Actually a pretty good question. With the development of vidya technology over time, you'd think that somebody would try to do something different in the MMO industry. When's the last time one's even come out? The only one I can think of in recent times that's been so much as mentioned is the Dune MMO.

What makes MMOs good is the sociability features, but this isn't the 2000s anymore where anonymity was the norm, social media sites and apps aren't popular, and a lot people still want to socialize. Now everyone is either on solo(zero interaction), their own discord, busy on their own social media(Twitter, Tiktok, etc.). It killed MMOs on what makes it special, so that's why there is no good MMOs.

Because with the advancement of social media, and the further growth of the normie side of the internet, it's just not the same.
Before 2007, it was mostly teenage or twenty something white guys hanging out online, but after the launch of the Iphone, the development of cheap home computers, and the development of easier internet access by a decent chunk of the average population, the internet got flooded with normies that have done nothing but dumb it down, shut it down, or pushed out the people that were here before them.

I grew up watching my friends be consumed by that garbage. I got a WoW demo disc with Warcraft 3 and I thought it sucked. Its sad knowing that it killed a great RTS series.

The demo I played was enough for me. I would have preferred Warcraft 4 instead.
The problem is WoW, such a shitty game got so much commercial success that every other studio made even shittier copies of them and killed the genre when people realized that wow gameplay is just boring garbage.

because MMOs are shaped by the players and devs, and right now, both are rotten to the core
