Harsh, but it reflects how people felt.
Mario was already a popular character and Crash had a cartoonish appeal, and their games belonged to a popular genre. An androgynous clown flying around rings with no enemies around was something that an audience made mainly of young boys wouldn't care about.
As an adult, I don't really have a problem with playing a game like Nights, I just don't think it looked too appealing for young boys, who were Sega's main audience.
They should have made a big Sonic game before even start working in personal projects.
This is so damn true bestie. The aesthetic of the game is incredible, but if the gameplay is on the level of Atari 2600 games, what's the point? Also who is the main character supposed to appeal to in 1996, nobody.
those were usually acceptable on playstation. sure they were better on saturn, but not enough to buy a brand new console for a game you could get a slightly worse version of on a console you already own.
Nobody outside of Japan has ever given a single shit about Virtua Fighter.
As a kid, I didn't realize there were more to play because my score was so bad. I took too much time admiring the background and didn't understand the concept of urgency at the time. At least the stage music was comfy to listen to
I think its more that Nights came and went the same way Crash 1 and Mario 64 came and went. Nights was popular for a bit and then people moved on, they needed to keep making sequals for the game to get noticed on the shelf just like if they stopped at Crash 1 then it would have been quickly forgotten. I got my N64 later I couldn't even find Mario 64 to buy anywhere so just started with Banjo Kazooie.
I think the whole play the level many times to get a better rating may have people off at the time but I have personally never seem it but it is pretty for games today.
N64 was seen as a flop despite mario.
It's not bad, but it still baffles me that Sonic Team worked on THIS instead of, you know, a proper 3D title for the character that helped them so much in the west, that should've the main priority by far and instead they gave the most important task in all of SEGA then to STI with a team that was never going to pull it off, what a mess. Nights is fine enough though.
Sega has a game engine and everything in Sonic R, change a few things around and its a platform game. I think sonic was seen as yesterdays fad at the time though before SA revived it, I specifically remember someone saying wow people still play sonic when I tried the demo of sonic 3d on a public computer.
>develop NiGHTS as an arcade title >use the superior Model 2 hardware >stronger graphical hardware allows them to double down on the appeal of the surreal, dreamlike settings >release dedicated immersive rear projection cab setups to go with it, or even a dark sit-in model like that one style of Lost World >Saturn release is just a port of the above, or better yet a sequel
In an ideal world...
Also sega America didn't care about shooters or jarpigs or artistic games, they wanted the chad sport players.
>gamers
neo-lingo I never called myself a "gamer". I prefer more actually retro terms like gamemaniac.
Also I chose Super Mario 64, NiGHTS and Jumping Flash back then, never liked Crash much though I had Crash 2, gave it the same amount of attention It's give other western platformers - not much.
Yeah it's pretty ubique. Only first person game to have gotten platforming right, even to this day.
Also check out Ghost in the Shell on ps1, same developers.
honest to God man, flying through rings for score barely qualifies as a game these days, its like the shit that comes prepackaged on your cell phone. That's why Sega failed. This isn't a game. Its just a demonstration.
It’s incredible how good this fricking DOOM MOD is. I consider myself a sega fan, but I genuinely believe they were always moronic and just got lucky on occasion plus yu Suzuki and AM2 in general were absolute savants for a substantial run, some of the best game developers period. But sega is actually so fricking moronic and the meme that fans know better than sega do is not even a meme it’s just a sad reality. I’m positive if they hired fans (HIRE FANS!!!!) and gave them a quarter of the budget they’re giving all these “IP revivals” the fans would put out absolute classics. Instead we’re gonna get live service goyslop that tarnishes these series even further.

