria contained works that served no purpose other than entertainment. The problem lies solely in the destruction of cultural works, it is treating creative works like commodity. That game has significance in the medium not because it is smart, or even a good game. It's significance lies only in the fact it was doing something different in a genre where everything was the same.

Will this be the case decades from now? You can name some huge games from the 80s and 90s to younger people and they will have no clue what you are talking about.

If there is no one who remembers something, and the only method of obtaining it is piracy it is inevitable that it will eventually become lost media unless something changes or serious preservation efforts are taken. Since there will eventually come a time where there is no demand, and thus remaining copies of the original will become more scarce.

Fricking morons, it's a turd person shooter with an on rails campaign like everything else from that era. They actually managed to do something interesting with it which has given the game more longevity than every other forgettable contemporary. Barely anyone will remember shit like the terrible medal of honor reboot. People will remember that game that makes you white phosphorous civilians will you have a schizo meltdown and the game starts turning into a fever dream with psychological horror elements.

Anon, unless you're mentally moronic with an IQ of 25, you can differentiate real war from a video game. You sound like those troons on twatter who compare real life child porn with e-girl art. One is real, the other isn't
The game, and the devs by proxy, have too far up their own ass that they're trying to sound fricking deep but come off as moronic

the reason why usa lost is because there were talks about invasion but that didnt happen since china could step in so the capital gets bombed galore and north vietnam talks a treaty telling usa to stop bombing and leave and they wont invade the south

The game doesn't prove shit. Every homosexual circlejerks the idea that (you) are the one who chooses if you want to be a bad guy or a good guy. Yet they never bring up how the focal point of the game doesn't give you any options. It's so pretentious that I'm baffled I used to suck its dick and praise it for how groundbreaking it was.

What do you mean you didn't have a choice at white phosphorus? you could've just turned the game off
It's the EXACT same scenario after finishing a pacifist run in Undertale, you can choose to go for a genocide run and kill everyone or leave the game alone and let all the cartoon animals live in peace
I bet you're one of those midwits who think humans don't have free will

In one you've already played through the game, while having had the option for genocide since the start.
In the other you're nowhere close to done and the only choice is to have wasted the game's price tag on a subpar experience that ends abruptly or to go with the obviously bad choice with predictable outcomes.

I just wish the game had better gameplay. It's your average cover shooter (especially on FUBAR difficulty, frick that was tedious to clear), but the setting and seeing how shit devolves over time was the driving factor, despite the poor illusion of choice.
