Anytime there was talk of "good Vita games" it was mentioned.
1 is a twin stick shooter which are less popular than 3rd person. 3rd person brings the action closer, makes it more intimate, and when you combine that with Helldivers relying on chaos to carry the presentation of gameplay, it's just a cool thing. Helldivers 1 had like no marketing, advertising, and was a ps3 game which was the undersold and underplayed console that gen. Then it was also on the vita, and there's people on Ganker right now who have no knowledge that the vita even existed.
Also, name a new coop-focused game that's come out in 2024, there's hardly anything new to play with the bois.

Third Person Shooter on PS5 + PC with decent graphics appeals to more people than Isometric shooter on PS4 + Vita with basic graphics
it was an AA production at best for a niche genre with weird game design aspects
in many ways helldivers 2 is an excellent development of everything they experimented with in helldivers 1, and they made a lot of hard but well justified cuts to achieve that. and it also is AAA quality despite probably having been made for half the budget of a typical AAA game. mind you these same people were making goofy magicka games like a decade ago

Most didn't know anything about the game even a few weeks before launch. We didn't even have pre-release reviews or nerd streamer efforts. There was basically no marketing at all as the dev thought it would be an indie level release..

It was a relatively small indie game in a genre that isn't terribly popular. Also the shared screen was annoying.

1 was a 2.5D game. 3D is just better.
