I will probably do another campaign when I get home, I wish there were more decent custom campaigns that aren’t gimmicky as frick. I just wanna play more standard AOE 2 campaigns.
I was pissed when return of rome wasn’t aoe 1 campaigns made in aoe 2 and was instead just straight up ported aoe 1
it's like 5 bucks on any site selling steam keys, but it's not like the game is expensive on steam either >I have bad APM
there are bunch of tricks to make you need to use less APM like 'Select All ... buildings" hotkeys
also the single player has a neat pause function where you can still give orders while the game is being paused, so you can pretty much play the campaigns as a semi-turn based game and not care about APM at all
I'm finally slowly working my way through the campaigns even though I've owned the game since it came out on PC. even after all this time, I still suck at the game and would get destroyed in online
AoE2 felt like a uniquely stressful game to play 20+ years ago when the dogshit internet back then meant you only really thought about your eco and just patrolled your units into combat. Now you've got kids who can micro their archers like the AI it's even worse.
multiplayer used to have a lot of latency back then, it's a lot easier to micro shit now, also there are some QoL features to make micro/macro less burdensome
I hit 700 hours recently.
Currently: >Learned Armenians really fast, won a few with Georgians, getting my ass kicked as new persians >Trying to go full random more instead of running specialized civ picking strats, it's going poorly >Trying to beat the 5th mission in return of rome's Trajan campaign. I'm convinced it's impossible.
Learning all these gay ass keybinds to play even a little efficiently is really unfun.
That and I can only play a little at a time because RTSs exhaust me mentally.
I don't want to be a shitter who has to click the different build buttons on the ui when I select a villager, or to manually click my dock and scroll to page two and then click build on the specific units, then i could press the dock key, then the specific unit key.
he's saying use the keyboard layout hotkeys. where the position of the button corresponds to a specific key. so as long as you know where your keyboard keys are, you can at least glance at the buttons and realize which one is 'A' or which is 'X'. slowly you'll get used to it
>Want to use this layout because I appreciate how universal this would be across factions/games and it would mean I wouldn't have to click on far away keys like P >Doing so however would probably mean getting rid of A click which is universally regarding for attack move across all RTS games
Not sure if it's worth the trade off
so however would probably mean getting rid of A click which is universally regarding for attack move across all RTS games
you can use the grid layout for building and unit production, while still using 'A' for Attack move command when the units are selected
>Learning all these gay ass keybinds to play even a little efficiently is really unfun
you are probably doing something wrong
here is how you learn it pretty easily
by default put your 4 fingers on QWER, then learn to move each of them down blindly to ASDF and ZXCV
If you've got this simple movement on this grid memorized then you should be able to just look at the grid icons (icons of buildings to build or units/upgrades to produce) and you should be able to hit for example the "second icon in the second row" by moving your second finger to the second row (S). You can just play like this until you naturally memorize where each icon's placement is and you won't even need to look at the icons.
Also, I've put "Select All TCs/Barracks/ArcheryR and Stables/Castles/SiegeWS hotkeys to TGB,YHN rows. You can learn to blindly hit these keys by just memorizing that they are one key right to RFV, and when you've got that then one key right to TGB
You also move up to 234 keys from WER. You hhit 1 with your ring finger instead your pinky, but a tip is to start your control gropus with 2 instead of 1, it's easier to hit 2. Another tip is to have a default setup of which control groups have which units, for example by default I always put infantry, archers, cavalry into 2,3,4.
another recommendation is to download Autohotkey and switch the Ctrl key with Space and the Shift key with Tab. Ideally you should be using the default ctrl and shift functions a lot, but it's FAR easier to just hit space or tab. I would recommend switching to these keys even if you already have some experience in using Ctrl to create control groups. After a tiny bit of practice you will feel a massive improvement in fluidity of your controls.
This might seem like a lot of text but it's really like an hour worth of practice to get the jist of this, and it will greatly improve your gameplay not just in AoE2 but in most RTS games
also change Attack Move to Q as you will be hitting it a lot, and Back to work/ungarrison to R/F. Put any command that you think you will need to use a lot to easily accessible places.
>and will always be
why
if I pick an infantry civ I do it because I wanna make infantry as my main force, not just to occasionally counter eagles and shit
because AI skirmishes get boring and I get curbstomped in every match online
> AI skirmishes
why don't you just play Campaigns, there are like 40 of them

Because I'm playing Fallout 4 and spending most of my time WAITING FOR FRICKING EXTERIORS TO LOAD
There's a mod to max fps on load screens
Also make sure you're using the winter wonderland retexture 😀
>winter wonderland retexture 😀
Maybe next month. I just gave Valentine to Silver Shroud costume dawg
I have been. Just replayed Vinlandsaga last night.
t. Alberto Barbosa
Because my new PC died after 2 days of use
my quadannual obsession with the game ended last summer and i'm not going to invest hundreds of hours to stop being a pushover in multiplayer
It's not on sale
I have bad APM
The last time I played RTS online was decades ago during WC3 times

I will play your game later. Seems like it will always be alive.
Because I suck. Even Standard AI is a challenge for me
I'm finally slowly working my way through the campaigns even though I've owned the game since it came out on PC. even after all this time, I still suck at the game and would get destroyed in online
>doing the final Saladin mission but trying to force every belligerent to resign rather than build a Wonder
Very fun. Took me nearly 4 hours.

I’m playing AOE4

homie what 99% of the keybinds you need are for unit commands which correlate to positions on the keyboard.
Then just get an MMO mouse with the side buttons to handle "Select all building" and idle villager hotkeys
boom done
I don't want to be a shitter who has to click the different build buttons on the ui when I select a villager, or to manually click my dock and scroll to page two and then click build on the specific units, then i could press the dock key, then the specific unit key.

because my friends only feel like playing this game once every year or so, which kinda sucks cause i'd like to play it some more
I'm more of a Rise of Nations kinda guy
I literally am
My highest 1vs1 elo is 1700, AMA
why don't the devs buff infantry
But they do, it's just situational and will always be
>and will always be
why
if I pick an infantry civ I do it because I wanna make infantry as my main force, not just to occasionally counter eagles and shit
can't get it to run on my computer being largely comp illiterate and using linux. frick microsoft though never going back.
i prefer 4 because i like the RUS economy
