Personally it reminds me of a more caricature oriented tale on Italian futurism as an art style which is kind of cool - but I think that's a very radical deviation from the original pixel art the game was known for.

Should have had more nudity of all the female characters as well. What's the point of making a game in Europe if you don't at least do French levels of fanservice.

Larry Laffer was a short-dicked midget with the ego the size of a planet who wanted to frick babes. That shit is inherently funny and you cheer for Larry even though he's a shitty guy simply because his goal seems so out of reach.
Nu-Larry (Laffer's nephew or some shit) is an average-dicked normal height guy with barely an ego to speak of and his dream is to lay pipe in some boring, middling as frick roasties. If you don't already see the disconnect then let me spell it the reason it doesn't work.
Seeing a midget in a leisure suit fighting an uphill battle towards getting his dick wet is funny, each rejection is expected and humorous because Larry being Larry you can see where the girls are coming from, which makes it all the sweeter when Laffer DOES occasionally get a small win. And we can sympathise in the same way as Donald Duck having a little good luck.
With nu-Larry what you get is this completely average man who gets shut down by women who in no way is out of his league, which is not funny. I don't think new has to be bad. Super Catboy has some amazing looking pixel art, Vanillaware do great modern 2D, and Arcsys have managed to make 3D look almost as good as high quality 2D.

I've only played SJ and Nocturne (i.e. no real shin megoomy tensay games), but I know that they have many differences from prior installments, and still have sizable followings and receive high praise.
Nocturne adding Press Turn and straying from strict Chaos/Neutral/Law alignments, Strange Journey wanting to be Etrian Odyssey instead, these are far from carbon copies of the originals. Not to mention SMT 1 lacking demon fusion, the core mechanic the series is known for.
While I'm here I'll also summarize the issue with Curse of Monkey Island, in that it was made as a continuation to the first two MIs without the involvement of the original creator, was at the time considered to retcon events from MI 2, and has a different artstyle for the series, yet sees a similar positive reputation as Nocturne does in SMT.

Fair enough (and nice save for spoiler no.2, though it somewhat invalidates the point). Mainline titles iterate when it comes to combat, fusion and so forth - spin-off titles such as the original Soul Hackers, DDS and if don't always do radical things with the gameplay, relying more on the plot, characters and themes to drive engagement, working with the solid base of what's already established with a gimmick or two to distinguish, typically. I'd personally argue that TMS and presumably Soul Hackers 2 fall into this category. So when I mentioned "only enjoying things if they're a carbon copy", I was largely referring to rather superficial readings of tone, art style, etc.
As a breakaway property in the west, the vast majority of people who played a title under the "SMT" umbrella back when it was a relative unknown would have played Nocturne (or Persona 3 or 4) to begin with. As such, when SMTIV released and had more akin to 1 and 2 in terms of setting and tone than 3, which was a radical departure, there was significant backlash from some corners. This has also led to many western fans decrying anything other than Nocturne and SJ as "not being real shin megoomy tensay" and anything where Kaneko isn't involved being irredeemable shit, the irony of which is palpable. We're getting the same logic with SH2 since it's not looking like a 1:1 of the original SH, which was clearly a product of its time as much as this one is. So as you sort of state with your Curse of Monkey Island explanation, maybe that's how SH2 will end up, for all we know - potentially more unique and better regarded than the original (or at least comparable/on par). Or maybe it'll be shit, we'll just have to wait and see. The proof is in the pudding.
Also, if you've only played SJ and Nocturne, get/emulate Devil Survivor on the DS/3DS. Absolutely brilliant spin on tactics games.

I find the NPC defense missions an annoying chore so I may not beat it for a while still. I'm a mission or two after saving Midori and Haru and the game still feels like it's 'building up' to the good parts. It's the last of the three I've played in order of SJ > Nocturne > DS, probably not finishing it (whereas I beat the other two)
Also your essay was a good read, thanks. You should lower your hopes for SH2 being the equivalent Curse of MI, though, as Curse still plays much like a MI game (with some streamlining) while SH2 seems closer to new Personas instead.

It's not just the art, it's the animation. Guacamelee was animated smooth and you could tell that they were trying to make the most out of the style. This looks and feels like a downgrade of the SE-style art. Everything is jankier and lower-fidelity.

I never fully took to Deponia's style myself. Like everything else from Daedalic it felt like it was missing final polish to be it's own thing rather than a bargain bin indie title (looking at you Whispered World you fricking slog). Not to mention the German humour relying in Rufus being a terrible person, yet never finding time to actually give him some likeable traits too.
Should have had more nudity of all the female characters as well. What's the point of making a game in Europe if you don't at least do French levels of fanservice.

