Getting to the good parts of the story requires going through a lot of mediocre dialog and quests, and I've never been the biggest MMO fan. There is a problem with some weapons, mainly the bonus ones in the Gold Saucer that they don't scale properly, so stuff like the colossal sword or spinny drill lance are too small (so if you have an idle stance that involves resting them on the floor or leaning on them, it looks goofy as frick)

Playing an MMO has become a daily/weekly checklist of 10+ tasks you need to do or you feel like youve fallen behind. It doesnt matter which MMO you tie your identity to or which one has marginally better mechanics. This core issue remains because people play these MMOs for the dopamine fix of seeing the daily task list fill up. And the RPG part of the MMORPG is completely dead. Theres no world to immerse yourself in with your friends, because the world and its content is just a backdrop for checking off boxes from your dialy tasklist

You have to do them because this is what 99% of the game is designed around if youre playing it as your main MMO and not a singleplayer story "game" you drop the moment youre done with the story. "just do what you want, the game isnt forcing you" is not an argument when the game is designed with a specific way to play in mind. Granted if youre only playing for the social side FFXIV does offer the unique oppoturnity to focus on gathering furniture for your doll house and spending all your time afking at your FC house talking to people.

I've had weeks where I cap my tomes and do everything to improve my raid progression, and other weeks where I just take a break and do fishing or PvP, then come back to raiding later. If you can even call it a treadmill it's the gentlest one imaginable. The compulsion of "I have to do this" is only relevant if you choose to race to clear savage/ultimate on release instead of at your own pace over time.

I always think back to wow classic where some very strong leveling items felt better to get than raid drops in FFXIV or nu-wow, because the devs had the bravery to make leveling a significant part of the game

Before I got my current position I used to do Savage raids as a WHM in Shadowbringers. I miss that game, even if I wads in a /vg/ guild.

Stormblood wouldn't have been as bad if Lyse was a supporting character rather than front and center. It would have been actually great if Lyse had actually just been Yda.
All the main NPCs in SB are weak. Lyse doesn't really go through an arc of understanding why her people won't just stand against the Empire, Hien basically does nothing and gets his rebellion, Zenos is terrible, scions are useless. However, the side characters like Soroban, Gosetsu, and Fordola are quite good.
I'm not going to claim they pulled it off great, but I get the genuine impression that they were holding onto that twist since 1.0.
Like, with how they used to use the Echo to confuse you by having the WoL ACTUALLY do stuff in the past, they totally had the expectations to subvert because the "present" Yda would be different from the Echo Yda. But they didn't get to do all that in 1.0 because of how all that panned out.

There is a problem with some weapons, mainly the bonus ones in the Gold Saucer that they don't scale properly, so stuff like the colossal sword or spinny drill lance are too small (so if you have an idle stance that involves resting them on the floor or leaning on them, it looks goofy as frick)

Theres no world to immerse yourself in with your friends, because the world and its content is just a backdrop for checking off boxes from your dialy tasklist

Except you don't /have/ to do any of it. Raids are for fun, not for gear. The gear they give you only makes you better at doing those raids. Almost everything you've listed is just stuff that you can do weekly if you want some particular achievement or item. The only FOMO stuff is in the seasonal events.
You have to do them because this is what 99% of the game is designed around if youre playing it as your main MMO and not a singleplayer story "game" you drop the moment youre done with the story. "just do what you want, the game isnt forcing you" is not an argument when the game is designed with a specific way to play in mind. Granted if youre only playing for the social side FFXIV does offer the unique oppoturnity to focus on gathering furniture for your doll house and spending all your time afking at your FC house talking to people.

I've had weeks where I cap my tomes and do everything to improve my raid progression, and other weeks where I just take a break and do fishing or PvP, then come back to raiding later. The compulsion of "I have to do this" is only relevant if you choose to race to clear savage/ultimate on release instead of at your own pace over time.

Stormblood wouldn't have been as bad if Lyse was a supporting character rather than front and center. It would have been actually great if Lyse had actually just been Yda.
All the main NPCs in SB are weak. Lyse doesn't really go through an arc of understanding why her people won't just stand against the Empire, Hien basically does nothing and gets his rebellion, Zenos is terrible, scions are useless. However, the side characters like Soroban, Gosetsu, and Fordola are quite good.
I'm not going to claim they pulled it off great, but I get the genuine impression that they were holding onto that twist since 1.0.
Like, with how they used to use the Echo to confuse you by having the WoL ACTUALLY do stuff in the past, they totally had the expectations to subvert because the "present" Yda would be different from the Echo Yda. But they didn't get to do all that in 1.0 because of how all that panned out.
