normalgay cattle don't really notice, so it's better to set it lower for performance

Sure you have more stuff on screen with a higher fov, but you could also use lower quality LoDs since everything appears smaller.
The buildings in op's pic wouldn't need to be as detailed with the higher fov.

      FPBP
its also another measure to mitigate how awful it is to play an FPS with a stick because a wider FOV makes the lack of your ability to snap aim that much more noticeable

      Anonymous

Wrong, you can scale down LOD because the FOV is higher, you can’t see distant detail as well. The reason why is because most FPS games were designs and playtested with consoles in mind where you’re looking at a TV from your couch, which takes less of your peripheral vision than using a monitor at a desk.

For the morons: The 2d screen mimics only what is seen with both eyes, obviously. You are only looking straight forward at your monitor with both eyes. The inner cone showing what's seen with both eyes in the graph is what matters when translating to 2d. Console FOV players BTFO

      PC vs Console players

CRTs have better latency, better response time, and need a lower FOV.
LCDs are blurry and need a higher FOV.

console devs cope by saying they assume people are playing on a TV 6-12 feet away so it looks more "natural"

  6. 8 months ago

Why would you play at 120 FOV?

Because it feels like you're running at super speed even though you're not.

  7. 8 months ago
    Anonymous

    60 fov is correct

the reason why its not 120 or 180 is because you don't have screens on the sides of your eyeballs.

    window effect
you get more field of view the closer to the window you are
you get less field of view from the window when you're further away

developers assume you're looking at a tv that takes up a small amount of your vision space, not a desktop display at arm's length
it's stupid, but remember, you're not the target audience, the masses are
