From what I’ve seen, hardcore Tifa fans in the West tend to fall into three categories: coomers, dudes self-inserting into Cloud and dreaming about a submissive childhood friend tradwife, and women self-inserting into Tifa because of their anxiety, low self-esteem, and inability to sort out their feelings. Basically, many Westerners don’t even seem to like her as a character (she’s neither a submissive meek mess nor a porn bawd), they just project their fetishes/hangups on her.
first off she's a great kickboxer and second off she stuck with Cloud through thick and thin unlike that fly by night floozy Aeris (who I agree is not a prostitute btw)
Tifa is defined by her grief and loss throughout her life, manifesting in her conflicted nature, low self-esteem, and her reserved tendencies. As a child, she was more outgoing, chipper, and extroverted, but the trauma of losing her mother at eight years old made her withdrawn at the time, and introverted later in life. As a teenager she lost her father and hometown in the Nibelheim incident and as an adult experienced the fall of the Sector 7 plate. As a result, Tifa feels grief and anger towards both Shinra and Sephiroth, driving her desire for revenge. This, as well as her coping mechanism for pain being to withstand it rather than run from it leads her to join Avalanche to get back at Shinra.
While she acknowledges they have to be bold to make a change, she is ill at ease about the use of methods such as the reactor bombings and feels trapped, expressing guilt at many of their actions.
Her conflicted nature allows her to resolve a tense argument between Cait Sith and Barret, able to understand both sides. Ultimately, when alone with Cloud to talk about her feelings of loss, she is overwhelmed and simply bursts into tears, showing her fragile emotional state which she tries to conceal.
Too bad most of that is in theory and isn't really explored. Aside from being all around a generic pure sweet waifu the only thing about her that is explored is her love for Cloud. Oh and in Remake she's a bit of a downer too.
That's all informed backstory that the game for the most part does nothing with. In the OG she supposedly is so angry with Shinra that she stoops to terrorism but the game does nothing else with it. It's Barret that goes through that arc and has to face up what he's done, Tifa doesn't even get a mention when Cait Sith chews Barret out about it later. She should also have a grudge against Sephiroth but the game never bothers to explore that, that all goes to Cloud.
Even that you mentioned about her feeling trapped (which is far as I remember is a Remake addition) doesn't matter. She's never shown to be a liability, she still goes out to do terrorism, Avalanche still take her out on missions and she never fricks up a mission due to any internal conflict.
Truth is the way the plot unfolds she's a non entiry who sits in the back of the bus until the plot needs her to confirm Cloud's identity. The plot and her fans try to excuse this after the fact by saying she was scared or whatever but that doesn't undo the entire game up until that point when hardly anything unfolds with her and she shows barely any personality. She's the ultimate "told, not shown" character.

That's right, she reminded him of their promise "to safe her in her time of need/when she feels trapped" (I am sure that distinction is just a translation issue), which means it's the same in the OG as well, just expressed in a different way.

How I remember it in the OG is that she remarked on the bombing saying something along the lines of "it needed to be done" and didn't show any actual regret. So if the JAP version uses the word 'trapped' then it's not the same as how Remake uses it because in the OG you don't get the idea that she feels stuck there.

Wrong, that's not what happens.
Cloud is about to leave, then Tifa reminds him of their promise, then Cloud goes "but I didn't really become a hero, so I can't fulfill that promise" but Tifa counters with "but you became a SOLDIER like you said, so you can do it, right?" and then Cloud goes deep into thought.
Only THEN does Barret appear and give him the money saying "a promise is a promise" and Cloud responds arrogantly with "only 1500 gil?! Next time it's 3000!" >How I remember it in the OG
Keep in mind that the translation of the OG was quite infamous for its inaccuracies at times. Wouldn't surprise me if that was one of those instances.

I just watched the scene and this isn't right. Immediately after she says this Barret climbs out of the basement with Cloud's money. The game doesn't show him going deep into thought. He was going to leave before Barret inadvertently reminded him to keep his word. That's literally how the scene is set up and played out.

