It's all about the dollars and propaganda nowadays, more propaganda than dollars considering videogames are intended for children, there is propaganda at school and kids get home for propaganda on their leisure as well.

DQ11 was the last game I played that felt that comfy, and it was fairly recent.

Game devs goals are wholly disjoint from ours, they don't see games as entertainment, they see them as instruments to shape society. The same thing happened to journalism, mainstream news, television, and comics. They aren't that worried about pissing off their customer base as long as the stolen wealth from inflation keeps their friends in the financial sector in the green.
