If it was an actual reboot it wouldn't have shoved gen 1-4 mons into the postgame and it wouldn't have just made the villains diet team rocket. Universal problem with pokemon, and Gen 5's "plot" is way, way worse. Gen 2's actually makes sense because it's a sequel to gen 1 where the remnants of Team Rocket are trying to revive their organization and bring their boss back, which is made even better in HGSS with the Spiky Eared Pichu event.

I was underwhelmed by HGSS and lost my DS, so I wasn't following Pokemon at the time of its release
I was told about it and insisted that I give it a shot, so I looked at the dex to plan my team, and sneakingly found myself struggling to compose one I'd like
then I get to playing it and it's just one drag after another; it got to the point where I didn't even want to finish it, so I was setting it down and not touching it now and then; though I did eventually finish it
it was hard to put into words exactly why I disdained the experience of playing BW so much at the time, and I'm sure millions of other people felt the same way, if they were even aware it existed at the time (which I wasn't until, again, somebody told me)
but BW was just ugly and tedious compared to past Pokemon games; that's why it flopped

It released right after the best games in the franchise, HGSS, and had to live up to them. It failed, miserably. and was the sharp drop off a steep cliff that started the decline of the franchise.

Natdex is a non-issue since at least 90% of the natdex is shitmon filler anyway, I give zero fricks about sentret or ratatta coming back, in fact if I were to make my own dex it wouldn't be more than around 200 pokemon at most.

It's very interesting that if you look at the 30th place, BW ranks third highest after Kanto and Galar.
This is despite having the largest Dex, which should be lowering that number.
What that means is that BW actually has a very consistent Dex, possibly with lower peaks.
I don't even care to talk about some kind of dickwaving contest between regions here, that's just something I took note of last time I saw this posted (Yesterday)

I’m tired of XY taking all the heat for the downfall of the franchise just for being in 3D. These games were the first to show me every pokemon’s ass in full display as if I was asking for it. One thing I will say though is the inhaler-like sound effect whem selecting moves on the DS sounds futuristic as hell.

Because the 3DS was already out by the time BW released outside of Japan, so only diehard fans were in a position to care about the game because it was now "old news for an old handheld". More casual Pokemon consumers were waiting for the 3DS entries, driven by interest in if Pokemon would finally make the leap to 3D now that there was a platform powerful enough for something that'd allow the 3D to look good.
This is also why normalgays who were kids during Pokemania but subsequently bailed from Pokemon as soon as it stopped being popular crawled out of the woodworks to start shitting on the current state of the franchise, because now it was a "franchise for the weirdos we had fun bullying to keep our own reputations intact."
