Genuinely, what do Valve employees even do during the week? Do they just clock in and frick around?

        Anonymous

pretty much. clock in, frick around with game ideas, get really passionate about one idea, the fire fades, scrap it, attend annual hawaii retreat, rinse and repeat. Sometimes those ideas gain enough momentum to be finalized and pushed to market like a game content update or, in rare cases, a full-fledged release like Alyx.

iirc gaben or someone else said in an interview that everyone just does their own shit with 99% of those projects getting scrapped

the entire company is just a retirement home for veteran developers (and sometimes other professions like news anchors/pixar animators)
you get to enjoy the complimentary lunch, snacks, big pink cookies, get your laundry done for free by asian immigrants, and barely do any work. all while praising cult leader gabe as he gives you a free hawaii vacation once a year

We’re all just resentfully jealous. Also, HL3 is in Duke Nukem Forever territory now. There’s no point ever releasing it. It’d be bashed to oblivion and back if they ever released it, unless it was a literal 11/10 industry changing title.

Alyx was just Half-Life 2 in VR, it didn't add anything new to the HL franchise at all. They even replaced EP2's cliffhanger with another cliffhanger.
The only "new" things HLA: did were VR game mechanics, and that's a stretch because Boneworks did most of what Alyx did before Alyx even came out.

Fricking this. The creator of SDL, Sam Lantinga, is employed at Valve. A software developer who made a crossplatform library that has been used to port pretty much every old game ever is wasting away at Valve software with his desk on wheels and Valve employee handbook. Valve is where dreams go to die with a salary. COVID should’ve been their big break to actually get some work done, but it seems all they could muster is copying Blizzard’s (game)2 and posting some shit memes.

I'm pretty sure he meant 600, because for a cookie that small to be 6000 calories, it'd have to be made out of concentrated lard or something

Valve's only goal is to get more people on Steam. They're at the point where making new games themselves really isn't going to result in that. It makes a lot more sense to focus on hardware.

  11. 8 months ago
    Anonymous

no technological reason to. HL2 was built to display physics, Alyx was built to explore VR. There's obviously no new challenge for them to overcome and showoff.

From what I understand every Half Life title usually marks a certain advancement in the development of video games.

The fact that Half Life Alyx was developed to mark the development of VR is an example of that.

so valve basically uses half life to shill their other products?

        Anonymous

        Yes

        Anonymous

Nah, it's more like they're shilling themselves. Valve has developed so few games because they got high off of genuine infinite money from Steam and they're actually "artists" who will "only make a project that pushes the realm of gaming further". They frick around with random crap, first the steam controller, then partnered with HTC Vive years ago, then that developed into making SteamVR and then Alyx. As others have said in this thread, developers long past their prime go to volvo for mad buxx and benefits so that GabeN can pretend to still be making games. The only people who have actually worked 8 hours a day for years at Valve are whoever is maintaining the webpage and bugfixing Steam's store (all 3 of them).

          Anonymous

          that would be Lawrence Yang
he also had a big part in making the Steam Deck on top of his regular Steam maintenance work, almost like he's one of the only people at Valve who actually works full time

        Anonymous

Yeah, They use half-life as a big demo tech of what the source engine can do, So basically we are getting half-life 3 when source 3 is ready

It's strange to me how PC gamers worship Valve. They made good games sure but then they popularized DRM and took away customer rights. Now they own a monopoly on the PC gaming world and homosexuals somehow think the EGS is what's killing the industry.

I don’t understand this board. You homosexuals cry about le heckin goyslop nonstop but you want a company to force a sequel out that they’re very clearly not interested in doing. If the dev teams know they can’t do it, don’t have the write idea, their heart isn’t in it or whatever the frick, why would you want them to force it out?

Why though? Laidlaw is gone. It won’t even feel like a proper continuation of the story that was left off. It’s better to just leave it. They’re making the right decision by leaving it dead.

The reality is that they will release hl3 now that hl:alyx has retconned the story and given it new ground to tread. It wont be called hl3 most likely, since it's such a meme name by this point, but it will be the inevitable source 2 game where you are actually playing as gordon freeman again. I don't think there's any question if we're going to see it it's just a matter of when.

  17. 8 months ago
    Anonymous

I think they said this before. It won't live up to the expectations.

The amount of money they would make, even on a smash hit, is trivial compared to what they earn passively. So the real thing is not the extra money HL3 would bring but what it would do to their reputation. Best case scenario everyone loves it and they get an extremly minor reputation boost. Worst case scenerio people are disapointed because they are expecting something more than just a well made shooter about going through corridors (which is what half life is); it needs to fufill all their dreams and be hopes. That's a big reputation hit. So you do a risk-reward analysis and see it's not worth it.

You have only yourself to blame for this as it's all response to how you have talked about it.

because Half Life 1 and 2 were nothing more than tech demos to show off new engines and to use as base modding platforms for their other games.
also who actually wants a HL3? 1 gets shit halfway thru and 2 was shit in general

  23. 8 months ago

They have no motivation or desire to make HL3. And why should they when that "new" Counterstrike game they just released will probably make them more money in a single month than HL3 would in its entire lifetime.
