CheapRPGs largely died off while JRPGs had a huge resurgence in the 90s and 2000s before the shift to HD made them untenable investments outside of established franchises. They were never not evolving when it was still worth making them and you’d be hard pressed to run into the same kind of JRPG outside of the same franchise. CheapRPGs only stopped being niche when they dumped a bunch of money into them and mostly into advertising. They’ve changed far less in 30 years than JRPGs did in the 15 when they were profitable

JRPGs are designed to be beaten by 10-year olds, whereas basically all cRPGs have a teenage/adult target audience and thus can afford to have fights ask more out of you. It doesn't matter how good a JRPG's battle system is if it's all balanced around being able to be beaten by your little cousin. The notable JRPG exceptions are the ones that targeted a more "hardcore" audience like Etrian Odyssey and SMT: Nocturne.
Normally games have difficulty settings for this kind of stuff, it's just that difficulty settings in RPGs are distrusted for understandable reasons, and very few people have the energy left to replay a linear cinematics-and-story-heavy 40+ hours JRPGs just on a higher difficulty. Which is probably why JRPG devs never include them.
The JRPG that receive praise are the kid-friendly ones. Chrono Trigger is the most childish shit ever, and most JRPG fans put it in their Top Three list. The genre won't evolve past that level because its fans want something easygoing and story-driven. If there's to be anything "adult" in their games, it's romances and coomer stuff.

This is another example. You barely even play a character in Persona games. Your interaction with characters amounts to "huh", "sure", "ok", "we've got to win" etc. There is no choice, you don't pick a class, you don't format a personality, the games have casts of companions that basically talk to themselves with streams of consciousness out loud in your presence and your interaction is basically "you can do it". And the character depth is so shallow, they are like childrens books, "being mean is bad :(, believing in friendship is good :)". They scratch an itch when you are in the mood but all JRPGs games scratch that same itch basically.
It is amazing that you think it is somehow different in bg3 when it might as well be a fricking jrpg with how linear it is and how little your input matters outside of having mechanical option to kill anyone.

Even if you include epilogue and gathered allies showcase before final battle it still has frick all of different outcomes, some shoestring budget indie attempts has more branching and end states.

Oh, I can complain about gameplay too, that's atricious for sure. The game only has a handful of classes. Compare that to Pathfinder games where you have tons of different options; those games don't have so good writing either, but at least they have this thing called character customization, which is essential for a CRPG. Same goes for spells, loot, everything; only tiny amount in BG3. Hell, BG3 doesn't even have levels, the characters stop progressing at level 12 before you reach the last chapter. The amount of abilities is also a joke, you have a tiny amount of reasonable choices and this is another example of how BG3 isn't really a game at all, it just pretends to be because it knows exactly what abilities you are going to pick. Because it doesn't give any other choices. Not a single challenging fight in the game. It's just fricking terrible in every aspect. The graphics are alright, although the game runs badly and had a major memory leak at least at launch.
Any person who likes vidya and who understands anything about RPGs will hate BG3. Absolutely and definitely.