>THESE GAMES PEOPLE SAID ARE BAD ARE ACTUALLY GOOD >he calls most of the games featured in it either mediocre or agrees on them being bad
Behead all retro youtubers
It's clickbait, he agrees that most of them are bad, one or two just okay and says he enjoyed two others.
The title should be something like "I checked out 17 "terrible games" to see if they really are that bad", but that's not as clickbaity as what he did. I maker sure to never subscribe to anybody that does this clickbait shit, uses ai images for their cover and a few other tell tale signs of bullshit.
theres this youtuber who literally has like 5 prerecorded clips that he replays a million times in between showing AI generated pics while doing an overenunciated voiceover for like 10 minutes
Because this is an arcade time attack game. Nobody wants that shit.
And while the visuals may be 3D, the gameplay itself is entirely 2D. People noticed.
>Because this is an arcade time attack game. Nobody wants that shit.
Yet people turn other genres into arcade time attack games by speedrunning them nowadays. Curious.
>develop NiGHTS as an arcade title >use the superior Model 2 hardware >stronger graphical hardware allows them to double down on the appeal of the surreal, dreamlike settings >release dedicated immersive rear projection cab setups to go with it, or even a dark sit-in model like that one style of Lost World >Saturn release is just a port of the above, or better yet a sequel

i think it takes a while to get used to but once you do it's okay. not great. i could see how this may have been some remote attempt to improve on the basic gameplay of sanic. but sega was at peak moronation around this time.
I always see obscure shit on here and wonder who actually had it and how weird it would have been to have owned it. But I had a Saturn and the copy of Knights that came with the 3-D controller and that's fairly uncommon.
I think the big issue with Nights Into Dreams is that it feels like an arcade port of a game that was never released for arcades. It's a game like LA Machineguns where you play it for the initial spectacle at the arcade, then slowly start to realize there's more depth under the surface.
I think most people who bought it were expecting something more along the lines of a mascot platformer.
When I was a kid I fantasized about this and panzer constantly. I had psx and N64 but Sega Saturn had a very other worldly feel. Nights especialy revved my imagination like nothing else. I imagines it was like an entire game with wingcap Mario. Sadly even though I can emulate it I feel emulation can never capture the real feel
Never consciously realized it but since you brought it up, yeah, I got that feeling too. And isn't the Saturn really hard to emulate? Almost like it's alien technology or something.
Never consciously realized it but since you brought it up, yeah, I got that feeling too. And isn't the Saturn really hard to emulate? Almost like it's alien technology or something.
oh please saturn has been perfectly emulatable for years
nights does benefit from the special saturn controller tho
Because the game might look impressive as hell, but gameplay wise, is a completely linear game with zero replayability value.
With Mario you always could explore every nook and corner of the game while Crash gave you a certain degree of freedom that Nights lacked.
I find this incredibly awkward to control on the Steam version with a Xbox 360 controller. Is there just something wrong with the port/setup, or was this how the original game performed? I was under the impression that this game came with the fancy 360° Saturn gamepad and so there were more degrees of control, while my setup seems locked to just 8-way movement. But I never had a Saturn, much less the original NiGHTS game, so I'm always wondering how much I'm missing out on.
People wanted to interact with actual worlds instead of flying a troony clown through rings
This is the funniest thing I've read today, thank you anon
Crash was arguably just as linear.
Dude, that game literally had 2d stages.
Harsh, but it reflects how people felt.
Mario was already a popular character and Crash had a cartoonish appeal, and their games belonged to a popular genre. An androgynous clown flying around rings with no enemies around was something that an audience made mainly of young boys wouldn't care about.
I've always thought Pac-Man World found a good middleground between a platformer with exploration and a linear platformer.
I.. actually wanted a Saturn just for this... I'm actually lucky my parents got me an N64, instead. I don't know why I was so gay as a kid ..
just means you weren't bullied too much (enough?).
As an adult, I don't really have a problem with playing a game like Nights, I just don't think it looked too appealing for young boys, who were Sega's main audience.
They should have made a big Sonic game before even start working in personal projects.
KEK, why did Sega market this like it was an epic answer to Mario 64?;
SoJ thought it was a system seller and the Saturn's new mascot.
This is so damn true bestie. The aesthetic of the game is incredible, but if the gameplay is on the level of Atari 2600 games, what's the point? Also who is the main character supposed to appeal to in 1996, nobody.
It came out very late when everyone already realized that Saturn lost, so few people had it and even fewer people wanted to buy it.
What about all the Japanese Fighter Enjoyers?
those were usually acceptable on playstation. sure they were better on saturn, but not enough to buy a brand new console for a game you could get a slightly worse version of on a console you already own.
Nobody outside of Japan has ever given a single shit about Virtua Fighter.
Bummer, I was hoping to give some classic fighters a shot. (I tend to only play platformers and shooters)
Because virtual ring toss games get boring after about 10 minutes?
Nights is a platformer?
As a kid, I didn't realize there were more to play because my score was so bad. I took too much time admiring the background and didn't understand the concept of urgency at the time. At least the stage music was comfy to listen to
Why would they buy games for consoles they didn't own?
Because it has 7 levels
Should've been an arcade game
bump
People didn't want to play 3D games with meshes.
>People didn't want to play 3D games with meshes.
Meshes that would have been a transparency on a CRT.
Especially with composite, which most people won't even notice.
Maybe if you're myopic.
>only somewhat decent game on saturn
>sega fans act like its the second coming
>Mario
Because mario.
>Crash
Because it's a bit more linear as far as 3d platforming goes?
I think its more that Nights came and went the same way Crash 1 and Mario 64 came and went. >sequal
God, you are so fricking illiterate.
>gamers

