Octopath Traveler 1 had some good stuff but it also had a lot of issues that disappointed some people. Octopath Traveler 2 is just more of the same stuff with none of the issues fixed so people disappointed by the first game didn't buy it.

It fixes most of the major issues the first game had. Its a spectacular sequel.

8 formulaic dogshit storylines, even more braindead combat and lower difficulty overall with the only superboss being reused from the first game

The stories were pretty decent, anon.

The world is kind of somewhat even more open than OT1's map. And the game doesn't level scale.
Dungeon bosses can be really rough. The same is true for story bosses too though if you just don't shy away from them.

The big improvement is how much more the characters interact and connect with each other though.
                And the storylines are cool.

If you thought the stories were decent I won't argue against that but if they end up making a third game I hope they hire different writers before then

1 was boring and set expectation

I didn't finish it, but I was immediately disappointed in the fact that so much of the old structure was reused. Especially the classes.

None of the characters really grabbed me, not that the first was great either. And I wasn't hooked on any of the music.

I dunno it wasn't bad but I got what I needed out of 1

It's a shame, I think this time around the characters are memorable. Ochette is top tier cute, Partitio is a charming and affable character, Tenemos has his whole detective vibe going on. The only weak one for me is Agnea but she's still a very sweet character.

The novelty of an original IP wore off, OT1 had the advantage of being fully new so people didn't exactly know what to expect, the premise of a mix of FF5 and Romancing SaGa enticed both audiences even if the game ultimately failed to cater to both of them.
The second game being reportedly just more of the same further reduced the original audience size and left only those who actually liked the first entry and minor part of newcomers.
Basically OT1 was mostly a marketing fluke, OT2 is more representative of the actual success of the IP, though I wouldn't be surprised if a further installment would have even lower sales numbers than OT2, the core audiences for these kind of games are always very small, and OT being kind of a directionless hybrid of two older square IPs puts it in an awkward position.

Multiplat release so no marketing from Nintendo.

Sloptopath Troughler was bad, and we didn't need a second one to get even more bored with the garbage battle system. Break/Stagger mechanics are a joke and are a sign that the developer doesn't trust that players will be able to figure out elemental matchup shit on their own, without literally being forced to engage with it.
That's a sign that the elemental matchup systems don't need to be in the game at all btw, but that's a completely different discussion.

OT1 was a shiny new exclusive to the shiny new Switch. That's where almost all the success came from

Because both games are bad and the first one only sold because "omg it looks like muh SNES final fantasy games!", ignoring that the decline of final fantasy was due to dogshit writers, not moving past sprite artwork (as is made obvious by the fact that FF didn't fall off until the Enix merger and the PS2)

Because the only reason people played the original game was to justify their purchase of a console during a desert of games. They didn't actually enjoy it and didn't look into the sequel.

it still suffered from the same problems OT1s combat had, where you just get way too OP way too fast. great cast compared to the first one though
    also not enough Ochette toes

It seriously lacks the Quality of LIfe mechanics in Bravely Default. If there was a sequel that marketed from the start that you can speed up battles, change the battle spawn rate anytime and better jobs for the cheese strats, that would sell like hotcakes. Even BD2 got good sales despite being mid because players knew what kind of game-play were expecting.

I was blown away by the sheer amount of QoL in Bravely Default, as well as explaining in detail game mechanics, % chances of things working, and what buffs/debuffs stack and which don't. More JRPGs need that.

that is true. In BD you just need to scan the enemy and it will instantly tell you most of the info you need to make up a strategy. In octopath, even with the scholar skills, you have to face the enemy multiple times to get a roughly moveset and stats, which defeats the purpose of analyzing the enemy in the first place, the player can only spam shit on the first encounters.

ah yes, having to cast spell to the enemy that normally would be affected in other games and this one does not because the devs put the weakness at random sure feels like strategizing.
