have any recent battle tech games been good
I've been painting some minis (coincidentally I'm WIP on a Catapult) and really wanted to play some vidya

Define good. MW5 is fine after modding. The AI is moronic, but rose colored glasses: the AI has always been moronic. It’s shorts on head to mw4’s pants on head to mw3’s mittens pinned to pants on head to… you get the idea.

ok thanks, MW5 it is, I'll have to look into it

It does have problems, mind. The mechlab is kind of meh without modding in YAML. It’s pre-invasion, so no clanshit without modding, which may or may not be a concern. It relies heavily on le procgen trend, which inevitably results in some goofy shit being generated now and then. Still better than running the same handful of missions over and over again IMO. Otoh, the scripted missions range from decent (main campaign) to p. fukkin good (expansions). But those are a minority; most of your drops will be on dynamically generated shit.

My biggest personal complaint is multiplayer is a wonky coop afterthought because PGI was unwilling to outright kill the gold-painted goose that is (or at least was) MWO.

tl;dr It’s not the MechWarrior we all hopelessly wish for and frankly are never going to get. But it’s fine.

HBS battletech is fun if you're not too autistic about the tabletop rules.

Locust / Strider / Fire Moth / Shadow cat / Flea / Owens / Grand Dragon
    >they dont fly
Every land-air mech / anything with 4+ JJs
    >they dont swim
All can operate submerged and even carry torpedos
    >they dont go into space
All are vacuum proofed, also LAMs again
    >they cant even get over steep hills
    Yes they can

I'm a bit of an outsider with absolutely loving LAMs. yeah they're fricking bullshit to try to balance, they're odd ducks, and they don't exactly fulfil the roles as either aerospace fighters or mechs, but fricking hell can they move fast and be incredibly annoying to rear echelons.
My love for LAMs might have something to do with me getting into the franchise after being a long time fan of Japanese mecha so the headaches LAM caused were well before my time.

Would they have a practical use on the modern battlefield or would tanks and jets just clear them?

They would dominate urban combat, because height is actually an advantage in that scenario.

All battlemechs in the setting are rated for EVA actually, the main character in MW2 Merc wounds how the hell bugs managed to sneak into his mech on Wocott when he knows for a fact when the canopy shuts its capable of going for a walk in barren and atmosphereless moons with no problem

In game /board game, they don't swim but they are fairly sealed (the wienerpit).
    Even books

True lore is that they are scary fast, insanely maneuverable, and make even the true gundams with new types piloting them seem slow.
It also explains why new pilots have such a hard time with them even going from sims to the real deal.
Solaris (boardgame focused around 1v1 or really small battles) had them making insane maneuvers when you account for what a turn equals.

    [...]

    >they don't fly
LAMs in Battletech, a bit of lost tech and they didn't excel in either field so not really around.

There was a post that basically broke down armor rating and tried to compare it to real life values. Armor is basically pretty thin compared to real life but capable of insane absorption when compared to laser hits and ballistics.
The weapons in lore are pretty much hyper sonic so modern weaponry wouldn't do more than scratch the paint.

SRMs were basically Javelins, MRM were pretty much RPG-29, I forget what LRMs were (maybe I got confused and they were modernized Javelin equivalents).

Pretty sure it is Mechwarrior: Living Legends, a total conversion multiplayer that ran on top of Crysis Wars. You could also be an aero pilot or elemental (not sure if they had other Battle armor)

yep, I need to get back into that game
