the gameplay is solid, the writing is actually decent. don't expect a masterclass novel, but it does a good job of establishing the world and getting you to enjoy the protagonists you're with the whole way
Honestly I wish we'd get more indie games based on series that the company that made them won't touch anymore. So many good IPs left in the dust because they didn't make a gorilion dollars.
Nintendo doesn't just drop games due to that, there's only one dictate, Miyamoto doesn't like when a game is similar to a previous game, if the game doesn't differentiate itself from the other in the series, it's not worth making.

1 is amazing. I had it on the gameboy pocket back in the day and beat it soooo many times its unreal. I would put it right at Super Mario Land 6 Golden Coins in terms of gameboy fun.
I never beat any others, but 2 was dope. Never tried 3 actually.

Metroid design philosophy. Some love it, some hate it. Wario Land 3 is the closest the franchise got to be a Metroid-like, with learning new moves to gain stronger, open more keys to previous eras to explore deeper parts of a level.

The series takes some time to pick up, which isn't good for turn based which is already kind of boring. Mother 3 was pretty good and the beat mechanic was at least an attempt to make it more interesting.
Quirky writing makes it easy to focus on the characters and story. And because the gameplay is boring there can be many ways to improve it, innovate it, or hell, just change the gameplay completely. There have been EB clones that do all 3 separately, and there's one that does all 3 at the same time.

I finally realised why I don’t like Pizza Tower’s change from Wariolike to Soniclike: its not a good soniclike. In Sonic you can blitz through a level and pick multiple paths, each provided a little leeway to account for their differences. Pizza Tower expects you to do the same single path perfectly. It ain’t fun

Is Wario Land 4 really distinctive enough to warrant clones? At the end of the day it's just a 2D platformer where you need to run back to the start of the level.
Antonblast is much more Virtual Boy Wario Land then Wario Land 4.
That said the WL4 aspects that Antonblast seems to have are the bonus rooms and the frog switch mechanic of backtracking to the start on a timer.
Play Virtual boy Wario Land by the way, has many elements I wished modern Wario Land would adopt. Only issue is there is only 14 levels (4 of them are just bosses, so really only 10)

I liked it. Expected PM gameplay, good music, writing was solid. I didn't think it tried too hard with the humor at all really.

I guess I'm just a brainlet but I tried 2/3/4 and liked them enough, but not nearly as much as 1.
2 onwards leans into the puzzle elements, which is what I personally prefer. But if you don't like that it makes sense to prefer 1.
Pizza tower feels more like Metroid with all that speed boost and block breaking, it even has the parry from SR and Dread tbh
