Used a guide or your natural smarts and game knowledge? I think I put in 40hrs in Etrian Odyssey IV 3DS and only got to the 3rd stratum. I loved it, but it was going on for too long.

I really liked EO3 with the mod, got somewhere around the third stratum with the broken glass cannon builds and lost interest for now, but I really don't think this sort of game works on a desktop/PC for most people. It's best on handheld to kill time.

So the Labyrinth series combat is braindead? What about Etrian? I have spent more time doing autobattling (or just mashing the OK button for attacking even with the healer/mages) in Etrian than in Labyrinth. Now, let's say that Labyrinth games actually have sleeper combat and somehow say that Etrian is not sleeper.
Labyrinth series allows me to grind in optimal ways that are engaging with the exponential EXP stacking and moving from floor to floor with tricks like destroying walls. It allows me to teleport and come back to the same spot I was on quickly. It allows me to quickly level up characters that are not even in combat just in case I want to switch things if I frick up with a build. As you mentioned, it has good presentation and a surprisingly good story in both games. Both games have hard encounters that reward the player who creates a good party composition.
I don't think that Labryinth is the "golden standard" but it's definetly a hundred times better than Etrian is. Notice how the only thing everyone here say as a counter argument is "you are bad".
I am sorry that you guys think that Etrian is hard, it is but not because of combat or anything like that - but because it's hard as frick to WANT to finish the fricking game.

EO has all of those things in shortcuts, retiring, combat study. The only thing it doesnt is exp stacking which doesnt even matter since the only way you could be underleveled in the first place is if you recruited a brand new character halfway through, or repeatedly fricked up your builds and rested every other floor

I was having a lot of fun with EO3 as my first game, on Expert difficulty. I'm near the end of Stratum 3 and suddenly started losing steam. I think the gameplay loop just started to get old. My character builds are pretty much figured out so level ups aren't as exciting anymore and I'm strong enough that random encounters have become more annoying than threatening.
I might just stop here and take what good I can out of the experience rather than try to force myself to finish it.
i found that it picked up a bit at stratum 4 because of where you go, and those floors go by pretty quick and the 5th stratum has some fun map bullshit before the final stretch
bonus stratum is also awesome but your mileage may vary here
