This along with a lack of attention span and desire to be entertained by the playerbase.
The average WoW player doesn't want "fun". They want the complete opposite, to suck every last drop of joy out of it until it is solved, farmed, and they have their trophy. Then they shelve it while talking about how bad it was in hindsight.
It's a job you pay money to go to.

honestly if you fixed the playerbase that is probably half the problems solved

its an online game where you are forced to play with mentally ill disgusting depressed passive-aggressive homosexuals

ffxiv has the right idea of making their mmo online-singleplayer because people that play mmos are absolutely awful these days

This. Each patch since day one did a little bit of damage to the game in some way, and here we are today in 2022 and it's basically beating a dead horse that has already rotted away at this point.

Playerbase friction. There is no agreement between the casual players, the hardcore players, the new players and the old ones on what is actually good game design. You'd think there is one objective right answer but it can't be applied to a game like WoW anymore with how much MMOs have changed and how much the playerbase has not changed

      mostly this
for every single decision blizzard makes 2 million people will vehemently love it and 2 million will vehemently hate it
      gaming has changed since 2004
the only way to solve that issue would be to go all in on either returning the game to its roots or completely cutting out the old core audience, neither of which blizzard seems willing to do so they just stay in this nebulous middle ground where the game isn’t quite an mmorpg any more but also isn’t just a completely modernized arcady game

an issue blizzard could solve though is getting better developers, the amount of bugs and issues with the game is just pathetic and it especially hurts considering just how high quality the game (and all of blizzards titles) used to be, unfortunately corporate greed and contempt slowly infected blizz to the point where now good devs don’t want to work there anymore

this plus data mining, all the hardcore players want to min-max and casuals can play super casually by just looking up shit online.
There is no playing the game left, someone already calculated all the best options and everyone plays the game on autopilot.

Naturally no one believes twitch viewership is a metric for quality or popularity overall - but within the genre of two directly competing games I've yet to see a good answer as to why the apparently more popular, better game consistently has 5-10x less viewers than WoW and only gets notable viewership when established WoW streamers play it.

This simple fact always ass blasts FFtards so hard

        Twitch ruined video games.

Video Games went from being about sustaining an enjoyable experience for hours, to leading up to a single or a couple payoffs designed to bait a Twitch Streamers reactions to a “reveal” or some such nonsense.

You get rid of the Asmongoloids and the Destiny’s of video gaming, you fix it as a whole.

Overemphasis on twitch is just a marketing misalignment on the part of the publishers.
It's not actually that important and can be safely ignored by devs & players.

        >story doesn't matter in an MMO
correct. MMOs take place in a persistent world, therefore any and all story events must always end with the world returning to the status quo. this, in turn, leads to weak villains and a loss of emotional investment from the audience
        >music doesn't mater in an MMO
correct. the expansive nature of MMOs requires the soundtrack to have a massive number of different tracks, and because no mass-produced product will ever be known for its quality, the best case scenario will be one or two stand-out pieces amidst an ocean of forgettable garbage
        >characters don't matter in an MMO
correct. due to the nature of patch cycles, the story in any MMO is delivered in bite-sized pieces over the course of months. the audience will often fill in the blanks of character traits and motivations, forcing writers to continuously warp a character's traits and motivations to suit what the audience expects rather than what the author intends
        >lore doesn't matter in an MMO
correct. much like capeshit, MMOs often change out writing staff every few years. remarkably few of those new staff members will have comprehensive knowledge of the game's lore, much less the previous writing team's intentions. this, in turn, leads to the lore aping established mythologies and belief systems.
        >content doesn't matter in an MMO
incorrect. content is ALL that matters in an MMO. not only will second-to-second gameplay always be weak compared to any other game of the same generation due to the "massively multiplayer" element of the genre, but the entire appeal of the genre at this point in time is the continuous drip-feed of content. MMOs are no longer the primary means of socializing online, and online games are now commonplace
        >community
every online community is full of shitheads. no exceptions.

Wasn’t classic tbc also having a tank scarcity for this very reason? People that wanted tanks to pull huge trash mobs so they can aoe them down and if the tank was unable to hold aggro they’d be flamed and booted out of the party.

Yeah. The community is the reason for the tank shortage because they're buttholes to tanks that aren't raid geared and flawless. But they will never play tank themselves. It's a weird autistic entitlement culture from the crusty and angry middle aged incels still playing WoW.

It put the money target on Blizzard’s back.
If not for this single game, the industry would look radically different, and better. Blizzard would still be making amazing games, which other people would copy ad infinitum, creating whole new genres like the moba genre.

Instead, you bought. 50 dollar, 15 dollars a month + micro transaction piece of shit because of how fun it was to be an orc and wander around Thunderbluff. You killed the market, and you killed blizzard. When they fell and everyone tried to make a “wow killer”, the entire hobby was lost.

Not even Pokémon and Halo did the damage this game did. Of course, I never loved those franchises.

