I played both deep into end game and I always had fonder memories of Everquest.

Everquest was nearly 5 years old when WoW launched. WoW just sanded off all the rough edges EQ had and it was made to run on basically every hardware that existed in that time period.

EQ was already in steep decline due to terrible actions on the part of Sony and Verant which had pissed off much of the community. Stuff like letting EQ1 rot while they focused on EQ2 which turned out to be a complete bust. WoW was basically like opening a release valve for people's frustrations.

Wow ran on my computer, but it did get very slow in some cities. Adding more ram fixed it

Basically these two things, Luclin very much was the cata of EQ1, and made things get worse quicky and make the old guard very angry, then Blizzard comes along and with a shiny polished up new game that sands off all the rough edges & genuine challenge, while also being hardware flexible.
WoW sadly also killed most Realistic fantasy for who knows how long, i've yet to see the style of things before it make any kind of return.

turns out nobody likes relying on others or making friends. an easy mistake to make if you're the second mmo to ever hit the market in the year 1999.

I miss eq so much. The way I remember it was that eq's player base had done everything there was to do in eq and was looking for the next high. Also eq at that point in time went through what wow went through and made it shit where the devs changed to game to appeal to casuals to attract more people. I was a sophomore in highschool at the time.

Isn't EQ a money printer still because they just keep cycling through content patches with their servers, like what WoW is doing with their classic servers?

I think it's along the line of it having next to nothing in terms of costs for upkeep but they can still catch a few whale nibbles from time to time which keeps the whole shebang going.

They've also been getting progressively less stuffed with content since Veil of Alaris.

eq1 is easily the worst game I have ever played. It's baffling how dated, boring, and ugly the game is.

EQ definitely suffers from what came after. It's not very good in hindsight, and a lot of the stupid decisions that WoW made came directly from EQ.

EQ1 was ground breaking in that something like it could event exist in 1999. Its designed around people using 28.8k modems and shit, the combat and movement stuff is janky by design to handle the godawful hardware of its era. WoW came out solidly within the broadband era so it could have silky smooth movement. There is also the problem that EQ looked towards early D&D as its design template while WoW looked towards EQ and Diablo 2 for inspiration. The skill trees from D2 helped add a lot of variation to some classes that would otherwise have been ungodly boring like Priest. In EQ Clerics were total boring trash to level, either you exclusively hunted undead stuff, which wasn't really the practice in 1999, or you healbotted. In WoW you could play Shadow to 60 and then raid as a Holy Priest. Learning from EQ was why WoW was so effective, also they had learned a lot from Diablo and Diablo 2 on how to manage loot initially.

EQ was ran by literal morons. Every other day there was a news story about SoE fricking players in the ass. GMs used to intervene in important events to specifically favor guilds that they liked.

SoE was running it. The same company that ruined Star Wars Galaxies and Planetside 1.
