The truth is, gamefreak always had dogshit graphics.
Gen 2 and 4 were the only aesthetically pleasing gens.
Gen 5 in particular was fricking garbage with close up pixilated sprite twinned backsprites and gen 3 was the ugliest popular game on gba.
Then the washed up 3d models with stiff animations became a thing, and people blamed 3d for dogshit designs like terrakion looking bad in 3d.
Honestly pokemon can go back to pixels and it would still be lazy shit, i assume morons would then claim that pokemon should go back to black and white

Don't play in direct sunlight. Otherwise it was perfectly fine on an actual GBC. I never had issues seeing what was happening.
The trees look just fine. Sprite tiles were used on every title for the GBC and Gold/Silver/Crystal's looked better than most.

XY are by far the ugliest in the series, even worse than Scarlet and Violet.
Platinum has good parts like the Distortion World, but the rest of the game just looks way worse than HGSS, especially the cutscenes.
Black and White have terrible proc-gen sprites and ungainly 3D assets plastered everywhere in the camera's face. HGSS had a better sense of shame over those and pushed them into the background better.
LGPE has a nice aesthetic, but the game kills itself by failing to use it well. Just remaking RBY almost 1:1 with a far more complicated graphical style makes the game feel deranged to play.

The animated sprites were likely keyframed to specific positions and then procedurally generated to fill the 'tweens. That was easily doable for low res pixel art even in 2010.
No standard animation rigging software would have churned out such mulchy spritework otherwise. And no pixel artist would have drawn that by hand.
And I think the spritework in GSC never looked good at all. Nobody will change anyone's minds though so I won't continue.

It would have actually been better if all of the main titles were both 3D and 2D. 3D for overworld graphics, and 2D for battles. The transition to 3D brought on a range of logistical issues that were more than Gamefreak could handle, which is how you get the poorly optimized and glitched up trash that has become the norm with these games.

I used to think this about game freak, but then I played a certain strategy RPG that uses 2D sprites, on the Switch, and it graphically blows every single pokemon game out of the water. It made me realise that GF will NEVER put in the effort to create something that looks actually beautiful, they can just chase the industry "trend" of 3D graphics since thats what the masses expect video games to be.

They do by every standard. There's more of them than just the 1-2 prior to XY and they exist for specific types of moves / actions / emotions. The 2D sprites have always been inferior to any 3D entry in the series because of this.
