This was my experience. I played through HW, stopped for stormblood, and came back toward the end of SB. By the time I did the game was infested with trannies and roleplayers.
FFXIV was only popular because of asmongold. Outside of that the game was entirely irrelevant and dying.

Parsetrannies who are the reason the 2 minute meta exist don't care about fun though, they just like seeing their numbers go up. Ban all parsetrannies and just focus on making jobs fun to play.
ngl I enjoyed the buff alignment in Alpha Omega. That competition with the enrage cast bar during your burst window gets the blood going. It'd be possible with odd timers but it'd remove WC2 as a potential burst window as it'd be misaligned with 3mins. Also 90s would have to be held for 30s every time
What if they did something similar to pvp and gave extremes, savages, and the like their own actions and abilities that were unique to higher end content that all the balancing could be focused on?

The only issue with old AST cards was that trannies shit themselves if they couldn't get enhanced Balance at every draw. So frick em, leave them in their sty with the current card system and let the rest of us have a fun, engaging job for the majority of the game's content.
i'd be fine with that but we'd need 6 real things the cards could affect. spell/skill speed is worthless to most classes, direct hit is just diet crit. mp is only a factor on healers and is basically a gauge for black mage, dark knight and paladin. TP doesn't exist any more.
so you'd have % dps up, % damage taken down, haste (which doesn't help most classes), crit, mp regen and something else for spire.
there is a problem with substats in general in the game. they really don't matter, as the only stats that actually affect anything are weapon damage, main stat and maybe skill speed/spell speed on some classes. the differences have to exist though, else there's no difference between tome gear, raid gear and crafted gear.
the boring gear is actually a solution to the infinite gear treadmill that some other mmos suffer from. sure its not as engaging or long lasting, but it ends. don't need to wait for a thunderforged, primal ancient, super mega ultra deluxe version to hit the RNG lottery. and there's no gear that every single person wants, like enormous stat sticks in usually empty slots, or in the case of worlo, trinkets.
A random % damage reduction is too unreliable to ever be of use. Also Exaltation already does that on a consistent 1min cooldown for when your tanks need a hand.
Free haste otoh is god on black mage.

i disagree. banning GDKP is heavy handed and also a false solution to what is actually ailing the game mode. GDKP existed as far back as the original TBC from my own experience and is just a form of player engagement.

For me I just stopped playing after finishing Endwalker. There was a lot of smaller shit unanswered, but the main story is done, which means I am too.
This happens every single bi-year: The game is in a slump with an expansion on the rise, people are playing other games. And every time an expansion releases it breaks new sales records. They decided from an early point to keep to a strict schedule for updates and expansions, purposefully so you dont feel you need to log on every day and its quick to catch up again.
I fricking hate FF14 for what they did to Scholar, but this is just clickbait.

Shadowbringers was the high point of the game in terms of story/casual draw. At the same time, Blizzard shat the bed really, really fricking hard and wowgays finally took a look at the nearest wow-like in droves as streamers jumped on the bandwagon. Finally, covid hit and everyone had more time for games and online socializing than before. It was a perfect storm that was a chance for XIV to really cement itself as the new top dog, but XIV just kept doing what it always did. The gameplay for the last few xpacs has been too simple for anyone to stick around just for that, and the main story arc is now completely over. The story is 'done', despite how hard they've been trying to say otherwise since ShB blew up.
But I think the biggest issue is that much of the longtime playerbase has just gotten fed up with the lack of change in design philosophy. Shit like 'there shouldn't be much of a performance difference between low and high skill players', 'this new class rework/adjustment is gonna be huge' only for it to be shit like putting one or two oGCDs on the GCD, and the ever present quality issues like WoL standing there nodding/doing nothing while someone gets killed in front of them or the fact that it took like 4 xpacs to get a proper unsheathe animation. Wowgays churned through the content and left, while Endwalker just gave everyone else a good point to bow out at.

Dumb devs. The two most popular expansions were Heavensward and Shadowbringers because they had lots of fun shit to do. Endwalker had some okay moments but overall had way less momentum than Shadowbringers and the new expansion looks like a complete regression. I don't know anyone that is excited for it.