    Shitposting and Gankerhomosexualry aside-
WoW "died" because it constantly and continuously pandered to casual homosexuals and kept making the game easier and easier and more streamlined. Every expac made the game simpler and more straight-forward in one way or another, and with Activi$ion at the helm, they steered away from making a fun RPG and instead designed the game to maximize player-interaction metrics and ingame cash shop purchasing.
The lore keeps getting more and more moronic fanfiction-tier with every expac. It was already pretty dumb by post-Cata but now it's just pants-on-head moronic.
The only reason WoW hasn't died yet is because nothing has come along that outshines it in enough ways. FF14 is close but still has plenty of annoying flaws of its own.

But anon, the game is shit for casuals. You need to spend roughly 4 hours a day grinding content to do any of the fun endgame content, even just fun normal raids or (non-plus) mythic dungeons. People that have maybe 4 hours on weekends to play games with are expected to grind every single day, multiple avenues of content. It's a bad game for casuals and it's a bad game for hardcore players.

And FF14 is shit because again, you need to invest half your life just to finish the story. Personally, I couldn't stop vomiting past the UI long enough to make it very far.

you saw it in classic too, game becomes transactional
shitloads of people buy gold and participate in gdkp, its crazy
people want purples and they want them now, the average wow player is now in his 30s, has a job, family and no time to roll on loot
so they buy everything with their additional income, its not about community, gameplay or anything else but purples
there are guilds that come only together to speedrun a raid and want to have nothing to do with each other for the rest of the week until they log in on raid day again

      >it constantly and continuously pandered to casual homosexuals
moronic surface level observation. WoW was ruined because the creative leads were replaced with sweaty le hardcore homosexuals who didn't pander to the casual player enough. With the expansions, the majority of the effort was put into a part of the game that the vast majority of the playerbase would never see, so they gradually made the rest of the game easier and easier to usher characters to endgame faster. This has snowballed into the overcomplicated immersion-destroying nothing-game we have today. Current WoW is designed for people levelling their 50th alt, not the fricking casual player.

The irony is that the game is awful for casuals. No one likes participation awards in form of lfr, catch ups etc. It denies any progress and feeling of accomplishment and leads to WoW being this very short, seasonal thing with expiry date looming over the horizon, where you either pump hard from day 1 every single week and burn out to RNG or you drop the game because you feel like you joined too late into the patch cycle and all the work now will be completely nullified within a month or two. It's a game completely broken from a design standpoint.

WoW wasn't particularly difficult or well written at launch. The biggest thing of note was that people didn't have guides telling them the best way to do things, so they experimented. 10-15man raids on the spire to account for the fact that half of the people were poorly outfitted and had no idea what they were doing. A bunch of weird kiting tactics and exploratory gameplay in general.
The expansions streamlined things, but not really in the way people imply. Instead of a world with various incongruent (and often poorly designed) quest threads to jump between, you had an increasingly curated path through the zones and an increasingly well connected playerbase.
Wowhead and similar sites went from being utilized by the most committed people to default tools.

They're trying to cater to multiple different demographics and the complaints are indicative of the perspective of the given demographic.
Casuals don't like how long it takes to get the cool gear. They lack the time/interest to drop 4 hour blocks to raid.
Idiots keep standing in the fire, so even if time isn't a constraint they have trouble with the raids.
Raiders meanwhile see Blizz's half-hearted attempts at catering to the aforementioned as a distraction from their core purpose.

You're not the only one. MMOs have been ruined by the very vocal "hardcore" players, when in reality the main target audience is 20 year old stoners/dad gamers.

        Anonymous

The issue with developing a MMO is that there is no main target audience. The goal should be to create an ecosystem in which different types of players can all thrive. The hardcore players want to deep dive into raids or competitive PVP, and to facilitate this they need more casual players to also be on their server. They need a population of people who will act as material farmers and crafters to keep the server economy running smoothly. The casuals likewise benefit from aping the character builds established by the hardcore players. There needs to be a multitude of different dispositions all communicating in /general to keep things interesting.

I've advocated for some kind of secretive cloud-gaming MMO ever since those Onlive ads were being spammed everywhere for this precise reason. Not only would datamining be impossible, but people wouldn't even have to know if or when an update/balance patch had been released. Maybe I just haven't thought about the logistics of it enough but it seems like a good way of bringing back the mystique factor present in older MMOs, as well as giving the technology an actual gameplay purpose.

Bad part of cloud-anything is once it gets hacked, pretty much every bit of it is now everywhere. Source code, account information, anything logged. It's not secure enough.

It has it's incentives. Notably that MMOs thrive on population, and this would ensure literally anyone with a computer and a somewhat up-to-date internet connection would be able to play to an equal standard. It could be the most enormous hardware-crippling game in existence and still attract a huge amount of players from all walks of life.

That was because the effort (testing, boss design, QA) wasn't put into making challenging bosses, but put into making the world feel alive and giving reasons for people to interact in the world.
This started in WOTLK with the whole dungeon and raid finders thing where it wasn't anymore about travelling to get to your destination and the potential interactions between, but just teleport, kill dungeon asap and get loot.