That's 100% your headcanon. OK, I got the gesture wrong, Cloud was not showing his thinking pose, but he was still rubbing his head on Tifa's words, showing that he was already feeling conflicted and then Tifa said "keep your promise!" You have no proof that he would have ultimately said no to her and left if Barret had not appeared. That would seem quite out of character even for Cloud if he did that. His chance to appear cool and aloof (while also being an idiot who almost forgot to get his pay first before leaving) was already long gone. Infact it sounded like he would already no longer leave even by the point where he said that he cannot fulfill his promise as he seemed to feel guilty about it (at least far as can be interpreted from the wonky TL and polygon figures).

I've listed the events as they happened and the conclusions that I drew from them. If you think that a split second animation and your own assumptions about Cloud's motives call for a completely different interpretation then you do you. But really if the game wanted to show Tifa swaying Cloud all by herself it would have had him agree BEFORE Barret turned up so there was no doubt. At the very least you have to acknowledge that Tifa wasn't able to convince him alone.

Exactly. Where would he even go to afterwards if he actually left? It's not like he has any other contacts within Midgar. He'd hardly go to Shinra after participating in a terrorist attack against them. At worst he'd comically go around resisting the urge to go back out of fear that it would be "uncool" to go back again and some dumb stunt like "just so happening to run into AVALANCHE" while they are going into the direction of the train" or something.
Cloud doing merc jobs as side-quests is certainly one thing that Remake fixed over the OG.

We'll see. I wouldn't be surprised if Remake made it just Aerith considering how much more story importance she's getting. Also, all of the date mechanics didn't seem to be in Part 1.

Crisis Core did massive damage to aerith's character. The truth is that she was always a very forward character with her attitude. Like proposing a date with cloud when they talk to make a deal.
But then a part of the fans thought this was a b***h behavior so that's why nojima made Zack be a copy of Cloud in his events to give her lines like "one date" in Crisis Core. But then everything about Zack and Aerith's relationship was just him "molding" her to be the one we know, which sucks a lot and removes all her personality. The way she talks, moves and even dresses became influence of Zack.
The fact Nojima even made him fall on the church is laughable.
I think Zack being influential in Aerith makes total sense, but when you go from him having an impact to shaping even the way she dresses and talks it is too much. Then he also copied whole events that happen with Cloud.

I wish I could get into FFXIV, but every time I try I always end up quitting "before it gets good" (Can't even get halfway through the release version of Realm Reborn). If it was a regular game without a subscription, I could probably do it, but it's such a fricking slog getting from point A to B in quests. I like JRPGs because there's a colourful cast of characters along for the ride and having decent moments with each other, but that barely happened from the story bits I played.

It's OG FF7 all over again. They're making you invest emotionally into Cloud and Aeris' relationship so the reaction will be just like it was for millions of people back in 1997 when it all fell apart.

This whole Zack alive thing was a mistake period, but hopefully they manage to resolve it all in some satisfying way. I don't imagine he makes it to the end of the trilogy. Perhaps Sephiroth's merging of the worlds fricks things up for characters that weren't meant to be there, who knows.

That's the way it always was. People need to watch the original version of AC, Cloud was hung up on Aerith and on Aerith alone. The ACC version just added Zack everywhere much like CC tried to make the world retroactively revolve around him.
Cloud fell in love with Aerith and didn't realize it until she was gone. Then he spent all those years missing her. Hollow even says that he will forever go on howling and hollow because she's gone. None of that is an accident, it's the same story they have been telling for decades.

I think that it's clear that if Aerith had lived, Cloud would've ended up with her. I also think it's clear that it's them that Square Enix see as the main love story in FF7. They're the typical tragic, star-crossed lovers bullshit they love. Noctis/Luna are basically Cloud and Aerith with a happy ending.
Tifa's romantic relevancy is to be Cloud's past love, much like Zack's was Aerith's. But since Aerith died, Tifa also serves as a sort of consolation prize for the player who self-inserts into Cloud.

