I did try playing the OG FF7 years back (around the release of FF13, i think) and it was just way too dated to enjoy at the time. I couldn't imagine going back to that game after Remake and Rebirth.

I didn't want the remake to be a surprise sequel set in an alternate timeline. I'm not a purist, I was expecting some changes to the story since that's usually the case in remakes anyway. The thing is, just because I expected changes doesn't mean I like the actual changes they decided to go with.
I did enjoy Remake's battle system, soundtrack, and characters a lot, but the reveal at the end really soured the whole thing.

Regarding the article: it might be because the first game in the Final Fantasy 7 remake series is called "Final Fantasy 7 Remake", not "Remake Part 1" or anything like that. For how important and valuable brands like Final Fantasy supposedly are, and how much Sony probably paid for the exclusivity, the people involved with them seem to have surprisingly little oversight meant to specifically protect the brand, the IP, and ensure it is actually going to make money.
All the production staff had to do was give the fans a faithful remake, that would have the same simple iconic story that also made it a lot of people's first entry to the franchise in the first place.
Instead they made a confusing, muddled mess, that didn't appeal to anyone, and certainly didn't bring back old fans, or get them many new fans.

As people have said, the digital version of Rebirth came with Remake, and you get free materia for having a PS5 Remake save file, so most people went with that route. I don’t know if it’ll really go into if she’s alive or not but she will for sure keep a role in this trilogy. Granted it’s a theory but I strongly believe that the Aerith that joins in the final fight is the AC one just like Seph is who comments that he underestimated her.

Only way Part 3 would be redeemed in my eyes is if they retroactively patch out the time janny/mobile/compilation bullshit, fire Nojima and Toriyama, and just make it 1:1 FF7.

I quite liked the gameplay, and I've heard Rebirth is as good or better, so I'll play it eventually just for that, but I'll wait for it to be half off or more on PC because the awful writing and story changes rub me the wrong way.

I don't really like action combat. I'm not going to claim it's not a Final Fantasy game because it's not turn based, but I also don't have any interest in picking it up because of it.
I don't like a lot of the story changes and that it's not a faithful remake, nor are the changes made to the story even interesting to me. I also don't like that it was made for modern audiences and misses a lot of the rough edge and grit of 90s gaming, but that was not a surprise to me and I can't hold that against this specific game. At least with FFXVI, I didn't have any expectations regarding the story, but FFVII not living up to its history really miffs me.
I would be more likely to pick up Stranger of Paradise than FFVII's remake because of that last point, at least SoP almost completely divorces itself from the formula to be its own thing and doesn't pretend to be something it's not. Hell, I would've picked up a remake of Final Fantasy Mystic Quest in this style over FFVII.