Nu-Larry (Laffer's nephew or some shit) is an average-dicked normal height guy with barely an ego to speak of and his dream is to lay pipe in some boring, middling as frick roasties. If you don't already see the disconnect then let me spell it the reason it doesn't work.
Seeing a midget in a leisure suit fighting an uphill battle towards getting his dick wet is funny, each rejection is expected and humorous because Larry being Larry you can see where the girls are coming from, which makes it all the sweeter when Laffer DOES occasionally get a small win. And we can sympathise in the same way as Donald Duck having a little good luck.
With nu-Larry what you get is this completely average man who gets shut down by women who in no way is out of his league, which is not funny. Its just tragic and strangely mean-spirited that the devs thought the idea of a normal guy not getting any was a substitute for humour. Subsequently there's no reason to cheer for nu-Larry. He isn't a mess of self-denial and compensating for his looks with even more ridiculous charm like the real Larry, and he's not funny. Art s a huge factor for me. The game could be the best thing ever, but if I've gotta look at it for hours on end, I'm just not gonna bother.

I don't think new has to be bad. Super Catboy has some amazing looking pixel art, Vanillaware do great modern 2D, and Arcsys have managed to make 3D look almost as good as high quality 2D.

Honestly don't give a shit about Monkey Island, I just came here to talk about SMT and wind up morons. 3 certainly was a leap from 1 and 2; is that the only SMT title you enjoy? Pretty sad if so, there are a variety of titles out there, even if we're just talking mainline.

I've only played SJ and Nocturne (i.e. no real shin megoomy tensay games), but I know that they have many differences from prior installments, and still have sizable followings and receive high praise.
Nocturne adding Press Turn and straying from strict Chaos/Neutral/Law alignments, Strange Journey wanting to be Etrian Odyssey instead, these are far from carbon copies of the originals. Not to mention SMT 1 lacking demon fusion, the core mechanic the series is known for.
While I'm here I'll also summarize the issue with Curse of Monkey Island, in that it was made as a continuation to the first two MIs without the involvement of the original creator, was at the time considered to retcon events from MI 2, and has a different artstyle for the series, yet sees a similar positive reputation as Nocturne does in SMT.

Fair enough (and nice save for spoiler no.2, though it somewhat invalidates the point). Mainline titles iterate when it comes to combat, fusion and so forth - spin-off titles such as the original Soul Hackers, DDS and if don't always do radical things with the gameplay, relying more on the plot, characters and themes to drive engagement, working with the solid base of what's already established with a gimmick or two to distinguish, typically. I'd personally argue that TMS and presumably Soul Hackers 2 fall into this category. So when I mentioned "only enjoying things if they're a carbon copy", I was largely referring to rather superficial readings of tone, art style, etc.
As a breakaway property in the west, the vast majority of people who played a title under the "SMT" umbrella back when it was a relative unknown would have played Nocturne (or Persona 3 or 4) to begin with. As such, when SMTIV released and had more akin to 1 and 2 in terms of setting and tone than 3, which was a radical departure, there was significant backlash from some corners. This has also led to many western fans decrying anything other than Nocturne and SJ as "not being real shin megoomy tensay" and anything where Kaneko isn't involved being irredeemable shit, the irony of which is palpable. We're getting the same logic with SH2 since it's not looking like a 1:1 of the original SH, which was clearly a product of its time as much as this one is. So as you sort of state with your Curse of Monkey Island explanation, maybe that's how SH2 will end up, for all we know - potentially more unique and better regarded than the original (or at least comparable/on par). Or maybe it'll be shit, we'll just have to wait and see. The proof is in the pudding.
Also, if you've only played SJ and Nocturne, get/emulate Devil Survivor on the DS/3DS. Absolutely brilliant spin on tactics games.

I find the NPC defense missions an annoying chore so I may not beat it for a while still. I'm a mission or two after saving Midori and Haru and the game still feels like it's 'building up' to the good parts. It's the last of the three I've played in order of SJ > Nocturne > DS, probably not finishing it (whereas I beat the other two)
Also your essay was a good read, thanks. You should lower your hopes for SH2 being the equivalent Curse of MI, though, as Curse still plays much like a MI game (with some streamlining) while SH2 seems closer to new Personas instead.

It's not just the art, it's the animation. Guacamelee was animated smooth and you could tell that they were trying to make the most out of the style. This looks and feels like a downgrade of the SE-style art. Everything is jankier and lower-fidelity.