I'm glad they're pushing it, they didn't have to show the world that at the game awards but they did. it's been difficult discussing that part of the narrative with Cloud all these years without being gaslit into thinking if I were a fan of the game and characters or a fanfiction.

On a storytelling level I like Cloud dying a lot. In the OG his greatest failure was not being able to save her so there's a big redemptive component to it if he takes the hit for her this time. It's also a great role reversal with Aerith being the one to lose him and having to try to press on. Not that it would be permanent because like you said she'll find a way to save him in the end but it will be a great setup for part 3.
Not sure how to feel about the other Aerith just being a puppet for our Aerith. That doesn't seem like something she'd want to do to someone.

Cloud dies but in order to make fujos happy, Square Enix has Sephiroth sacrifice his life by transplanting his heart into Cloud and Cloud lives on with Sephiroth's heart beating inside him for the rest of his life.
My question is how the frick they would send both aerith and cloud to the other place without appearing goofy as frick with both of them dying.

Beagle Cloud doesn't even have to die. He can just possess his Terrier self during the time where his Beagle self has fallen into the lifestream and switched back to mako-poisoning mode, he'd just have to "conveniently forget" all stuff that happened at the Northern Crater, but that stuff would obviously be in part 3.

Unlike all the others, the only ones who have shown to have visions of the OG timeline where Aerith, Sephiroth and Cloud (maybe Marlene?), and at that time Cloud while still alive is still physically present within the lifestream itself and might be the one human being with the most direct Mako contact and infusions ever, possibly even more so than Sephiroth.
Would be shit from a storytelling perspective because the whole point of cloud vanishing is how other party members take charge. It is an awesome plot point. Removing him just to see him running around in another world removes this weight
Could easily make it look like very fragile stability. Maybe even having dialogue choices that end up in game over screens when choosing the wrong topics to discuss, with Zack and Aerith having to choose dialogue choices that have to convince Cloud that everything that seems inconsistent is actually just a difference between the timeline like the two different Stamps.

Cloud's memory thing seems more like info that will change how he acts or how he feels about future events, wanting to change it. And it is 100% related to Aerith's death. In Rebirth we'll spend the whole game with him seeing her death before it happens. It is to keep cloud and the player on edge.
And about your second take, this would also cause a massive shitshow because would take the relevance of tifa's arc to give to Aerith and Zack. This would legit make people bomb SE. The whole story of Tifa is building up to her taking charge when he vanishes and being responsible for his mind getting fixed

But it's the complete opposite of that. It would explicitly show that Aerith and Zack infact cannot resolve Cloud's issue. They'd have to work around it just not to turn Cloud into a vegetable again and then Aerith would guide Cloud back to Tifa for the greatest moment of the OG and say goodbye to him. That wouldn't even be much different from the OG since it's been implied that Aerith helped the two bring about that "subconscious space", all that would change is Aerith doing it from a parallel world rather than as some persisting lifestream ghost.

No that would not work. Zack cannot disprove that Cloud was simply already a Shinra-made monster creature by the time they first met. He needs to get back to his childhood memories to confirm himself as a normal human being (albeit infused with all manners of crazy jenova and mako stuff and being exposed to direct physical lifestream contact for days, maybe even weeks). Zack cannot deliver that, and Aerith even less so.

By contrast if you compare Cloud and Zack's actual time and interactions with Aerith then Zack has exponentially way more history and relationship building than Cloud did with a girl he only knew for a few weeks.

Aerith helps them move on if they have negative feelings and can reconstruct them by interacting with the lifestream's memories, but they don't have a strong image like her and have to return because tired.

That's because Tifa's character can be summed up as "I LOVE CLOUD!" She basically has no other traits, perhaps moreso in the remake even.