I fricking LOVE Jumping Flash!!!! It's a nice blend between shooting and platforming.
So was Jumping Flash in a way, and that game kicks major ASS.
Nights feels like it should be a bonus stage in a much bigger Sonic game.
Like Sonic Xtreme...
Xtreme was always going to be trash
Yep, SRB2 had the right idea in doing this
It’s incredible how good this fricking DOOM MOD is. First time I played this game I felt trolled.
I've actually never played it before, so you may-or-may-not have done me a solid.
extremely unappealing and homosexual art style
It's not bad, but it still baffles me that Sonic Team worked on THIS instead of, you know, a proper 3D title for the character that helped them so much in the west, that should've the main priority by far and instead they gave the most important task in all of SEGA then to STI with a team that was never going to pull it off, what a mess. >still no proper standalone rerelease
I fricking hate Sega AM2
What about the PS3 port?
what if we...reskinned superman64. sure this will sell the sega sadturd
OK PSX elitist.
Nice try, Aussie Bogan.
>Superman 64 is LE BAD
You were LIED too.
It's FUARKing KINO.
>Quest 64
The buyer's remorse cope is real
>st1ka

Suck my dick it's still bad.
He said it's bad in that video, homosexual.
quest 64 isnt bad. its extremely barebones, but theres nothing advertently terrible about it
Because this is an arcade time attack game. Nobody wants that shit.

speedrunning is niche as frick

I've never played this and I'm sure it's a great game but man that looks so fricking gay
NiGHTS is pure art
Those stages really look amazing
Shame the gameplay looks lame
And the gameplay is boring within 10 minutes.
Seriously, look at it. It's like Yuji Naka whole idea was 'what if I stretched a sonic bonus stage out into a full game?'
Proof that Sonic fans are infinitely smarter than anyone at Sega.
I always see obscure shit on here and wonder who actually had it and how weird it would have been to have owned it. But I had a Saturn and the copy of Knights that came with the 3-D controller and that's fairly uncommon.

Nights was not.

Because Nights is overrated garbage?
I never played it except for a little bit at a store display, what did it have going for it besides graphics?
When I was a kid I fantasized about this and panzer constantly. I had psx and N64 but Sega Saturn had a very other worldly feel. Nights especialy revved my imagination like nothing else. Lmao saying a arcade scoring game has 0 replay value
Reminder that Yuji Naka refused to let SoA use the nights engine for sonic x-treme, threatening to quit his job over it.
i tried to play it at a museum exhibit but it froze and the Saturn was locked in a case

always check the pc gaming wiki
I think Nights is a good design.
I think its great, it has those old magic Sega physics that fulfill what the game is clearly striving for...
making you feel like you're flying through a dream