The end result was that after Endwalker launched, the patch cycles were completely fricking barren and empty. People got bored, and they quit. This is what happens when you spread your resources too thin. XVI was a good game but not good enough to warrant shooting XIV in the foot. Reap what you sow, etc... I sincerely doubt Dawntrail will be pulling people back too. The new jobs look mediocre and the story and setting look awful and they are shilling Krile, a character literally nobody likes. They've gone full moron. I've hoped this wouldn't happen, but it unfortunately did.

Its all about integrity. Modders use shit that doesn't fit in the current setting. When they started introducing more modern looking clothes (the schoolgirl one with the bow tie) it reminded people of modders and their blatant disregard of consistency.
Honestly, if the devs decided to introduce a glamour toggle to the gamre it'd shut the complainers up. But since XIV is less technologically advanced than XI then there isn't a chance of that being implemented.
XIV ARR and the arc that ended with Endwalker should've been the end of FFXIV as a whole because it's built on a shoddy foundation. Instead, SqEnix got complacent and they're gonna try to milk this shit for another ten years.
What they need to do is create a new MMO from scratch with YoshiP at the helm. ARR isn't good enough to be Square Enix' WoW but it was enough to salvage a broken product and save the company from bankruptcy.

I need to be honest that I dropped FFXIV right after I finished Heavensward. I just felt like I experienced everything the game had to offer and it wasn't going to top it. I watched streamers play and saw that the story is elongated and cringe, the characters are fricking boring, classes are boring, etc. It went viral during that covid summer, but it wasn't a good enough game to keep the momentum. I hate say it, but it's the truth.

I don't think it "failed". A lot of people play it still (presumably because they like it), and it makes loads of money. But I think Endwalker definitely was bad, from day one even. The servers at expac launch were fricking awful. 10k player queues where you got booted to the back of the line if the very common server instability DCd your ass. And it only got worse from there. Rampant plugin use due to the limp wrist devs not doing anything meant that end game raids got trivialized by cheat plugins, and casuals flooded in with unironic IMVU tier cosmetic mods. The meme of the game being second life became reality. The content cycle got delayed by about one month per patch, probably so daddy SE can get their summer release schedule back (which still might not happen lmao). This delay was promised to come with more content in the patches but we got the same amount of content as prior expansions, but this time they even had less replayability. The game utterly hollowed out the gameplay experience for anyone that isn't some ERPing coomer, or an autist obsessed with the 20 minute long simon says ultimate raids. Games especially shit now. But shit is popular with morons, so I guess it's a "success"
mods existed before endwalker, server queues stared during shadowbringers because of WoW dying, and try looking up stormblood's launch if you want to see a real fricking problem as instance servers completely broke because everyone had to to a solo duty early in the MSQ

The server instability of HW, and the SB raubahn and susano shit weren't nearly as soul crushing as getting afk kicked into a 10k player queue that will take literally 6 hours of babysitting because you get lobby errors and get bumped to the back and need to constantly relog.

For the highest end logs are completely useless. Anyone can get a 99 or 100 killing the fight enough times, and they'll be damn consistent at it after so many kills. But that gives you 0 clues about how good they are in prog. You actually have to get lucky.

My DC primal use to have a good amount of PF groups but everything has consolidated on Aether it is getting old having to DC travel to Aether to play the game. Then having to logoff every hour to send my retainers out. Like come the frick on, cross DC PF is a must at this point. Along with gross DC roulettes.

Tbh I had massive amounts of fun with it in 2017, but I just stopped playing entirely a year ago. I used to pay my sub only to keep my house, once I realized I'm probably not going back except for MSQ/the first month of the xpacs it didn't matter.
Cool game, but there's a general lack of midcore/hardcore content to progress, most of the casual playerbase feels entitled to own everything that the hardcore playerbase does without putting much effort (eg same ilvl), trying to progress on raids or even trials with other 7 monkeys through PF is most likely a complete waste of time, especially if you miss the time window where the actual players are progressing, like the first 3 to 4 days the content drops.
I agree. Its on the level of wow for me so buy the expansion and then sub on the last month of the expansion to play all the content