As a child, she was more outgoing, chipper, and extroverted, but the trauma of losing her mother at eight years old made her withdrawn at the time, and introverted later in life. As a teenager she lost her father and hometown in the Nibelheim incident and as an adult experienced the fall of the Sector 7 plate. As a result, Tifa feels grief and anger towards both Shinra and Sephiroth, driving her desire for revenge. This, as well as her coping mechanism for pain being to withstand it rather than run from it leads her to join Avalanche to get back at Shinra.
While she acknowledges they have to be bold to make a change, she is ill at ease about the use of methods such as the reactor bombings and feels trapped, expressing guilt at many of their actions.
Her conflicted nature allows her to resolve a tense argument between Cait Sith and Barret, able to understand both sides. Ultimately, when alone with Cloud to talk about her feelings of loss, she is overwhelmed and simply bursts into tears, showing her fragile emotional state which she tries to conceal.

That's all informed backstory that the game for the most part does nothing with. In the OG she supposedly is so angry with Shinra that she stoops to terrorism but the game does nothing else with it. It's Barret that goes through that arc and has to face up what he's done, Tifa doesn't even get a mention when Cait Sith chews Barret out about it later. She should also have a grudge against Sephiroth but the game never bothers to explore that, that all goes to Cloud.
Even that you mentioned about her feeling trapped (which is far as I remember is a Remake addition) doesn't matter. She's never shown to be a liability, she still goes out to do terrorism, Avalanche still take her out on missions and she never fricks up a mission due to any internal conflict.
Truth is the way the plot unfolds she's a non entiry who sits in the back of the bus until the plot needs her to confirm Cloud's identity. The plot and her fans try to excuse this after the fact by saying she was scared or whatever but that doesn't undo the entire game up until that point when hardly anything unfolds with her and she shows barely any personality. She's the ultimate "told, not shown" character.

Only THEN does Barret appear and give him the money saying "a promise is a promise" and Cloud responds arrogantly with "only 1500 gil?! Next time it's 3000!"

I just watched the scene and this isn't right. Immediately after she says this Barret climbs out of the basement with Cloud's money. The game doesn't show him going deep into thought. He was going to leave before Barret inadvertently reminded him to keep his word. That's literally how the scene is set up and played out.

That's 100% your headcanon. OK, I got the gesture wrong, Cloud was not showing his thinking pose, but he was still rubbing his head on Tifa's words, showing that he was already feeling conflicted and then Tifa said "keep your promise!" You have no proof that he would have ultimately said no to her and left if Barret had not appeared. That would seem quite out of character even for Cloud if he did that. His chance to appear cool and aloof (while also being an idiot who almost forgot to get his pay first before leaving) was already long gone. Infact it sounded like he would already no longer leave even by the point where he said that he cannot fulfill his promise as he seemed to feel guilty about it (at least far as can be interpreted from the wonky TL and polygon figures).

If you think that a split second animation and your own assumptions about Cloud's motives call for a completely different interpretation then you do you. Crisis Core did massive damage to aerith's character. The truth is that she was always a very forward character with her attitude. Like proposing a date with cloud when they talk to make a deal.
But then a part of the fans thought this was a b***h behavior so that's why nojima made Zack be a copy of Cloud in his events to give her lines like "one date" in Crisis Core. But then everything about Zack and Aerith's relationship was just him "molding" her to be the one we know, which sucks a lot and removes all her personality. I wish I could get into FFXIV, but every time I try I always end up quitting "before it gets good" (Can't even get halfway through the release version of Realm Reborn). If it was a regular game without a subscription, I could probably do it, but it's such a fricking slog getting from point A to B in quests. I like JRPGs because there's a colourful cast of characters along for the ride and having decent moments with each other, but that barely happened from the story bits I played.
I guess it's free up to Stormblood or whatever, so I guess I could give it another shot.

