Theme Park autist here. There's heavy rumors right now that Pokemon will be the next addition to Universal Orlando, being built in the footprint of the woody woodpecker kid's land next to ET (which is also likely on the chopping block).
Originally Super Mario Land was supposed to go there but they decided it needed more space to fully flesh out their plans for it. I would not be surprised if Super Mario launches state-side to a massive success and results in pokemon being similarly moved to Epic Universe to occupy a much larger footprint.

seriously its not that hard from a tech perspective. Do go karts with a Virtual tracking system that tracks where the cars are on the track, their engine speed etc. Just put infared QR codes painted on the road and have sensors under the go karts so when the karts go over an "item box" the kart knows and gives you an "item" in the virtual race. WHich you can then throw a shell at someone and their car will slow down and rumble and move around. Its SERIOUSLY NOT HARD to have real life mario kart, this was the ONCE chance and they fricking blew it. so dumb.
