Its gameplay is shit, in the sense that is perfunctory, not actively aggravating. A step down from the first game as a survival horror game. Fortunately it excels in other areas.
SH2 is an awful fricking travesty of a game no one should ever play, with some of the best atmosphere, writing, symbolism and pacing of any piece of media to ever exist. I would consider it torturous to be forced to play that game, but its strengths are undeniable, especially when put in context with the rest of the series.

Thinking about my playthrough of SH2 was such an incredible experience. Actually sitting down and playing through a bit of it right now is painful.

Difference between iconic and mascot. PH obviously meant a great deal to him from a narrative standpoint, and he probably thinks PHs impact feels cheapened when portrayed as things other than what he is in SH2.
