It's just that it was marketed and spammed so much and with the bear thing it got a lot of normalgays that have never played this kind of game to play it to fit into the hivemind. Now they can virtue signal about being a "big nerd", and act like they have complex taste. Very similar situation to disco elysium but on a bigger scale.
Just keep in mind that they will start to invade even these more classic, niche styles/genres of games and so it won't just be big AAA generic third person slop overran by normalgays, every genre will be. Their virtue signaling has no end.

Be on the lookout in the next couple of years for when they inevitably release the definitive edition. Will still be the same mechanics but it might be more appealing to you if they iron everything out and add what they need to add. Making it a refined example of what this game's trying to be (albeit the first act is very very refined already, not so much the third)
They have always released the definitive edition free for people who have the base game.

Romance/sex games are wildly popular with gamers. Even Ganker was obsessed with a Romance sim about disabled girls years and years ago, and would NOT shut the frick up about it for the longest time.
Bioware games famously had a shit ton of women gamers who were obsessed with the romance options in Bioware games.

Even in modern Ganker, where people will pretend they're above it, you'll get hourly threads about "is this character hotter or that character hotter" or "For Me? It's X character" threads.

Games with romance options or shipping-bait sells.

I restarted multiple times, my current act 3 save has ~30 hours of playtime, and I did clear out act 1 and 2 on it. Include reloading paths which I realized were wrong and we can say 35 hours or so to clear out both acts. I'm lv9, halfway or more to 10.

Why the frick do you care so much that people play some random game? I never played it and most likely never will because I fricking hate cRPGs, but it's clear that a lot of people do genuinely enjoy it and I don't see how that's bad, considering the game's free of all those scummy AAA practices and actually makes big studios shit their pants because some no-name devs actually managed to release a better product that any multi-million dollar company in the recent decade. What does bg3 do thats actually interesting

I played dos1+2, decent games, but last time I checked the average gamer may not have ever even heard of them. Baldurs Gate is the same, essentially a dead franchise. Apparently there's some connection to DND, but that hasn't been obvious to me.

So the game isn't riding on name recognition. Yet I haven't seen any posts about gameplay. No sick webms of high skill maneuvering or tactics or interesting mechanics. So that's not the draw either.

All that leaves is presentation and marketing. Something about bear sex, monsters having sex, devs complaining that bg3 is LITERALLY going to ruin the industry because it's so good...

What is there to praise? Why should I play this game?

        Anonymous

        >but last time I checked the average gamer may not have ever even heard of them
Im inclined to ask when the last time you checked was, because DOS2's overwhelming popularity is why Larian was able to get the go ahead to make BG3 in the first place

          Anonymous

Google tells me DOS2 sold a million in 2 months. Again, great game. No shade. But my buddies at work have never heard of it. It's no starfield or fifa.

And the last big game came out 23 years ago, so it doesn't really seem like some cash cow that only the greatest devs can handle. Or the franchise wouldn't have been inactive for longer than most posters have been alive.

            >But my buddies at work have never heard of it
that's a (you) problem, m8. Game got tons of threads here in 2018 when the DE upgrade rolled out for free. To argue nobody heard of it because you didnt is asinine. Comparing it to AAAslop like Starfield or yearly sports shit like fifa is even more so

It's not any more asinine than saying that a game is popular because people posted about it on Ganker

But this is how this conversation goes every time. I ask: "why is this game deserving of all the hype?" And all I get is hand wringing and redirection.

Maybe the real reason nobody ever engages you in good faith is because you dont post in good faith in the first place?
If you want to watch videos of gameplay, go to websites where people upload videos of gameplay. Making up moronic excuses to justify yourself is just that, moronic. Even more so when you contradict yourself so blatantly
