Literature isn't even that deep. At least from what I read, it's all the same topics, the most complicated aspect is how it's portrayed, like with poetry. It's still about love, lost, honor, nature, etc etc, but it's presentation is what's different.
And that's why a lot of games being deep sucks. They're not really exploring a theme that's universal to us, they just "explore" aka become a glorified wikipedia article, like in Human Revolution. It's shallow in game and is just a glossing over the topic.
A game that did explore the themes and has a philosophical bent to it is Geneforge, and it does it by having a simple question (if humans made magical humans, what should their relationship be like) and explore it. We see the magic humans civilization, how they thrive, how they see their creators, etc etc. A farmer provides insight, as a ruler does in that game on how it works. In addition this isn't just something that's just window dressing, it's a core part of the game, which furthers my engagement on it.

theres a grapple mechanic which is basically useless because most enemies past the first third of the game are immune to it, it also fricks up the controls because circle is now for pick up weapons which is another useless mechanic and R1 is grab/grapple
most enemies are either armored or block all your attacks so you're forced to play way more defensively than any other god of war game, constantly blocking and rolling around and trying to get a few hits in here and there. The parry is now L1+X instead of just being L1 and that fricks everything up
the weapons are just 4 different elemental types of blades that aren't really different from each other
a lot of finishers are now this stupid minigame shit that you have to dodge and button mash with even when you're surrounded by enemies I guess they just wait for you two to have it out
puzzles that just leave you wondering what the frick you're doing and where you're going what does this even do why am I doing this, whats the objective

The writing in OG GOW is fantastic and it delivers exactly what it tries to deliver. A literal classic Greek tragedy which's thematic is the consequences of hubris. OG Kratos is an amazing character, but not for the shit manchild reasons you idolize. Kratos was always a tragic, self destructive character and the games never made any efforts to make him relatable to the audience unless you are violent manchild with anger issues and a tendency to hold a grudge.
Boys love violence, Men love nuance. Kratos in both OG and NU GOW is incredibly nuanced and he is well written i n both series. NU GOW is the logical continuation of his character arc. OG Kratos started as a famous and competent warrior at the prime of his career with a country to defend, a famliy to return to and loyal comrades to return to, then he lost everything and then some more, then he lost even more by sabotaging himself, then hit the bottom of the barrel only to rise again.
It's the very definition of the classic hero's journey mixed with parenthood and a lesson in personal ownership and responsibility. It humanizes Kratos as someone who, despite a God who had lived several human lifetimes, could still learn and make mistakes and have doubt.

the first obvious thing to say is that neither Kratos nor Dadkratos are in any way stoics. The second thing is that a truly stoic character would be extremely boring to follow. The closest character that comes to mind is Kiryu in Yakuza and the character works precisely because the veneer of emotional control and calm breaks down at key moments: he very often makes bad decisions based on emotional attachements and breaks down in the face of dramatic events.
Zoomers aren't afraid of stoic characters, it's just that every writer on the planet (including the abysmal ones who dwell in the videogame industry) know that compelling characters act on emotions. Harry Du Bois in Disco Elysium is a compelling character to follow not because he is a fricked-up alcoholic looser but because he failed to cope with his lover leaving him, leading him to a string of bad decisions he made because of this break-up. We piece together Harry's bio and we see something we can all relate to: badly reacting to a heartbreak and making the wrong choices in life because our emotions got the better of us. A Stoic Harry would just be a boring, single, cop. Hell even Kim shows to be more than a typical no-nonsense nerd if you scratch. And the Za/um guys, as talented as they were didn't tap into some bespoke writing talent. Anybody with an once of writing skill, media literacy or just basic social skill you're probably lacking in any of those hence your garbage post knows that showing emotion is actually the winning move for people to actually care about you.

He acts more coldly that's true. But even his coldness can be seen as an attempt to reign-in emotions, he never actually overcomes them seemingly.
My reading is that him being distant and uncaring with boi isn't actually a lack of emotion but the outward facing reaction of a man terrified and confused by fatherhood.
An actual "Stoic" (I doubt such a man could exist IRL or be written and not immediately cut in fiction) would not seem that callous towards his son, in fact I'm half sure such a man could maintain an erection let alone a romantic infatuation long enough to reproduce.
While I think the modern GoW games are shit, I don't think they are so because of the narrative choices.

A game that did explore the themes and has a philosophical bent to it is Geneforge, and it does it by having a simple question (if humans made magical humans, what should their relationship be like) and explore it. We see the magic humans civilization, how they thrive, how they see their creators, etc etc. A farmer provides insight, as a ruler does in that game on how it works. In addition this isn't just something that's just window dressing, it's a core part of the game, which furthers my engagement on it.

combos are tied to a rage meter so you're stuck doing 2-3 hits until you build it up, and if you get hit once it depletes the meter
theres a grapple mechanic which is basically useless because most enemies past the first third of the game are immune to it, it also fricks up the controls because circle is now for pick up weapons which is another useless mechanic and R1 is grab/grapple
most enemies are either armored or block all your attacks so you're forced to play way more defensively than any other god of war game, constantly blocking and rolling around and trying to get a few hits in here and there. The parry is now L1+X instead of just being L1 and that fricks everything up
the weapons are just 4 different elemental types of blades that aren't really different from each other
a lot of finishers are now this stupid minigame shit that you have to dodge and button mash with even when you're surrounded by enemies I guess they just wait for you two to have it out

The writing in OG GOW is fantastic and it delivers exactly what it tries to deliver. A literal classic Greek tragedy which's thematic is the consequences of hubris. OG Kratos is an amazing character, but not for the shit manchild reasons you idolize. Kratos was always a tragic, self destructive character and the games never made any efforts to make him relatable to the audience unless you are violent manchild with anger issues and a tendency to hold a grudge.
Boys love violence, Men love nuance. Kratos in both OG and NU GOW is incredibly nuanced and he is well written i n both series. NU GOW is the logical continuation of his character arc. OG Kratos started as a famous and competent warrior at the prime of his career with a country to defend, a famliy to return to and loyal comrades to return to, then he lost everything and then some more, then he lost even more by sabotaging himself, then hit the bottom of the barrel only to rise again.
It's the very definition of the classic hero's journey mixed with parenthood and a lesson in personal ownership and responsibility. It humanizes Kratos as someone who, despite a God who had lived several human lifetimes, could still learn and make mistakes and have doubt.

the first obvious thing to say is that neither Kratos nor Dadkratos are in any way stoics. The second thing is that a truly stoic character would be extremely boring to follow. The closest character that comes to mind is Kiryu in Yakuza and the character works precisely because the veneer of emotional control and calm breaks down at key moments: he very often makes bad decisions based on emotional attachements and breaks down in the face of dramatic events.
Zoomers aren't afraid of stoic characters, it's just that every writer on the planet (including the abysmal ones who dwell in the videogame industry) know that compelling characters act on emotions. Harry Du Bois in Disco Elysium is a compelling character to follow not because he is a fricked-up alcoholic looser but because he failed to cope with his lover leaving him, leading him to a string of bad decisions he made because of this break-up. We piece together Harry's bio and we see something we can all relate to: badly reacting to a heartbreak and making the wrong choices in life because our emotions got the better of us. A Stoic Harry would just be a boring, single, cop. Hell even Kim shows to be more than a typical no-nonsense nerd if you scratch. And the Za/um guys, as talented as they were didn't tap into some bespoke writing talent. Anybody with an once of writing skill, media literacy or just basic social skill you're probably lacking in any of those hence your garbage post knows that showing emotion is actually the winning move for people to actually care about you.
