I have a great idea for an RTS but will only share it if given millions of dollars to make it.
So your answer is because nobody's been able to knock Starcraft or Warcraft or DOTA off their thrones

during xbox/xbox360 era microsoft was strong arming pc devs to make shit for xbox, as a result any genre that could only work on pc either died or got dumbed down. the industry never really recovered from this so as time went on and audiences grew those audiences naturally reject rts, since they grew up treating games as something you dont use your brain for. The idea of having to strategize and also not being able to blame your teammates became increasingly unpopular as the audience for gaming grew larger and larger

This is actually the best answer. Same thing happened to FPS gaming, community servers and complex team based gameplay was replaced by gay matchmaking and “duos” because of console limitations.

Zoomers brains are too fricked up to be good at them and developers only think they are going to make money if they have the zoomer crowd.

Too much investment and tension for little dopamine.

I played a lot in my youth but i'm in favour of turn based nowadays just because you have more control over the pace of the game.

I'm 32. I don't spend my free time replaying C&C, AoE, AoM, or any-craft game.

They are boring. I enjoyed them back then because I had a lot of free time and not that many games. Nowadays I have the RTS steam filter set to EXCLUDE.

StarCraft 2 killed rts as a genre. It's not fun, but it's the only thing people want to clone

I want to live in a timeline where DoW3 was just a prettier mix of DoW1 and 2, or frick I don't care if it just was a straight up remake of 1 or 2. Instead I'm stuck in this shit timeline where the devs royally fricked up and chases MOBA money and tanked the company making things nobody asked for or wanted.

RTSs added hero units. Players care more about developing hero units over RTS gameplay. RTS gets modded out of its own genre.