I didn't even know you could get different dude's at the golden saucer date thing as a kid, later found out the reason I always get Aerith was because she starts with a 20 point lead over Tifa with the hidden affection system.
It’s relatively easy to beat it and get the Tifa date. Just keep Tifa in the party and ditch Aerith and whenever possible talk to Tifa first. I think for the others you have to put in some actual effort though.

You're probably right that it won't be as simple as the prime Cloud waking up in the Zack timeline but I will absolutely bet my left nut that wheelchair Cloud will be the ultimate destination for our Cloud's mind.
As for the other Aerith. Hard to say. Maybe our Aerith and Cloud die together at the forgotten city, with Aerith straight up waking up in the Zack timeline with her memories. Then her and Zack have to find a way to fix wheelchair Cloud.

Yeah I don't know how it can play out without being contrived as frick. Sephiroth would need to somehow kill Cloud by accident because he doesn't actually want him dead. And if he knows the future then he shouldn't want Aerith dead and in a position to command the lifestream either.
How they get there seems really iffy, but I don't see why they'd have a backup Cloud and Aerith if they didn't intend to use them. Remember that there's no Barret or Tifa in the Zack timeline, they've deliberately set this up so that it's only Aerith and Cloud. It has to be for some purpose.
You know what. I think that only Cloud could die, the party would be devastated but Aerith herself could find a way to jump between timelines after she realizes she can save him. This way only one would need to die. And she being the one who can transfer herself makes sense, knowing how she's a cetra.
If she's going to survive this would be the most interesting route because she being the one trying to save him this time would make sense.
On a storytelling level I like Cloud dying a lot. In the OG his greatest failure was not being able to save her so there's a big redemptive component to it if he takes the hit for her this time. It's also a great role reversal with Aerith being the one to lose him and having to try to press on. Not that it would be permanent because like you said she'll find a way to save him in the end but it will be a great setup for part 3.

Yeah, it would be a good conclusion to his own arc. I feel like closer to her death he will be have so much info that he will feel the guilt of AC Cloud. So this inversion of roles would be interesting because now aerith would be the one feeling guilt over what happens to him.
And we dont even know if the other aerith is a real aerith or just a bug or double caused by the split of timelines. Depending of where it happened they could be the same person but with less memories.

Cloud's memory thing seems more like info that will change how he acts or how he feels about future events, wanting to change it. And it is 100% related to Aerith's death. In Rebirth we'll spend the whole game with him seeing her death before it happens. It is to keep cloud and the player on edge.

The whole story of Tifa is building up to her taking charge when he vanishes and being responsible for his mind getting fixed

But it's the complete opposite of that. It would explicitly show that Aerith and Zack infact cannot resolve Cloud's issue. They'd have to work around it just not to turn Cloud into a vegetable again and then Aerith would guide Cloud back to Tifa for the greatest moment of the OG and say goodbye to him. That wouldn't even be much different from the OG since it's been implied that Aerith helped the two bring about that "subconscious space", all that would change is Aerith doing it from a parallel world rather than as some persisting lifestream ghost.
All you need to help Cloud is to be able to prove that our Cloud is the real Cloud and the truth of Nibelheim. In the OG this was something that only Tifa could do because she was the only one left alive who both knew him before the reactor incident and was present at the reactor itself. But that's not exactly true anymore is it?
No that would not work. Zack cannot disprove that Cloud was simply already a Shinra-made monster creature by the time they first met. He needs to get back to his childhood memories to confirm himself as a normal human being (albeit infused with all manners of crazy jenova and mako stuff and being exposed to direct physical lifestream contact for days, maybe even weeks). Zack cannot deliver that, and Aerith even less so.

Not even Sephiroth can sustain himself within the lifestream. Aerith can, because she's an Ancient, but normal dudes just erode and become apart of the planets system, eventually get reincarnated as cabbages. It's not like people are just hanging out there. Aerith helps them move on if they have negative feelings and can reconstruct them by interacting with the lifestream's memories, but they don't have a strong image like her and have to return because tired.
