Why can't Bethesda into design?

I had hoped that Xbox's acquisition of Zenimax would result in Phil Spencer forcing BGS to hire more talent, I can't imagine he's too happy with the 6+ year turnaround on delivering games. I'm still holding out hope that he's cracked the whip on development of TESVI, because a 15 year gap between games is just absolutely unacceptable. But looking at the Starfield trailer and this malformed creature, I just can't understand how after 30 years of experience this company is still so far behind in terms of graphical fidelity, technology, and just basic good design. This thing is so bad it even looks poor compared to the other NPC's shown in the trailer, which are still severely lacking in all aspects. I heard there's an attitude of nepotism at BGS, that Todd hired an animator for Fallout 3 because he was a friend even though animator was awful at his job. Much smaller teams with less experience and similar scopes deliver equal if not greater quality work than BGS, what is Todd's excuse? Is Gamebryo really such a limiting factor that the artists at BGS turn out half-sucked Milk Duds like this NPC?

Boring Character design. Blaśe is no substitue for based.

You do realise the beauty of Tod's games is that they survive because of the modding community. With out the modding community all those rpgs would be long dead. Never knew any player that didnt mod skyrim or fallout once they found out they could mod it.

Who gives a frick? They make ugly game for modders who are a small class of elite gamers who get to tweak any way they want. Meanwhile their base vanilla games will always be stuck in late PS3 era and indie devs are making space games actually live up to current gen.

Modders think everything is about them and their coom

            >Who gives a frick?
I do. One of the reasons is because the devs take forever to fix bugs they take 3 years after release to fix and when they do they just create more bugs or turn the game incompatible so most people cant even play the game until they do a hot fix which takes like 2 months.

You're basing that off of performance. I'd rather have a jank cyberpunk that looks good that eventually has its issues ironed out, rather than a jank piece of playdough that still has to fumble with bugs.

From what Todd said it sounded like seamless landing would have required a total overhaul of the engine, coding at the absolute base level. It's likely impossible for them to deliver that after the fact without breaking everything.

                Anonymous

Man why do they develop shitty engines all the time? I mean if they dont want to add it fair enough but their toolkit should have the tools to add it so the community can add it themselves. This is what frustrates me about Bethesda is they give you a roughly polished stone but they give us the toolkit to polish it into a marble master piece.

A more accurate metaphor would be they hand us a gem buried in sediment and expect us with no training to extract it without causing any damage. There is something of quality in there, but they don't do the legwork to ensure that quality comes out, and instead we end up with something dirty and unimpressive. I maintain that under a different dev team the TES and Fallout IP's could be masterpieces.

Yeah your metaphor is better and describes it a lot more. Think we will ever see an Indie developer(s) that will make a game that can rival the TES/FO sereies?

Then start development of the space game with a total overhaul of the engine fit for a space game, much smaller and poorer devs with no expectations did it all the time when a new game required it, that's how we have modern tech and not garbage from 1997, what's the problem

But you're limited by Bethesda's poor quality engine. There's only so much work a modder can do to improve upon existing graphics. If Gamebryo doesn't support modern standards like subsurface scattering that isn't something a modder can implement into the engine themselves because they're using an API, not the source code. If Bethesda were to take some time to build the tools necessary to bring their games to a modern standard then modders would be in an even better position to create high quality content. None of this excuses Bethesda from still delivering poor art design however, they are more experienced and have more resources than modders, and yet they still pump out grotesque creatures. Alyx Vance in 2007 looks better than FO76 NPC's, and she looks better than what we've seen in Starfield too.

            Anonymous

Yeah I understand what your saying. Bethesda needs to get a better art dev team. But there are "upgrades" is suppose for the FO and TES games. Like ReShade and ENB turns the shit graphics to amazing cinematic visuals.

but people kept buying them on console before console modding was a thing.
arguably, it is the console sales of morrowind that kept bethesda alive in the first place, and led to the decrepitude that they have consolized their games into.

Because M$ cares about money and want to see a return on their investments. BGS isn't as untouchable as it used to be since FO76, Xbox can't let them run riot and do what they want since they have now been seen to fail and lose money. In order for Zenimax as a whole to have been a good purchase, they need to be delivering product that makes money.

I love the "Todd hired his high school buddy as an animator and that's why animation sucks" rumor because fricking no one knows where it originates from, I remember hearing it here 10 years ago and no one had a source for it then either. I'm not saying it's not true because that seems like a highly likely scenario, just that it's fascinating as a self-perpetuating rumor no one knows the origin of, it's literal folklore about a game development studio, that's hilarious.
