i think that fallout 3 captured the aesthetic of the first two games very well, and i don't understand the hate it gets
    >but whatabout
i have not played nv and i don't plan to
F3 should be judged by its own merits rather than retroactively comparing it to its sequel

Tim Cain (the guy who created Fallout) said that it was exactly how he imagined a 3D Fallout game would be like. So I guess you're wrong.

          >tim cain
You mean the homosexual that also made outer worlds? avellone or sawyer would know better on how to capture the aesthetic than cain.

Actually, adding to that Cain only did the programming he's credited as designer when he did frick and all for fallout barring being producer and code monkey.

NTA though, I just got my own grudge against Cain for outer worlds. I'm well aware he did a substantial amount for fallout but I won't let outer worlds go.

No he didn't, he even says himself in one of his video. Some people in the studio wanted it to be road warrior because they loved the movie and kept watching it then someone in the team came up with the whole powersuit thing and the aesthetic switched to that.
Time Cain is programmer/designer, he had nothing to do with the aesthetics

Bethesda has managed to convince the world they created Fallout. The idea of it being a satirical but bleak, Mad Max inspired franchise that tackles the dangers of nuclear war and how war will evolve after humanity has been nuked is gone. Now its all about trash collecting and using guns with nukes while running around in Power Armor and being a superhero as you build settlements or get chased by Deathclaws, and 1960s music plays in the background.

      Incredibly reductionist take.

the only bad thing you mentioned is building settlements, which luckily F3 does not have.

To be fair, this is a good decision on Bethesda's part because by the end of Fallout 2 it seems like there's restoration of civilization on the horizon. That's bad for sequels to a post-apocalyptic RPG franchise.

No one was asking for a direct sequel, they could have done many different spinoffs like New Vegas and explore the post apo world. Something in China would have been fun.

          People like

who spurn the old fandom and coast off momentary success. Then when it dies (4 and 76) they blame EVERYBODY and pout and lash out. The fact of the matter is, people who hate you for existing are making media now.

same reasons why modern gaming can't do the same, moron audience, corporations and reddit humor and writing
You need dumb gameplay even the most moron monkey can play it, while the writing/humor is kinda self explonatory, nothing can't be taken serious anymore, everything need to be a joke, ironic writing, 4th wall breaking, pop culture references, etc
Corporations want their product to reach everyone, so they try to please everyone, from gameplay to writing to story

Because bethesda threw out all the inner workings of fallout in 3, keeping just a barely working aesthetic of it. When 4 came out they just decided to make something that had nothing to do with the original games except in name.

Isometric RPGs were outdated even when Van Buren was being made. There is no reason to make isometric rpgs nowadays except for nostalgic purposes.

Wasnt referring to the way it played, more about the story and lore between factions and the wasteland. 3 does not work in the context of the first two games.

The second game did not work in the context of the second game.
          Fallout 2 Myron invented Jet
          also Fallout 2
People told stories of being addicted to jet before Myron was born.

Internal consistency was not the early Fallouts strong suit.

That's something i've been asking myself too. Fallout never tried to be too hopelessly bleak, but it seems that the series get more and more neutered with each entry, not only in aesthetics but also the writing of the setting. Slavery is completely non-existent in 4 and the closest you can be to "evil" is just a quippy douchebag who still obeys orders.

Bethesda doesn't know how to make a game with any substance to it and people know it now. The reason Starfield isn't getting nearly as good a reception is because people are starting to realize that.

      Anonymous

Nu-bethesda wants their games to be "for everyone" above everything. And that means neutering the shit out of everything and making It as inoffensive as humanly possible, Starfield feels PG-13 to the point It's as bland as plain white bread.

Because back when it looked like this it did so to appeal to 90s computer nerd teenagers. Nowadays Fallout is a house brand as far as games are concerned. You have Vault Boy jackets, Vault Boy coffee mugs, Vault Boy wallpapers. The IP is normie, it needs to sell to people that buy two games a year. You remember how frickhuge F4's E3 presentation was? Explosions, teddy bear cannons, fighting a Deathclaw with a Power Armor 20 minutes into the game, all to the tune of 50s music. It's dead, Jim.
