With old Valve games you get to jump between servers freely and the only real "ban" you can get is a VAC ban. With modern games it's all centralized servers and one code of conduct so if you're a bad goy you lose $60 and can't play anymore

this is also why communities don't really form anymore, matchmaking means you don't really have a 'home' server that you spend most of your gametime in, thus you never encounter the same people unless the playerbase is extremely small. Dedicated servers meant you were likely to meet the same people repeatedly and eventually form some kind of connection, whether it be a butthurt rivalry or comradery
I know someone will probably say otherwise but a discord server or a subreddit isn't the same thing, it's a giant ocean of anonymous strangers that will continue to be anonymous strangers unless you actively bug people to add you. It's much less natural than just "showing up" at a server and seeing familiar faces that you gradually get to know. It's forced in the same way a mandatory pen pal exercise in middle school is forced.

griefing and saying whatever you want outside of threats because I'm not being pulled into court cases will be allowed in my game. I'll be telling the players to simply use the ignore function and crying about anything someone says won't be listened to by me because there's a one second action that handles it. Every now and then I will probably jump on while pretending to be a player and chase any urban thugs off of my own game (unless they are spending money of course.) I will scare them off the internet completely because there won't be any repercussions for whatever I say obviously. I can't wait for that. I will be the strangest dev to ever manage his own game. I might frick with them and shut the servers down for a brief amount of time at various intervals throughout the year to keep them urging to play the game to keep that dopamine chase going. this is also why communities don't really form anymore, matchmaking means you don't really have a 'home' server that you spend most of your gametime in, thus you never encounter the same people unless the playerbase is extremely small. Dedicated servers meant you were likely to meet the same people repeatedly and eventually form some kind of connection, whether it be a butthurt rivalry or comradery
I know someone will probably say otherwise but a discord server or a subreddit isn't the same thing, it's a giant ocean of anonymous strangers that will continue to be anonymous strangers unless you actively bug people to add you. It's much less natural than just "showing up" at a server and seeing familiar faces that you gradually get to know. It's forced in the same way a mandatory pen pal exercise in middle school is forced.

Actually hopped on some basic Minecraft server hosting places with open public servers just today to grief, they were all pluginfests and you could report people and get them banned off the platform, sucks.

griefing and saying whatever you want outside of threats because I'm not being pulled into court cases will be allowed in my game. I'll be telling the players to simply use the ignore function and crying about anything someone says won't be listened to by me because there's a one second action that handles it. Every now and then I will probably jump on while pretending to be a player and chase any urban thugs off of my own game (unless they are spending money of course.) I will scare them off the internet completely because there won't be any repercussions for whatever I say obviously. I can't wait for that. I will be the strangest dev to ever manage his own game. I might frick with them and shut the servers down for a brief amount of time at various intervals throughout the year to keep them urging to play the game to keep that dopamine chase going. I'll just say a hotfix is on its way!! maybe I'll get a harem of female players following me everywhere and I'll drop them some promo codes every now and then for the feminine cosmetics to keep them on my leash. the possibilities are endless for me. I will also absolutely sell the game to some actual israelites for the right price.

games started getting moderated by bots that cared more about amount of reports rather than actual cases themselves. in thr older games someone could easily see that some shithead kid is getting trolled, but in newer games the bot just sees a large number of repts and will auto-ban