      > rotations for classes became more complex
This isn't a bad thing, but one thing that was inevitably lost with the game over time is the sense of wonder and exploration. I notice I log in now just to queue up for some M+, whereas before I would log in to explore a world, maybe RP as a ganker or something and really immerse myself.

developers being moronic and no longer listening to their playerbase
playerbase being moronic and not knowing what they want
game was built around a mentality of players that has changed too much since 2005
got so popular and lived so long that it started to buckle under its own weight
the climate of the internet in general is so heated that the playerbase regularly canibalizes itself, though this just happens in every MMO now

Every content update revolved around a raid and maybe a few dungeons if you were lucky. Every content update took longer and longer to put out. The game is ran by people who only raid and don't know what they're doing outside of that.

They focused on convenience and completely removed the WORLD from (W)oW. By the end of Wrath it was a glorified chat room with instanced minigames.
World PVP needed focus rather than removal
Dungeon finder and cross-server teleport Battlegrounds were entirely against the entire point of the game and throw into question the wisdom of allowing any instanced content in the first place
Flying mounts were pure suicide and anyone approving the idea must have been insane
Starting with an entire world but at a tiny scale was an awful idea and they should have had only a few zones at launch but at the same size of what we got, given a bigger scale and then gradually filled out a vast world. This may seem like a small issue of a minor element, being scale; however, the mission to slowly build a vast world would have given the team purpose that would have distracted them from the vacant dopamine treadmill the game became. Hindsight is 20/20 though and we can't find much fault in them for not thinking years ahead like this when even launching the game was an ambitious and far off point at the start of development

A huge amount of mistakes surrounding cata and attempting to recover from it. I actually really liked cata but they just couldn’t get over the fumble and it got worse and worse. One should note that the initial huge population was because the game was practically an early social media, and the population was already stagnating in wrath with the rise of the normienet.
    >casual players panned the loss of old content and found no new continent to be lazy
    >ridiculous stat creep even while they only gave 5 new levels to apparently avoid ridiculous stat creep
    >extremely hard pve locked casuals out of the most basic dungeons
    >old story characters replaced by new ones
It all hit like a bucket of ice water. They scrapped the xpac, nerfed it into the ground, capped it off with the easiest raid the game would ever see. Then they tried to pander to the chinese market with china which was pretty dumb and the remaining player base found it silly and the population got decimated again. They tried to go back to appealing to western audiences and their fanbase with draenor but by then they were stuck with the shitty evil garrosh storyline that nobody liked. Legion was a good attempt to get back on track but by then half the games lifetime and legacy was tainted by failure and it was too late. There are many lines in the game hinting at the writers cognizance and remorse about it all going wrong and how if they just stuck to their guns instead of panicking for years it could have been better. Anyway now we are in clown world and you know all about that.

Dungeon finder. It destroyed any sense of community or consequences for bad behavior which turned the game into a toxic shithole pretty much overnight.

No point being polite and respectful to the people you're running a dungeon with when you don't have to care about being invited back or getting a bad rep on your server.
Dungeon runs went from fun experiences where you could meet and chat with people to speedruns with zero communication (except for flaming if someone didn't do it the "proper" way).

        Anonymous

All that really happened was a small scale expansion that finally allowed people to change class based on alignment and choose any class when creating the character while they restructured the talents tree into something less bloated and with somewhat more meaningful choices like Sorcerer/Seer now having more AOE or Single Target options regardless of spec for example. It was pretty buggy cause the game is over a decade old and runs on the Hero Engine, but nothing majorly bad happened with it and I didn't see anyone posting anything about troons and globohomosexual in the expansion, so either they just keep doing what they're doing, or there are too few people to give a shit anymore.
Everything else in the expansion was just restructuring some older shit into something more streamlined. Dunno if they went back on Flashpoints being on rotation though.

The design for the end game after classic was basically designed for a Lobby based game without being a lobby based game. They could simply do away with the overworld and let you create a lobby for raids/pvp and the game would be mostly the same. In fact it might even be better than the current modern version because they would stop wasting time on a part of the game that clearly don't care about.

Vanilla was a project made by nerds for nerds. Gaming as a whole was different back then, But with each new expansion they made more and more "Optimal" design decisions. WoW literally lost its soul. It's the most fun and engaging on paper, but it feels like it was designed by algorythm. Oh, and the story is a barely coherrent shit that made me completely lose interest in the universe. I thought it was shit by Cata, and now it's not even story anymore, just badly written fanfiction.

I'm no FFIX cultist, but i can't explain why i find it much more fun other than aforemntioned "Soul" argument. It has shitty graphics, world is drab and disconnected, quests are simple and boring, classes feel samey, there are almost no fun mechincs like shapeshifting or totems, every dps is basically the same. The only objectively better thing is the story. But, for some reason, i prefer it. It feels creative, while WoW feels like a product, albeit a better one on paper.

All the making-of material of the original wow makes it clear that the passion and drive of the devs stemmed from "We want to make our dream mmorpg". Not only are all of those people long gone from the decision making process, the pervasive attitude among the developers today is to simply makes "systems" that maximises player retention, the desire to create an adventure you can share with massive amounts of people is not even part of the equation. Having a bottom line or a creative vision isn't just corporate team building bullshit. It's really hard to care about wow when it's so obvious nobody that works on it today cares.
