I got multiple store apps installed. PC is the platform. I don't devote myself solely to Wal-Mart or Kroger.

EGS decided to use their money to sway developers for exclusivity rather than putting money into the platform itself to at least have the same features and functionality of Steam. Like every other competitor, every single one banked on exclusives instead of feature parity with Steam and look how they all ended up.

It takes more work, effort, and talent to compete with something truly offering a consumer friendly, widely customizable service instead of just keeping your games off steam and doing the bare minimum to have something of your own that runs them.

Timmy doesn't want or care about running a worthwhile service. He just wants to throw money at a problem till it goes away. If he did achieve feature parity with Steam and he defeated Steam, EGS would be expected to maintain all of those features it added or risk looking bad by removing features it only added to compete. If Timmy can do the absolute minimum on his platform and pay to hold back games from Steam, then if he beats Steam he can just maintain that minimum service and not have to spend any extra on maintaining a suite of features.

To me it seems like someone internally is scared shitless of Steam getting a pedophilia accusation. Their policy is no adult content featuring anyone in a school setting or with any indicators which could imply the subject being below the age of 18. Doesn't matter that it's drawn and they look like adults, Valve won't allow it

that is a 100% valid concern to have. Payment processors have been going wild swinging their weight around and forcing companies to clamp down on CP or anything pedophilic by revoking credit/debit support. Something like that would be a death sentence for steam

Theoretically how hard would it be to create a new payment processing service.
There is a lot of money in smut, and it seems like if you could manage to avoid anything outright illegal you could charge a higher processing fee, and milk the bux.

                Anonymous

it would be extremely hard because you have to play ball with banks. If you refuse to play with them and bend the knee to their every demand they simply wont let you exist. Its asking permission from people with infinite money who have no competitors and are accountable to no one. Infamous behavior of these banks is having a giant ass book of regulations that they selectively enforce entirely based on if some random guy in the system has a problem with you.

If you want an example kiwi farms managed to get blacklisted by every payment processor on earth because a bunch of mid level managers hated the site, blacklisted it, and when the admin went to ask why he just got stonewalled because banks answer to no one and care about no one except the big boys.

Even false accusations of CP or pedophilia with no evidence are enough to get blacklisted if youre a small fish. If you tried to make a payment processor for smut instantly you would get stonewalled at every level because people will instantly accuse you of creating it to facilitate the purchase and distribution of CP (which in all honestly it 100% would be after a short while even if you clamp down on that shit hard)

They failed to realize both Sony and brick and mortar stores enforce some kind of price parity, so they couldn't pass the savings on to customers like they said. They tried to get around this with the coupons and sales early on, but publishers threw a shitfit

I don't know about brick and mortar stores, but Sony's no favored nation clause seems to be based on if you can buy in game content from other places if it's crossplay, otherwise they don't seem too pissy otherwise (AW2 was $50 on EGS vs $60 on consoles), they might have it regarding consoles releases but idk.

They succeeded brilliantly, really. Timmy stated outright that they didn't give a shit about customers. His goal was to make a store that catered to the publishers and made them feel good and gave them money. He accomplished that.
Turns out though that publishers really like making not just money, but a lot of money, so in addition to the money they got from Tim, they kept selling on steam to make even more. So that plus, you know, not giving a shit about the customers(the people who actually buy and play games, or at least collect them.)

Generally speaking, the way to surpass a market leader is either to beat them at their own game, or to offer something truly new. Steam itself became a juggernaut by doing both things: it offered unbeatable discounts while making purchase, installation and update of games easier than pirating. Epic tried the first approach alone, with several free games and many good discounts and all, but it was nowhere near enough to overtake them. It's debatable whether it's possible to dislodge Steam's leadership with the first approach alone.

They didn't have an "orange box" product. Steam was reviled by Gen X aged CS and Half life fans, but when millenials poured in from TF2 and Portal, steam started taking off more.
Epic was just banking on shepherding teenagers, zoomers or alphas or whatever, with Fortnite and trying to get them to stick around. Unfortunately for them, they're a decade behind on just about every feature of the product, like chat, workshop, screenshot pages, and so forth (I don't know if they've rectified this, I haven't used epic launcher since paragons was a thing.)

Also the branding is straight dog diarrhea, Epic Game store sounds more synonymous with the ios store or google play store, not fricking steam.
